StG-44 .22 LR: Any Thoughts?

I've seen the reviews and some of these StG-44s on GunBroker. I like the looks of all the assault-rifle .22LR rifles being made now, but all the plastic and aluminum really turns me off. The StG-44 is reportedly all heavy-gauge stamped steel, just like the originals, so I'm kinda jonesing for one. Any real-life experience with one in RFC Land?

I had a chance to get mine out to the range for a test run yesterday. I've heard people complain that they can't get all 25 rounds to fit. That wasn't the case with mine. However I did notice that it does shoot way low. I had to move the rear sight all the way forward just to hit the bullseye at 22yds. I guess I could file down the front sight to correct the problem. I could shoot it quickly with no problems, but when I tried to shoot faster it started to have some extraction/ejection issues. Hoefully it will just need to be broken in a little more.

If you're having problems with extraction make sure you have an extractor. I was able to shoot mine but was having problems when I noticed it didn't have an extractor. I contacted ATI and they sent me an extractor but didn't include a pin or spring. I contacted them again and they are sending me the pin and spring.

I made a pin from a drill bit and had a spring that worked. If functions great now. Before I had problems with extraction and double feeds when a case didn't extract and eject.

I also noticed that it was shooting way low at 25 yards. I ended up filing the front sight down until it was shooting to point of aim at 25 and the sight set at the lowest setting.

I was having some problems with rounds hanging up in the magazine. Occasionally a round would stick and not be pushed up. I've heard that others have had this problem. I ordered an additional magazine directly from ATI but the order has been processing for almost 10 days. No one else has magazines in stock and they are a bit pricey.

I like mine a lot.

I think the receiver is that Zamak stuff. I know a guy who has a real StG 44, this feels exactly the same. Naturally the .22 version differs in dis-assembly, but it feels like the real thing. I have had some issues with my magazine follower not feeding the rounds consistently into the chamber. I have to call ATI on Monday about that.

I've had the Colt / Umarex M4, I have a Sig 522 that I will never sell, this rifle is in that class. I really like it and won't ever get rid of it.

Hope that helps

I have one coming in next week, hopefully Monday. I ordered 4 25 Round Mags from two different Vendors, and they arrived Thursday. They look pretty solid!

I loaded 24 Rounds of 22LR Snap Caps, and they do load pretty easy, without cutting my fingers with the Feed Lips, like some other Mags do.

I did notice, that they tend to get caught at the back of the Mag, where the back of the Track curves at the top. When Loading the Next Round, and pulling down slightly on the Load Assist Button, sometimes the back of the Round would catch, when I let the Load Assist Button go.

Hopefully, they'll feed like they should. I've noted some of the comments on Rounds getting hung up in the Mag, so I'll keep an eye on that at the Range.

As for availability of Mags, currently, Davidson's shows 13 of the 25 Rounders Available, Part Number GERM4440103. Their price is $39.99. I paid $36.99 for each of the two I bought at Palmetto State Armory online. They're Out-Of-Stock at the moment.

Cheers!

Some comments on mine:

-It's a fun gun to shoot! A real attention getter at the range too.
-Will fire most all ammo just fine. The only brand I ever had any trouble with was Winchester and I'm fairly certain it was a couple of faulty rounds rather than the firearm. Mine will even cycle on CCI Quiet, but HV is recommended.
-I had not heard of the extractor problems before. Mine must be good as the spent casings want to fly into the next county, especially when firing more powerful rounds like CCI Stingers and Velocitors.
-Cleaning presents a slight challenge as to clean the bore, one has to start back where the stock attaches and feed from there. The feed ramp by its shape offers a bit of a challenge due to its shape and access. Not too hard mind you, just take your time.
-On mine the fake flash hider is a screw on part. Should be trivial to get an adapter for a suppressor if you live somewhere that allows them. (I live in Illinois, so no go for me.) :(
-Stermgewehre on Youtube did a good review:
He had a bit of a problem getting the bolt to release after a last round hold open. I have found that if you pull and release the charging handle with some authority and have a loaded magazine inserted, the problem is non-existent.
-Regarding magazines, if you get one that is "sticky" in that the follower doesn't move smoothly, take it apart and clean and lube it. Of the 5 mags I have, 2 had the trouble and cleaning them fixed it. Another symptom is that they won't accept the full 25 rounds. Also fixed by a clean/lube.

Like some others, this is one that I will never sell. It's as close to the real thing as I'll ever get.

I wonder if they have changed the design. On mine the "barrel nut" is part of the barrel shroud/front sight and is cast as one piece. The shroud is held in place by a small screw in the receiver. After the first time I shot it the shroud and front sight were a little loose and I had to tighten the screw.

As far as the extractor problem, mine was shipped missing the extractor. During the initial firing I had problems when a round didn't fire and I had to pull the round out of the chamber. I didn't notice that it was missing until the second time out and when I was removing an unfired round I noticed it wasn't there.

Overall I'm happy with the rifle and it's the closest I'll ever come to owning an real STG44.

Correction: I just took a closer look and the barrel nut is threaded and not part of the barrel shroud.
