Hello and Happy New Year! I purchased a Ruger Mark IV 22/45 yesterday online on KYGCO at an amazing price. This going to be a “range toy” for cheap plinking/fun so not looking to break the bank with this purchase.

I ordered some upgrades, including a “Shadow” rail, charging handle and new grip. I am TRULY torn as to what optic I want to go with though? I am leaning towards a BSA 2x20 pistol scope but have not ruled out an green dot (I prefer green bc I have astigmatism) Looking for input and experiences from those who had or have a MK IV and what optic you are running on it. Thank you 🙏

How do you plan to shoot it (fast at steel...slow at targets) and what distance, these will help to determine recommendations. If shorter distances and faster shooting like steel challenge then the green dot would serve you better. It slow target shooting at longer distances then the scope may serve you better. I do not run scopes on any handguns, it is red dots for me...but I need to check out a green dot, hear good things about them.

If you can tolerate a picatinny style rail, its easy to enjoy everything possible on one pistol. After sight in, removal and replacement is very close to return to zero. Just watched a great video by Brian Zinns on YouTube yesterday. He turns the red dot down to a low setting and concentrates on the target, not the dot. When he discovered this technique, his scores greatly improved. In this style of shooting the lack of a perfect circle dot will be way less important.

Holosun looks like a great product, but I have yet to try one based on their written warranty. Unless it has changed since the last time I looked at it, proceed with caution. If they ever change it to compare with the majority of the other makers, I will be onboard immediately.

I found a like new 22/45 Lite in a Pawn shop, to use in Steel Plate matches. Found an inexpensive Truglo ay Academy for less than 50. Having never used a Red Dot before, I didn't want to spend a lot of money until I felt they would help me. To my surprise, it had both Red and Green 5MOA Dots with four different levels of Brightness. I've had no issues with this sight, and would buy another if this one ever fails. Only changed the battery once in two years.
