The Filth Was Ungodly

I was give a box of 525 Remington 22LR Golden Bullets, I went to the range this morning and shot 150 rounds. The rifle barrel, magazines, stock, my face and my left hand, were absolutely covered in soot. I have never seen ammo this dirty, it took me an additional 15 minutes to clean the rifle.

Normally I give the questionable ammo to the grandkids to shoot at whatever, no way I can give them this. It shot okay (I guess), cycled the Winchester Wildcat, every time, no FTF or FTE, but the absolute filth just shocked me.

I'm wondering if brass diameter of the Remington
is allowing blowback into the receiver? If the fit was tight,
you'd get minimal gsr showing up in the action.
I doubt it's just the powder, there is a reason it's not just blowing out the muzzle.
My Semiauto requires more cleaning than my bolt actions.
Chamber is larger, more blow by.

Yes this

I too was given a batch of Remington golden bullets albeit from the old days they where still in the yellow 100 round plastic containers.

I can only describe the same experience they where utterly filthy. Even worse I had some that where out of spec causing an out of battery explosion my 10/22 at the time. It was not a happy bunny! it did something to that 10/22, that meant it never shot reliably again.

Sadly I had to junk it.

with that "Cramo" I simply got a monkey wrench and pulled all the heads and poured the powder into my window boxes. Plants love nitro

I agree that the amount of blowback debris suggests the brass is not obturating enough to seal the chamber. If other ammo does not do this, it might be worth measuring the diameter of the GB as well as other ammo. It is also possible the GB brass does expand as easily as other ammo. The Wildcat chamber could also be a bit larger in diameter to improve feed reliability.

The main question to get answered is did you try other brands and if so were they just as dirty?
If yes, it's either because of the semi chamber you are not used to and spoiled on bolt action or your chamber is too big allowing blowback in your action/face.

If not then that ammo is really dirty!

Let us know as I have a wildcat that I wanted to shoot so interested in the chamber question :D

I’ve run Federal bulk, CCI mini mags and Aguila Super Extra with no excessive dirt issues, through the Winchester Wildcat. I ran 100 rounds of the Remington GBs through my Ruger American Rimfire and my Henry AR7 (multiple FTEs), again really really dirty. There is a very noticeable difference in the sound of each shot, bang, pop, Bang, pop, pop, bang, etc, etc. Just really crappy ammo.

The 14 yr grandson is thrilled, he has some ammo to run through his Stevens bolt action…

Federal AutoMatch is my favorite bulk .22 LR, ammo but due to the scarcity of ammunition, I buy what brands I can, when I can, with few exceptions. I recently purchased a box of 500 Remington Thunderbolts, arguably the scourge of many .22 shooters and was pleasantly surprised. Every one of them went off, ejected and overall shot pretty well and what one would expect from most bulk ammo. My only complaint is that they were dirty but not to the extent that I wouldn't buy more if I have the chance.

Ok, reading between the lines and let me know if my guess is correct(as I know you guys will).

The OP said "I’ve run Federal bulk, CCI mini mags and Aguila Super Extra with no excessive dirt issues, through the Winchester Wildcat."

AL you said this "Sounds like the OP has a large chamber in his semi." after he clarified the other ammo conditions, did I miss something here. How did you come to that?

So I will assume it must be the dirty ammo then because the other brands didn't get the Winchester Wildcat dirty unless AL shows different, just trying to get my mind clear before trying my Wildcat. I have some Blazers I was going to use. Thinking of what to expect from a "Made in Istanbul Silan, Turkey" rifle. I had a good feeling buying a Winchester, just didn't know they now import from Turkey.

Well crap! After looking at the title I thought I was going to be directed to a porn site! Seems a bit dramatic for some burned or unburned powder! Even though I was at a luncheon recently where the Vichyssoise had at least a half of a leek too much added and it was also ungodly! I summoned the royal chef and had a word with him right there on the spot.

only yellow jackets

The only Rem. rimfire I will run through any of my 22's is yellow jackets, All the rest is WAY too dirty, And not as accurate as my go to CCI ammo. I use the yellow jackets in some of my S.A and D.A. revolvers only, The high velocity works well for me in a few revolvers, Along with Stingers, I never run it in rifles, The SV and HV CCI preforms very accurate for me.

Cheap 22 ammo

When I was a kid, we'd go up to Playworld and get some gawdawful 22 shorts from Czechoslovakia (pre Czech Republic). At one point when I still had a box I believe it said .73 on it for a box of 50! It had "Keep out of reach of chilodren" (sic) on the box. My kid brother and I liked it because we could fit more in the tubular magazine on Dad's Savage pump. It was filthy but cheap and we could spend a whole afternoon for about a buck and a half shooting rats at the old city dump. I miss those days.

One thing that hasn't been considered yet is that if the ammo powder is not burning cleanly or is sooty, then it is very possible that depending on wind conditions, you may be getting soot being blown make on you from the muzzle end of the barrel. You are probably getting some a fair amount of soot that is coming out of the chamber when the bolt cycles open (worse when the wind is in your face).

A sooty powder would also explain the extra amount of cleaning required for the barrel.

My biggest complaint with Rem ammo is the amount of lead it deposits in the barrel. YMMV

My ex and I stayed in a hotel in Portland once where it was so nasty we were afraid to sleep in the sheets:mad: Couldn't get out of that hotel fast enough. Now as far as ammo is concerned, I have never seen ammo that I avoided shooting because it was too dirty. There is ammo I prefer to shoot however.

I run a lot of Armscor Precision made in the Philippines through a couple of Marlins in the gopher fields. Its cheap and shoots real straight...but... Its dirty and must have some sort of alloy that comes off as splinters on the patch, sometimes even lumps of accumulation, like a wad of dried chewing gum stuck to the inside of the barrel.

I'm a Patchworm kind of guy and hate to break the rod and brushes...but a guys got to do what he's got to do:)

Woe is me :(

I bought one of those 525 bricks of RGB and it was absolutely the worst garbage I have ever seen. I had to shoot it in a revolver and a single shot. It would not even feed in a bolt gun. I recently bought 2 100 round plastic boxes of RGB and it is still crap but it did mostly cycle in a semi. 9 pellet #4 buck in my 410 patterns better.
