So after years of neglect and dim memories of “that old Remington doesn’t shoot well” I mounted a red dot and took her to the range last week. Immediate results showed it was better than I remembered so I brought it home and mounted a unused 1-4 AR scope. Today I took it back and tried a few different loads at silhouette distances of 40, 50, 75, & 100 yds. Three different loads resulted in easy 1” groups @ 50yds. Norma Match and Aguila SE SV both delivered five shot groups within the head of my 75yd turkey. The only problem with the ol’ girl is how fast the mag empties. 😄

I‘ve been thinking it would be fun to have an accurate semi-auto. Now I’m thinking I may have had one all along and need more than a 4x to find out.

BTW, it’s really surprising how light it is. Offhand is really a challenge.

Just got around to taking my recently acquired 552. I did a function test and it fired and ejected as it should. Took out the trigger assembly and I’ve never seen so much crud in a gun that functions! It also has an odd clip on the receiver end of the outer magazine tube holding the spring on. Not in the book that I have.

I sure hope these are before pictures.

These are before pictures. I’m refinishing the stock and was waiting on parts. Lost a spring that shot out and hit my safety glasses and time warped to another dimension. The detent in the safety was not the ball bearing as it should be but another part from something possibly compressing the spring more than it needed to be. Hence the warp speed it exited it’s lair while trying to get the pin in.

All back together. Cartridge guide installed was a no go. Stripped the magazine hanger a bit then stopped and used the part that was on it without the guide. All went back together then the inner magazine tube caught on a burr in the new outer magazine tube. Had to set it aside for awhile. A little file work and it went in. Function fired flawlessly. Now on to the next dirty gun project:)

Looked just like mine , stripped and cleaned for the first time since early 80's .
552 is one of the dirtiest shooting rifles of all time .Probably one of the most dangerous too.
This one would shoot doubles and triples at cycling rate fairly often because of the crud.

One I have belonged to Dad, he cleaned externally good but never fully disassembled it.
Been sitting in safe since he passed in 2006.
Last year while doing full clean and shoot of my rimfire rifles I finally got to it.

Just picked up a 552 at the LGS. Barrel date code is EQ. Is there a way to tell if it was 1978 or 1996? Maybe a change in sights or ?
Had a chance to shoot it today, Put an old 8x scope on it because I’m old…….shooting off a bag, light breeze on and off. 2.5” groups at 100 yards with some CCI SV. So there’s room for improvement but I’m pretty happy with that.

Ive had a couple 552, plus a few 572.

Really, for a plinker or even hunting gun, the 552/572 were pretty darn decent, and felt good in the hand.

Pops had a few he used w scouts, some "tub o bullets" Rem stuff was bad lot and blew in a 552 and a 572. New extractors and one buttstock and both back in action. Cyclone or whatever that ammo called, never used again.
Was supplied by scout group.

Looking for some advice on what may be causing the action bar to be gouging the barrel, and pretty deep too (see pics). (The gun was working fine. I disassembled to check and clean any copper fouling from shooting CCI lead-free ammo.) It wasn't like this the last time I disassembled to clean so I'm thinking I did something wrong when I reassembled or something is bent or worn. The action bar doesn't seem to be bent (see pic), but where it connects to the bolt, the connection points to the bolt are a wee bit dog eared. That area of the bolt looks ok to me see pics). There isn't any slop where the action bar rides the ammo tube. There is an area inside of the forearm where it looks like the action bar is rubbing (see pics.) Maybe this is the issue, but it doesn't look its protruding out all and definitely not enough to gouge the barrel as deep as the gouge is. I'm gonna clean that area and sand it a little too.

I appreciate any help trying to figure out this issue!

Thanks,

David
