T1X trigger spring

I'm still trying to get a good trigger for my T1X without buying a Jard that may or may not fit the trigger guard. I can't get an answer from Jard about that problem. I am going to try CZnut's modification to adjust the sear engagement.

Does anyone know of a McMaster Carr spring that will fit the Tikka trigger and get me down to about a 3oz. to 6oz. trigger pull using CZnuts mod? If you do, could you give me the part number and the weight of pull it gives you. I have a "Ernie the gunsmith" spring in there now but it won't go below 1lb. and 5oz.
without CZ's mod.

I may be a little premature with my question since I'm waiting to do CZ's modification, but while I have everything apart, I thought I would like to have several spring options on hand so I can do the work in one session. As always, your suggestions, opinions, and solutions are very welcome.

I have McMaster Carr springs that work great in the T1x but, as the other guys mentioned, a spring swap isn't going to get you that low reliably.

What are you planning on using the rifle for that you need to have the trigger that low. I have a Jard in mine now set to 8 or 9 oz. Before I put that in I shot ARA factory class successfully with a spring that only brought it to about 24 oz safely. I shot free recoil off a bipod and pinched the trigger with my thumb on the back of the trigger guard. The trigger was nice and crisp and it worked well. Sure a lighter trigger would be nice but it's not absolutely necessary if you have the right technique

I currently have a Jewell in a BMR. Honestly it's too light to use the rifle for anything other than shooting off the bench. I decided after the last range session with it that I'll probably put the factory trigger back in it. These guns weren't meant to benchrest rifles

Remove the trigger return spring and see what your trigger pull is without it. You'll have to manually push the trigger forward to make sure the sear engages. Mine is 1.0 pounds. This is just a test. DO NOT leave the trigger return spring out of the gun.
That means no spring on earth will make it lighter than that. I figure that my rifle needs at least 4 ounces of trigger return spring force so the lightest pull I can possibly get on my T1x is 20 ounces. I set it at 2.0 pounds.
The trigger geometry on my T1x is different from other rifles. There is plenty of sear engagement but I can't feel any creep. When it goes, it goes all at once. I took the whole thing apart and the trigger sear engagement surfaces are very smooth. I think it is just a geometry thing.

PW - The rifle is used for bench shooting ONLY, and I stress BENCH ONLY! I'm curious, which Jard trigger are you using at 8 or 9 ounces? The original Jard T1X trigger or the competition trigger. I guess 8 or 9 ounces would be OK. I had a Jewell in a 40XBR 6PPC at 3oz. and just got used to that weight. I don't shoot CF benchrest anymore and I'm concentrating on RF.

And it does quite well for factory class. The reason I said what I did previously is, I own a few rifles that are capable for ARA Factory class but I also like to be able to use them for other types of shooting (offhand etc). I can manage a light trigger for even offhand shooting but I'm not sure others, who I might share the rifle with, can. That said, 3 oz might be more manageable than what I currently have my dedicated bench guns set to. I may try the 3 oz Jard in my T1x at some point

PW - I take it that the Jard you have in one rifle is the original Jard for the T1X? You said "I may try the 3oz. Jard in my T1X at some point" indicates you may try the Jard "competition" trigger at 3oz. Am I correct on that? Let us know how the competition trigger works out. Since others have had the comp trigger be a bad fit in the trigger guard, I don't want to rush out and buy one if they don't fit properly.

Correct, I have the regular Jard trigger for the T1x. Not the new match trigger

If you do a little digging around in this section I've posted about the trigger before

I got my T1x out last night and tested the trigger again. The pull is 7 oz average over 10 pulls. Hower at that weight there's quite a bit of variation and the trigger feels mushy. Yeah it's lighter than the factory trigger but not nearly as crisp. I should've returned the trigger to Jard but I thought it was an improvement for what I was doing with the rifle at the time. I think I'm going to put the factory trigger back in it now.

Well, I am glad to hear you got your comp trigger and you like the way it works. Weightwise, Paul's sounds good as well, but for the mushy feel. Paul, do you think that could be a form of "creep" in the trigger. The reason I ask is because CZnut has a modification to eliminate some of the creep or take-up. You've probably seen his posting showing the adjustment mod that he's discovered. I'm sure glad to hear that superdave001 has the comp. trigger and no problems with it. Dave, is your trigger clean and crisp feeling or is like Paul's with some mush to it?

Love to hear from both of you.

I fiddled with all the adjustments and ended up a a place that I like. A tiny bit of slack and then a
sudden release. It doesn't really feel mushy and it is a crisp release. I will probably adjust that out
once I get more comfortable with the trigger. This is the lowest pull weight yet for me and it will take some
getting used to it. My CZ is set at just under 11 oz (factory trigger with spring change) and works very
well for me. I may change springs in the Tikka and get it to about 10-11 oz just to be consistent.

@Houligan if you're referring to me, Paul was my dad's name. Never been mine 😉

It is creepy but not really how I've always thought of trigger creep. I've had creepy triggers before (and I very much dislike them). This is different. It's very smooth and actually feels pretty good. Just, like I said, kind of mushy. I've tried less sear engagement and it fails to cock if I work the bolt fast. No gut for me not even for benchrest

One thing I don’t see mentioned here is the firing pin and hammer spring and sear contact point on the hammer. All of these have a big impact on trigger weight. Making sure your sear contact on the hammer is perfectly flat and highly polished. Having a spare hammer/firing pin spring to modify a little at a time is a good idea. Just don’t fool with the firing pin return spring if you don’t have to. If you’re not getting your trigger pull down to where you want it this is a good way to get it lower. Just don’t shorten the firing pin/hammer spring too much or you’ll get light primer strikes. Just a little goes a long way. Just have spare springs to work with and leave the original ones unmodified so you have a recourse if it doesn’t work out.
