What is your experience with Thunderbolt 22 ammo? I bought a brick of 500 rds last night for $30 (cheapest I have seen anywhere) and I have seen mixed reviews on it. I know the bullets are coated in a wax or oil, and can foul pistols if not careful, but a lot of guys say it's OK ammo, a lot of guys hate it...
I know they had a recall on it last year (I checked my lot was not in the recall).

I was hoping to get your feedback...

I don't remember- I think it had to due with excessive leading... Like after 100 shts the gun wouldn't group and bullets were tumbling. But the guys that I saw complaing about that were using Walther P22 and shooting 500 rounds in an afternoon without cleaning the gun. Then they complain about crappy ammo... I don't like using lead round nose in my Ruger SR22 at all... BUT maybe Ill try this since it has the way- Uncoated bullets seem to shave when loading in that gun, so maybe these will be different. I hope so, because $.06 a round is the cheapest I have found ammo!

My experience with them in my bolt action rifles is that they are inconsistent. One shot would sound fine, the next one would be louder, and the next one would almost sound like a squib. I had to pull the bolt more than a few times to check my bore to make sure the bullet got out of the barrel. I sold what I had to a buddy that had a S&W "tactical" rifle, and he said that they leaded up his barrel so bad he couldn't get the weight of a bore snake down the barrel without it getting stuck. Just my two cents, and also why I don't plan on buying Thunderbolts ever again.

I love Thunderbolts and yes I had a bit of a leading problem with them earlier. Read a post to just lube them and found it wasn't much of a chore. While glued to the TV set just swipe-roll the bullet across a lube stick then repackage them in empty plastic mini mag boxes. Probably better use of my hands than another chocolatey treat anyway. Always goes bang, powder burns fast enough in a short pistol barrel to cycle slide reliably, cheap, what's not to like!!

I think it was the Winchester M-22s that got recalled last year, not the Thunderbolts.

My latest experience with Thunderbolts was the last time I went shooting. My little girl and I was shooting her 22/45 Lite. We were shooting Winchester 333. I kept having Fail to Eject, stovepipes, fail to feed, etc. It was terrible. I switched to Thunderbolt and her Ruger ran like a top. Not a single failure. So, I would have to place it higher than Winchester 333...but I'm sure that's not saying a lot.

I heard a lot of bad reports on them a while ago. Had a chance to get some ammo at a LGS about 6 months ago, and they had two 100 round boxes I could grab so I took them. They sat around, like I said all I heard was bad news. Well one day I was heading out to the range and figured I'd take them and at least use them up.

HOLY **** they were dead on. I used my Marlin and Glenfield Model 60's and Marlin Model 81. Wow great groups!!!! A little dirty but I always clean after going shooting so this wasn't new. No leading and now I've heard they change the formula to shoot better.

So I go to the LGS and see 500 round bricks and pick up 2 of them. And if and when I see more I grab them too.

So get some, you'll be surprised just how good they are.

I have shot many 1000s of them with no major problem. They aren't the most accurate cheap stuff out there (Federal bulk stuff and Blazers are the best) and they are VERY dirty. I suspect major problems are what another commentator said, you need to clean your gun a lot more often to keep the gunk down and avoid problems.

So there are a lot of repsonses on here about issues years ago with them... from what I gather, they changed them last year. If you search youtube and look at videos with recall and issues with ammo, they were mostly posted in 2014. They used to use a wax coating, but I rubbed these with my fingernails and there is no was- more like oily coating. I will try some hopefully this weekend and see how they do. I will post lot number too.

Remington has a recall on Thunderbolts, other ammo, 2 rifles & at leastone shotgun. Call them for lot#s. The Thunderbolt recall is on loose bullets that can stay in the barrel while the case ejects. More of a problem in a semi auto than a bollt where you should see it happen easier.

I called remington because I also have 2 rifles & it was so funny as the phone menu had a list of "if you need info for xxxx press 1, yyyy press2, zzzz press 3" Quite a long list & quite a dissapointment in remington IMHO.
