I bought a ruger 10/22 target/tactical rifle with 16 1/4" hammer forged barrel. What a mistake.I put on my nikon 4 1/2 X 14 buckmaster scope and tried to sight it in for 50yards. It shot terrible. my groups ran around 3-4 inches which is terrible. I can shoot my savage max 1 in 243 cal. into half inch groups at 100 yards all day long but this 22 rimfire would only get 3-4 inch groups. The trigger pull was terrible also. I wish i could get my money back. What a waste of money. I think i will try a better match trigger. I ought to send it back to ruger.

Welcome to 10/tweekie 2's...some shoot fair outta the box..some/most don't, triggers always suck...you will need to spend some time and money on it but it will shoot much better as you do upgrade$.
A Power Custom Hammer and Adj. Sear kit will get you at or under 3 lbs...and very little pre-travel.
Better ammo is a must with these guns...Wolf MT or SK Std. Plus will shoot way better for ya...at minimum use Federal's and the Lightnings from WallyWorld are decent shooters.
The CCI Std. Velocity will shoot well too.

243 is apples...22LR is oranges...

I have a VLEH tactical and like it alot. I find the trigger to be much better than the stock ruger trigger, but still not top end of course. Mine shoots about 2 inch groups at 50 yards using just the bipod. It might do better now that its broken in and I am becoming a better shot, but I dont usually shoot targets now. I like to shoot sporting clays or other plinking targets. We lay them out at various distances from 75 yards to 120 yards on the hillside at our shooting area. Even at 100 yards Its usually takes just one shot to hit them. When you get out to 120 yards I might hit 3 out of 5 on first shot when I am in my groove.
For me thats pretty good shooting from a .22 LR. I think the rifle shoots better than I do and hope my results will get even better.
Who knows, maybe you got a lemon, or maybe your stock is flexing enough to touch the barrel. Is your scope adjustable parralax? If not what is the parralax fixed at? Most 22 specific scopes are set at 50 yards but if you use a 100 yard scope then you can have accuracy issues at 50 if your eye is not dead center to the scope. I hope you get it sorted.

rebrick 999 I hear what your saying, I also bought the tactical/target expecting a tackdriver. However all I had to do to fix mine is install a Kidd 16"ss. barrel, Kidd bolt, Kidd single stage trigger, Kidd guide rod and springs, and a bolt buffer. The receiver and charging handle worked out OK though. When I finished I decided it would all look better in a classic walnut stock. Your journey has just begun.

So you expect a projectile with a much lower ballistic coefficient (blunt nose) and much less mass (1/2 or less), travelling at 1/3 the velocity....to hold similar groups? Think about it. One travels 100 yards in a tenth of a second, the other in 1/3 of a second. One is aerodynamic. They both are dealing with the same gravity, same wind, same shooter errors. That light slow round is going to be much more effected by outside factors.

I have the same model ruger as the OP and the only thing I've done to the rifle is put the archangel Target deluxe stock on it. I can shoot 1/2 inch 5 shot groups at 50 yards. Like others have said, maybe you got a lemon.

Its also possable the rifle just dont like the brand of ammo you tryed. You didnt mention what brand ammo you used for all we know you had rem thunder duds.If shooting cheap bulk 22LRs you really cant expect much in accuracy return if you were shooting low end match ammo (wolf or the like) you should expect more but this still dont garrentee that the rifle likes the ammo or that you didnt buy a bad "lot" of that brand.

I have an older 10/22 T 20 inch barrel that will group under 3/4 inch at 50 yards 90% of the time and under 9/16 about a 1/2 inch 50% of the time and has shot a few 3/8 inch and under groups at 50 yards. No aftermarket parts the gun is 100% Ruger.I did my own trigger job and is its right at 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 pounds pull very little creep but does have some free travel in take up which dont really bother me.
The above is with ammo it likes ,if I shoot bulk ammo groups open up extremely.

I would try a few differant brand ammos before totaly blameing the rifle.

I'm going to vote ammo ... the first groups out of most of these guns always suck from my experience. My 10/22T went from 1" to 1/2" groups by just shooting it some more.

I've also tested about 20 different types of ammo through my gun and there are several types of ammo that this gun will not shoot worth a ****. We're talking 1/2" with Wolf Match and 3 - 4" with some of the others. Most of the bulk ammo will hold about a 1 - 2" group depending on what it is.

I'll give you $100 for it.:D

I didn't notice anyone mention any obvious remedies. You may have tried these already but a few of them have happened to me.

First off, make sure the scope is mounted correctly and tight. I only mention this because I had my red dot mounted slightly off the rail and killing my groups.

Second, I noticed after a few trips to the range that the V block holding the barrel in place was a bit loose.

Third I've heard some 10/22's shoot better dirty so my advice is either ship it my way or try the above and get a feel for the riflle, each one is different and I'm sure you can figure out what the deal is, it's probably something simple.

Good luck

I, on the other hand, love my model 1230 10/22. It shoots well. Out of the box it was sub 2" groups at 50 yards with a 2.5-10x40 on it. I have polished up the trigger group and added an adjustable stop to the factory trigger since then.

Ditto and Ditto

I can only add a big Ditto to what Jeep Dave said along with trying a variety of ammo as others mentioned.

Was the scope "optically centered" when you mounted it? I have had trouble with even some higher end scopes not holding POI well if the turrets are spun close to the limit in order to compensate for a mounting rail not aligned properly or barrel droop...

When trying different types of ammo, try not only a variety of brands, but variety of velocities as well. I have one build that I intended to only shoot hyper velocity rounds through. With it's Tactical Solutions barrel I could not get any better than 3 inch groups at 50 yards with several types of ammo in the 1400 to 1700 fps range.
I tossed in a new clip and to my surprise, the group moved a bit, but tightened up to the size of a quarter. I had loaded that clip with sub sonics by mistake which that gun loves.

Good luck and please let us know if you come upon a solution
