Okay guys...I think I've covered all the bases for November's Challenge.

As a side note, or if you didn't follow all of October's thread, we're adding a 200-Yard portion this month. If you have a range with that distance, give it a try. It will be a completely separate class and will be a pretty much "run what ya brung," one-time thing.

Remember too, next month is the beginning of the Indoor portion of our Challenge. Again, this will be a totally separate class and will also be a "shoot what ya brought." The Indoor class will be run from December through February and is mostly for our shooters to the North.....but hey, if you have a 100 yard indoor range, give it a shot.

Hmmmmm......decisions, decisions...100 yards and 10 shots or 200 yards and 10 shots....hmmmmm.
Who am I kidding, you know I'll be setting up on the 200 yard range.
I wonder if I can hit inside the 3 ring on the I_BS for all 10 shots at 200 yards?

It ought to be easier when the wind isn't gusting above 25 knots....

 

First off, are you guys totally 100% sure a 22lr will even go that far? This target will be a challenge for those not having a canted scope base. I calculate I will have to hold over between 18 and 19 MOA from my 100 yd zero, which is close to maxed out on the elevation turret. No worries, that's why 2x4s were invented LOL. The good news is that the effect of ammunition muzzle velocity variance on vertical is almost 4X greater at 200 yd than at 100 yd . This ought to be fun!

 

GS, I prefer the 200 yard range for most of my shooting.
Rarely gets used by the majority of the locals.
Has steels and target frames to fit y'er mood.
I use rimfire at 200 mainly to work on wind judgement.
What I've learned using the 22 and 17 at 200 yards
has helped tremendously on my current centerfire project.
200 yards with the 22lr has about the same time of flight as a 69 gr 223 smk at 450 yards.
Learning to pay attention to the environmental wind-i-cators has made a difference.

 

Lots of good scopes with enough vertical in them if you use Burris rings with the inserts in them, or you can go with a base with 20 or 25 moa built in, you may lose the ability to zero at 25 yards with either but usually not.

Furthest out target is at 200 meters, and requires 27 moa of adjustment from my 50yd setting.

My Leupold VX-6 3.5-18X Duplex Fire Dot has 70 moa of elevation, which gives me enough to get a 200m zero.

However I did install the Kidd 10 moa rail just to keep it more centered.

Unfortunately my home range won't allow a 22's to shoot past 100yds because of our baffle system, and lack of a berm directly behind the 200yd line.

That's a nice looking facility and I'd bet that setup helps with the wind conditions. Unfortunately, someone made the ceiling too low .

I would like to request clarification on the guidelines for this month's target. There are two sets of Guidelines listed; the top one seems to indicate a different (10-bull) target. The lower one indicates a 10-shot group only. This month's target is C-T-C max spread for a 10-shot group only, regardless of the scoring rings, correct? No penalty for placement of the group relative to the target center?

Correct...you're looking at 2 entirely different targets. The first target is intended to be shot at 100 yards and includes 10 each targets of 1 shot each...worst edge scoring.

The second target is intended to be shot at 200 yards and is based solely on a 10-shot group size...groups are measured center-to-center.

As in last month...do not automatically assume a .224 bullet hole in your paper. Take an average of 3 to 4 holes and use the average of those 3 or 4 holes to calculate your bullet diameter.

So long as your bullets land on the paper in the 200 yard Challenge, that's really all that matters. Now, it would benefit you as a shooter to get them as close to the "X" as possible...but that's up to you.

This is the I_BS one shot one dot for 100 yard use...

This is the 200 yard 10 shot group target...

We could even shoot it for score if'n you want further complications...

10 shots worst edge scoring, if it stays inside the central ring you get the X.

 

Shot 4 targets last Friday in decent conditions. 65° and 2-4 mph winds.

Shot the first 2 with the same new batch of Federal TNT that I shot last months target with.
Unfortunately I couldn't get it to repeat last months performance. Tried it with and without the tuner, different holds and so on, but I kept getting some serious flyers.
So I shot an 80, and a 81 with that batch of Federal.

I then switched to a brand new batch of CCI TNT with much better results.
Shot this 85, and a 87 (that some how got tossed). My wife took the 5th.

Actually the wall doesn't help because the overhead baffles cause a lot of swirling vertical winds. That wall seems to exaggerate that effect.
That end of the line is reserved for position shooters who can live with that.

I always shoot from the middle bays, or the far right of the line. That far right bench has a hill running down the right side, which can help with certain wind directions.

 

Blah, blah, blah...2-4 mph...I was out Sunday am and it was blowing 24 mph!

50, 62, and 75 at 100 yards. Y'er I_BS target is a hoot, Smooth!

In those 25 knot gusts I was all over the place at 200 yards with the 17 hmr

I'm gonna get some funny looks from my buddy when I head over to his range and hang targets up at 200 for a rimfire..He already looks at me weird when I hang em at 100...lol

Thanks for the clarification, Bob! I missed the 100 yd target image, hence my confusion.

Smooth - some sheetrock would probably take care of the swirling wind . The 100 and 300 yd ranges here unfortunately have no walls or buffers of any sort, and the wind also tends to swirl in a completely unpredictable fashion. I have accepted the fact that I simply have to wait for relatively mild wind conditions in order to shoot any halfway competitive targets. That's ok...we usually get about one of those every month LOL.

Not a dumb question at all, Paul....

Simply make sure all the appropriate information is on the front of your target..take a photo of it and upload it to a photo hosting site. From there, paste it into a "reply to thread" box like this...That's all there is to it. I'll take care of the rest.

If you have a problem posting the target, take a photo of it and e-mail it to me...I'll post it for you. Since virtually everyone on here has my e-mail address, it's Dnttech@yahoo.com

Horribly busy at work the last week or so but I did go out fox shooting last night with a friend and before I did, I went to the field to test zero on my Mauser M12 Max in .243. I used the 200yard target at 100, 200 and 300 yards and smashed the bull to bits ha ha. Wish my rimfires could do that.

Anyway, I like the look of these targets. I will dig the .22LR out for the 100yarder and probably the hummer for the 200yarder.

Few fields are off limits at the moment as it pheasant season is upon us, so the game strips mean I am not disturbing the shoot areas while we have some let shoots organised over the next few weeks. I will find some fields at some point to get frustrated though. Looking forward to it.

Your target was just posted...the first at 200 yards.

 

I want to see what the serious bench guys can do at 200 yards.
Those with tuned rifles and decent ammunition from quality rests.
I've had some 1/2 moa 5 shot groups with rimfire at 200 yards
but those results are few and far between.

the wind is not your friend, unless you had a couple burritos for lunch.

So your roughly 3 inch group at 200yds is looking pretty solid.
I have to applaud your willingness to continuosly go out and shoot in what most of us would describe as mini wind storms.

Because this months 200yd target may be a one off, I'm thinking it may be time to bring out the "Hammer".
If I do, it will be shot off a lowly Bi-Pod.

I dunno, Jaia. I've never taken a .22 out to 200 yards. I can see somewhere between 1.5 and 2.0 inches as being achievable on a consistent basis...provided the wind doesn't kill ya.

I can also see getting under 1" once in awhile, but that's gonna be tough. It's certainly not going to be a regular event.

After taking a pretty close look at your targets, I think you're shooting that distance pretty darn well.
