I seem to be hearing about RWS Premium ammo more lately. My experience with RWS is very limited. I have shot R50 and it wasn't what I would use for IR 50/50 and its a more expensive ammo. I normally shoot Lapua center X, Midas, or Eley match. I'd like to hear from some people who shoot RWS and what kind of rifles are you shooting .

RWS .22LR match ammo isn't as widely available in North America as Lapua and Eley.

RWS Premium Line ammo is like top tier Lapua and Eley ammos in that their performance will vary by lot. Some lots will shoot better than others.

I have some RWS Special Match, which is a Premium Line variety. The top tier RWS standard rifle ammo (nominally rated at 330 m/s or about 1082 fps) is RWS R50.

For what it's worth, here are the results of the first two boxes I shot last week at 57 yards (my club range's version of 50). Five shot groups.

I shoot a TON of RWS. I shoot the Rifle Match (Yellow Box) and Target Rifle (Orange Box).
I love the stuff. Yellow Box is higher priced...but I like Orange Box a bit better.

I shoot it mainly out of my CZ 457 Jaguar but also out of my CZ 457 Varmint and Varmint MTR.

It is my "Go To" ammo for target work
It shot these iron sighted in my Jaguar..

And here is a sampling in the MTR:

Penage guy,,I see that special match priced approx $16.00 for 50. Is your target a tested lot for your rifle? I would think at that price range it would be equal to center x, is that your findings? Stephen, holding a .3 average with your rifles is really good.

Rosec, my lot of RWS SM is a random one. It was the only lot available at the dealer and I thought I would give a few bricks a try.

Before buying, my expectation was that this variety of RWS -- Special Match -- was comparable to Center X. It is not the top tier RWS standard rifle ammo just as CX is not the top tier Lapua standard rifle ammo. (By standard rifle ammo I mean that it's nominally the usual nominal MV average for that manufacturer.)

Of course, every kind of match ammo may vary in performance by lot. Some will shoot better in your rifle than others.

Thanks for the reply. I spend a lot of time lot testing. [and money] I see that ammo now and then but, Lapua and Eley are much more abundant. I was hoping for more replies from people that have tried that line of ammo. [RWS]

I just sold the Midas Plus I had and switched to RWS R50. It is as available as Lapua, depending on where you look for it. I bought a couple bricks, tested in 2 rifles and was very happy so I quickly got 2 cases of the same lot number.

Mr. Rosec,
R50 and R100 are the top tear RWS ammo. It is fast ammo R100 being the faster of the two. It's like any other top "match" ammo some lots perform better than others.
the last lot of R50 I tested the mean/average speed was 1113 with an ES of 26.

I have shoot thousands and thousands of RWS Target Rifle and Rifle Match. I have never lot tested them..just purchased bricks at a time. And have yet to come across a "bad" brick. It always seems to shoot very well for me out of my 457s. Now...I have never had a brick or box just shoot one hole groups...but also have never had a batch that shoots like buck shot

I have some Target Rifle, the orange box. It has worked well in all my rifles. Wish I had More of That Lot!
One rifle, German btw, it hits the 1/4" swinger at 50yd more that anything else I've tried.
At a recent 22 silhouette shoot out to 200yd properly scaled rams it did very well at every distance.

I bought a brick of R50 2 years ago to test in my F-SBR gun, but never got around to it. Last year I started shooting ARA Factory. and I shot mainly Center X. The last match of the year I decided to start shooting the brick of R50. It shot outstanding. How well it shoots depends on the lot of course, but now it is what I shoot for matches. I also have some RWS Rifle Match and Special Match. Those two didn't shoot very good.

I have shot some of the yellow box and it really didnt do well. I was thinking to try some special match. I've shot a few boxes of the R50 SC and 1 lot R50 and it really didn't do well. By the way, I shot built rifles with match chambers . [2500's and Turbo's]

With my 64 MPR I use exclusivly RWS R50, when I bought this rifle years ago. I always made ammo tests with different lots at their test range in FĂĽrth, Germany. At 50 m the combination gun/lot shows remarkable differences, between 21 mm enclosed down to 13 mm. From a 13-mm- or 14-mm-lot I buy normally 5,000 rounds. Two or three years later another ammo test is nessecary, since the 5k-package is gone.

The target has a diameter of 6.35 mm (1/4"). So there is no room for second class ammo or an improper lot. That's only a waste of time and ammo (= money).

I shoot ARA with the center dot being very small indeed. RWS is not used as much as Lapua and a far distant second is Eley Match and Tenex. I have a test lot of 10 boxes to RWS R50 to shoot in my unlimited benchrest rifles. My issue with RWS is the extreme cost compared to Lapua and Eley. From the small amount of testing I have done so far it might be as good but not a lot better for the huge extra cost.

bpost1958, Yes, the cost is a factor. I don't get ammo from RWS that shoots any better than Eley or Lapua. The x ring in IR 50/50 is also a quarter inch. The matches I usually shoot have top notch shooters. X's decide the match winner more than not.

I agree with you boone. The price per box of R50 drops when you buy a brick. It drops a lot more when you buy a case. Anschutz North America will work with shooters doing lot testing. My Suhl 150 and my Remington 40X both are extremely consistent with R50. Much more than with Midas Plus.

So does Ruag make all there 22 LR Sv ammo at 1083 FPS ? I noticed it seems the Norma tac and match both have that listed on there boxes to I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that cause I’m guessing you could zero your scope with tac and the rws 50 should shoot pretty close to the same zero

Jim,
I lot tested my R50 thru ANA.. They sent me 10 different lots that i tested and then got a very good price on the R50. Awsome to deal with! I will say that every lot i tested shot very good! the one lot just seemd a little better then the rest.. but to be honest i woulda been happy with any of them
