New 10/22 - Jam city with BX25 or Butler Creek

Brand new plain as day 10/22 carbine. Jams within the first few rounds of either BX25 or Butler Creek 25rd mags. The old cram the round into the side of the barrel, which leads me to believe that the slop in the mag lockup is the problem. There is play present in both configurations.

Will try and find a heavier spring to replace the factory plunger spring with and see if that remedies it. Always fun trying to locate the problem on these new ones, but normally a simple fix. Though seldom ever occurs after you get down to about 20 left in the mag.

I think both the BX-25 and Butler Creek mags aren't as long as the factory rotary and they leave a gap. I've seen a guy try and remedy it with stiffer springs on the plunger, but the springs I got are too thick to fit up into the housing. May try again with a different spring on that. Just more forward tension so the mag isn't allowed to back up towards the trigger group.

I'm using a bolt a TG from a different 22 currently til mine come back from Brimstone & CPC. We'll see what differences I have with the stuff intended to be in the rifle installed. In the meantime, I'm just running ammo through it and getting it all broken in. I did smooth up the inside of the receiver a little, but only a little.

As for ammo, it doesn't like Federal Automatch at all. 4 stovepipes in a single 25rd mag. This with a Tac Sol barrel and TandemKross extractor. Browning bulk yielded 1 jam in 50 (#49 actually). 500 box bulk Winchester Western which shot very well out of another 10-22 at a Steel Challenge ran flawless today. Four 25rd mags (2 steel lips, 2 BX-25) shooting fast (mimicking steel challenge on gong targets) and zero failures. May have to hit Academy and see if any of that is left. For $25/500 stuff, its been good. As far as accuracy, its just got to be minute of squirrel for its purpose. Ignite and not jam up. Have not ran SV or Mini Mags in it yet. Wanted to try as much of the cheaper options as I could first.

I've used Butler Creek 25-rounders in the past with no issues.

They have two versions... plastic feed lips & metal.

I've heard nothing but bad things about the plastic feed lip versions so I avoided them.

Had good luck with the metal feed lip versions including when used with that quickee loader device (what-ever it's called) they make for them.

Don't know what the deal with the BX-25's is. Some swear by them, some swear at them, doesn't seem to be any in-between. I haven't had a chance to work with them yet.

Only reason I bought BX-25's was because of the direction the 2016 election looked like it was going to end up. As we all know, one of the candidates was (still is) staunchly anti 2nd.

I've got a hot lips plastic version that I had a friend get for $60 at a gun show in like 2002 for me. At that time, those stupid things were as high as $100-120 at shows (clinton ban era). Still have it and it actually has ran fairly well. Have a pair of steel lips I got after the ban sunsetted in 2004 (which are now like $10 on CDNN). And I've got a pair of BX25's I picked up a few weeks back. And granted this experience with with the pair of 10/22's I've had for several years, but I haven't had really any better worse luck between the Butler Creeks than I have the BX25s. The new rifle has its issues right now, and I don't think its mag specific. It will jam that Automatch with the factory rotary.

BTW.. the bolt that came with the new gun that went to CPC is going into my Superstock 10/22. Its old 1991 factory bolt is being retired. The lightweight new gun got a JWH titanium nitride bolt ordered for it today and will arrive Friday. Looks like good stuff and the colors will match up fairly well. Figured, why not.

Have you even tried to see how factory 10 round mags work? I didn't see it mentioned although you could have just forgot to mention it. Would seem pointless to troubleshoot 25 round magazine issues when it's really a gun issue(s). Like the stovepipes.

And fyi...I have three 10/22s with different stages of after market mods. I have not found any ammo(so far...knock on wood) that causes either of the 3 guns any cycling issues.

Extractor upgrade
Scotchbrite the inside of the receiver.

I have 1/2 dozen 10-rounders for my race rifle because it will be shot from the bench.

Will also be used with my Mannlicher because A: it's a special rifle & B: because it has the old school thumb buster style mag release.

I've cleaning up the inside of my 10/22 receiver's for years with 400 wet/dry (wet).

Only issue I've run into so far was with the [2nd edition] Collector Series I recently purchased. For some reason the action is very stiff with JWH bolt & KIDD handle.

Sanded the top & bottom of the KIDD handle thinking it's sitting too high in the pocket. Little better, but not much.

Works better with PC handle, but not as smooth as my other 10/22's. Thinking put a PC extractor (have one on hand) in the collector series bolt, put it back in & call it good. It's the one factory Ruger bolt I would consider getting tuned.

Automatch jams with factory rotary mags. Its got a Tandemkross extractor in it. I'm going to chalk it up to being new for now. My other 10/22's eat about anything, but I've had time to mess with them. Still working on this one. Its also using a borrowed trigger group and bolt currently. I'll get serious with it once the stuff that's going to reside in it comes in.

For S & giggles I pulled the bolt handle out of it today. The factory handle that I "kind of" polished on. Threw in one from another 10/22 that I polished quite a bit years back in there. Put it back together, had 1 stovepipe in 75rds with Automatch which was previously hanging up probably 1 of every 6-7 shots. When my other stuff comes in, I'll work over the inside of the receiver and may have this problem fixed. Kidd bolt handle, JWH bolt, & Brimstone tier 2 TG, should be good to go with most ammo.

Its got a Tandemkross extractor in it.
Check the extractor. I just went through the same problem.
I just put a TK extractor in a speed match 10/22 and it chipped after less then 500rds. They're sending a replacement, we'll see how that one works - always had good luck with TK till that one.

Got the JWH bolt today. While I had it down, I ran through the inside of the receiver with some 600 grit and got rid of the overspray (no, i didn't hammer down and damage anything with sandpaper - which to me would be really hard since I sanded the dog out of another 10-22 long ago and it runs like a machine). Threw in the JWH bolt which is tighter fitting than the factory and leaves a drag line on the opposite side of the receiver. Kind of wondered, as the bolt in my hand, would loosely hold a cartridge, but you could shake it out of the extractor very easily. The factory bolt would hold the round solid.

Regardless, ran 75 rounds of Fed Automatch through with zero malfunctions. Only jams came with the old Hot lips mag I loaded up just for the heck of it. But of course, it is what it is and no more. Its getting there.
