recommend .45-70 loads for Pedersoli Quigley?

Man I worked with retired, and is unloading some of his firearms. He has a Pedersoli Quigley model in .45-70, that only has three boxes of ammo thru it. it is Mint, except a few dings on the checkering.

I only want to punch paper at 100 yards (for now), so what bullet/powder's do you recommend, or also any factory loads you recommend? I use a Forster press, and currently reload .223, .308 Win, 6.5X55, .38-40, .22-250, and .30-06.

let me know your thoughts. I put down half, and in three weeks will pay off the rifle, and get it. Thanx

A friend of mine shoots his very accurately from time to time at my range. I know he reloads with AA5744 powder and casts his own bullets. He told me he casts 415 grain bullets for shorter ranges and, I think, 480 grain bullets for longer ranges. Have you checked the castboolits site? The guys there know a ton more about reloading for Sharps rifles.

45/70

I have 3 rifles , chambered in 45/70 , a trapdoor calvary model , H&R carbine and Marlin lever action . As we all know , it can be loaded to punch paper or stop any animal on this earth . I load my own cases . I will have to check my load data books to see what they are loaded at . The last I loaded I shot 3 rounds in the H&R and went home . A train wreck would have been a mild comparison to the recoil . I was using 405 grain jacketed hollow point. I loaned the rifle and 6 rounds to my Buddy to hunt white tail in the brush with . He shot 2 rounds , missed the first one , second one hit behind the shoulder , exit wound was the size of a silver dollar . The meat was no good bruised into jelly . The deer was not dense enough to cause the hollow point to expand . Sorry to rant , you have one sweet rifle to enjoy . I'll look up my loads and define what they were .

I have a Pedersoli rolling block in 45-70. My favorite load is easy on the shoulder and accurate enough at 500 yards to hit a 14" steel plate if I don't have an audience. It consists of Starline cases, 405 GR Laser Cast bullet and 13 grains of Trail Boss powder. I have loaded and shot 150 GR. collar buttons before in the rolling block and Ruger1S. They are only accurate to 50 yards, but very easy on the shoulder. I used 12GR of Trail Boss powder for them. You are going to love your Quigley, it doesn't take much velocity to make a big hole in a target with a 45-70!

fwiw,

my bro got a Pedersoli from a freind. It was a "spare" rifle and the guy didnt want it anymore.

but you may want to readup on paper patch bullets.

i dont remember the loads but my bro made some and shot a few from the back of his PU bed in a strong crosswind. Open sights and just for fun.

but he said he shot approx 4 inch groups at 100 yards. again, not sure what laods/bulllets,

but im sure you know that any gun may not be the same or act the same just because its a particular caliber/brand or make.

So in the end you may have to do your own homework to figure out what works best in your gun.

i shoot several rifles in 45-70 and use H-4198 with all bullets, cast and jacketed. i have killed quite a few deer with the 45-70 useing open sights and scopes. targets were shot at 100 yards from bench rest, a stiff load of H-4198 and a 300 gr jacketed bullet from a ruger #3 and a ruger #1.

My components have not arrived yet.....So, i decided to get one box of Hornady Leverevolution 325 gr. FTX ammo. That's all that was available, and cost me $42!

You know how it is when you get a new firearm...gotta try her out. Anyway, I shot nearly the whole box at 100 yards, and grouped about an inch and a half. if my 56 year old eyes were better, I'm sure she'd go under an inch. very pleasant to shoot, due to the weight of the gun..even though these rounds put out over 3,000 ft. lbs of energy.

Can't wait till my components come in.
