I recently saw a Taurus 172 in 17 HMR and don't know anything about them. How well do they function and are they reliable? What is the quality (in your opinion)? How well do they shoot? And last, about how much do they cost in either stainless or blue?

It looks like a nice little gun, but I am concerned about the accuracy of a 17 HMR in a pump gun. In spite of my concern, I might have to see if I can find one if the price is right. Any and all input is appreciated!

Taurus 172 Response

I have had three of them. One is the 23 inch blued model. I have the new Burris 3X9 scout scope mounted on it. The second is a sixteen inch blued model. The third one is another 16 inch blued model which I recently gave as a gift to a cousin. I have have found the fit and finish to be good. One has the very dark bluing which the older Rossi's had. They all function flawlessly. I have found them to be as accurate as my Winchester 9417 or my Henry Frontier 17 hmr. Like all 17 hmr guns you have to clean them often for accuracy. I would like to get one in stainless steel eventually, but there a few other rifles I will get first. Personally, I currently would not pay more than $500 for any model in 100% mint condition. I'll try to get some help to post some pictures for you. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input 1knifeboy!

My son ended up purchasing the 172, a stainless steel model. He got it for $230 and I think he got a pretty good deal. It is hard to find any kind of pump rimfire for under $250. I hope to try it out this week. I will let you know how it performs.

Sub sailor, when I do a Taurus 172 search on Gunbroker for completed auctions and sort by number of bids, the top 2 items sold for $785 and $665. Also several in the $500 range. So yea, I'd say he got a good deal! Personally, I wouldn't pay that much, but they are a fairly rare item. I own 2 of the model 72's, in 22 mag, and they're a pretty good replica of the Winchester 62. I've not done any serious shooting with either one, yet. I posted a little more info and a pic on this thread:
