I don't hunt, but I have a thing for what I call squirrel rifles. I don't know why. I just like them. Does that mean I'm weird?

Here are a few that I had out of the safe the other day.

Left to right:
CZ 457 Royal (currently 22WMR)
Steyr Zephyr II
CZ 452 American 17HM2
CZ 452 American 22lr
Anschutz 1710D
Kimber K22 Hunter

My only semi-auto "squirrel rifles" are a Thompson Center Classic and Weatherby XXII. Well I should count my grandpa's Glenfield 60 also. There's a Marlin 39AS and Browning BL22 grade II around here somewhere as well. The only Winchester is another grandpa rifles; it's a 67. .

For what it's worth, the two grandpa rifles are worth more to me than any of the rest.

Looks a lot like my line up...
That's a high compliment! Thank you!

Which one is your most accurate?
Oh boy.. They'll all shoot 0.5" or better at 50 yards if the trigger nut does his part. The Steyr and two CZ Americans have produced several 0.2" and 0.3" groups, but I'm not good enough to get them consistently. I haven't shot the 1710D much yet, but I've shot it enough to know it's probably going to be one of my most accurate rifles. I haven't shot the Royal Magnum yet. The K22 is probably the least accurate of the five I have shot in that picture; but it will still do MOA without much fuss.

Which one would I reach for if I had to make one shot for all the marbles? The 452 American 22lr.

While I've admittedly used lever, bolt & pump guns on Squills, the rifles I used the most were semi-auto self-loaders.

When hunting in a heavily-populated Squill grove, the autoloaders gave me shots at more/multiple Squills because they didn't know where I was - my hunting position not given away like it always was when manipulating the actions of those non-autoloading rifles.

The non-autoloaders always made a detectible mechanical noise and/or movement of my hands - which caused all the Squills I shot after the first one to run away/hide for a looong time.

The only thing that I moved when using an autoloader was my trigger finger - the noise of the action cycling was covered by the noise of the shot.

My use of an autoloader usually allowed me to gather my daily bag limit of Squills (10) from a single hunting location.

When I did that, I usually had friends & family over for a delicious Brunswick stew for supper that night. (sharing the wealth, so to speak)

Dear BH , I have taken a 22 magnum
Squirrel hunting don't , solids are o.k., still too much gun. I do remember saying you didn't hunt , I don't now. I like your hole cutters. I use mine for coyotes and bobcats , with thermals. This a nice set of cz's. Your friend Buck

For several years I used my first CZ 452 FS for squirrels, accumlated a few dings and nicks but lord was it sweet, later I went with more synthetic stocks and threaded barrels, if moving around is required my CZ 452 .17m2 shortened to 16.5 inches, threaded and action and barrel cerakoted a green black in a Silhouette stock is likely to get the call. Ain't pretty to most but sure is practical.

and if sitting in a fixed location is the order of the day my 1712 in a McMillian stock (not the lite weight one unfortunately) is apt to get the call as it is definitely the day in, day out best shooter not that any are less than quite accurate.

My old CZ 452 FS...

That little scope was all I needed back then...now...

That is a great collection indeed. Thank you for sharing your "weirdness". I am a squirrel hunter and have owned many different rifles for that pursuit. My favorite is my Remnigton 541S. If you can find a good one, add it to your collection.

A Kimber 82 Classic will be coming to the collection soon. I'm not going to worry about setting this one up to suit the Kimber aficionados. I'm going to set it up my way with Talley rings and either a Leupold 4-12x AO or a Weaver Classic.
