Picked up a Spikes ST22 on an Spikes Infidel Lower. Been trying to get the guy to sell it to me for a couple of years. Condition is like new. Actually could almost pass for unfired. Came with 5 Blackdog mags. The guy I got it from inherited it from a friend. Claims friend told him he bought it as a complete rifle from Spikes. My question is how accurate are these. And I could not find much info on actual sales. I gave $700 for the rifle and mags. Hope I did not get #@!$ on price. I wanted it as a practice rifle of the same weight as my center fire ARs.

Spike's sold some uppers/rifles with Lothar Walther barrels which were pretty accurate. The nickle plated bolt could use some of the same parts as Ciener conversion bolts but the firing pin and retaining roll pin was in a different location. The firing pins were just a little different but could probably use a modified Ciener or CMMG firing pin. I'm not sure if Spike's still have spare parts for these as they discontinued them around 8- 10 years ago.

These dedicated uppers are great plinking rifles plus work great for running CQB drills and shooting steel targets. The Spikes use the same version of Black Dog Machine mag as the CMMG, TACCOM or Tactical Solutions dedicated uppers.

Be forewarned AR-15's in 22 long rifle are addictive, I have four.

I have a pair of Spikes ST22’s that I purchased used last year. Didn’t know much about them when I bought them – I have an S&W AR22 that I’ve had for a while and wasn’t impressed with its accuracy so was looking for something better. The Spikes I bought were evidently purchased as complete rifles, the lowers are stamped “Cal.22LR, Mod ST22.

I initially had some functioning issues - mainly rounds not firing, kept trying different ammo and had best results with American Eagle and some types of Federal ammo. Winchester & Remington didn’t work so well. Accuracy wise to date the best I have achieved is ¾” 10 shot groups @ 50 yards using SK std+. I have only scoped one of the rifles – the other I set up as an iron sight rifle and can regularly ring my 4” X 6” steel swinger @ 90 yards with it.

Triggers: I wasn’t thrilled with the stock triggers so I tried a few different combos. My modular 3.5 lb. trigger when installed wouldn’t consistently fire some of the ammo. One of the rifles ended up with a CMMG 2 stage trigger with a JP reduced power hammer spring, the other one I tried the JP reduced power spring kit and had firing issues – did some reading and ended modifying the hammer by cutting off the hook portion on the back of the hammer. After doing that it has functioned much better with the JP springs in it. Had a few issues with lower velocity ammo in them and my TacSol upper also, rounds would fire, eject & load the next round but the bolt wouldn’t travel far enough to the rear to cock the hammer. Using higher velocity ammo seemed to take care of this problem. Part of this problem could have to do with the fact the rifles hadn’t been shot much at all. I plan on taking a couple of them to Montana to shoot gophers this year.

I talked to the guys at TACCOM and ordered a couple of their Enhanced firing pins to try in the Spikes. Haven’t had to install them yet as the rifles reliability has improved after working with them a bit. They said they might take a little modification to make them work in the Spikes & they wouldn’t work in my TacSol upper.
