My little Vudoo Three-60 Build Thread & Journey

I wanted to do a build thread documenting my Vudoo journey and experience. Hopefully this will help someone in the future with decisions on setups, accessories, etc. Worst case it’s just some fun eye candy and entertainment for the community.

Long Post Incoming - I realized I can be a bit long winded and delve into details quite heavily because that’s what I look for. However, I’ve added TL;DRs after each segment for a brief summary for those that just want to skim. Feel free to scroll past my essay sections and look for the:
TL;DR Example - I talk too much so here’s a summary (TL;DR - too long; didn't read).

Decisions and Ordering Process:
As many of you will recall, this journey started out with asking the forum if they could sell me on a Vudoo over a RimX. After some great input and feedback, I decided that the ability to swap pre-fit barrels was not as important to me as a 60 degree bolt throw. I also received reassurance that the common complaint about feeding issues because of the magazine design was mostly due to people not loading carefully. So, I decided to take the plunge.

The next step was deciding on a barrel length and contour. Again, with a lot of feedback from the community, both here and on SH, I was able to make an informed decision. I decided on the longer wait time to order one of the Bartlein 1.20 Straight Contour Barrels in 24 inches. The main reason for doing this was balance. I will be using the rifle mainly in NRL and PRS competitions and balance is a huge factor. Also my range doesn’t allow for muzzles to be pointed up at all so for practice I have to keep the rifle level. A well balanced setup makes that a lot easier - holding/carrying it with my hand just in front of the mag well and it not tipping up when on a bag/barricade.

Mid November I called Vudoo and placed my order for the Three-60 Repeater Action (black) with the 24 inch straight 1.20 inch Bartlein Barrel (spun polished). I was quoted 3-4 months for the lead time which seemed reasonable. The Barreled Action arrived at my FFL this week and I scooted on down to pick it up.

Overall my order experience was extremely positive. The team at Vudoo are super great people and very happy to answer any questions and address concerns. I was able to speak with Paul (the owner) a couple times before ordering, getting some feedback on my choices. I mainly dealt with Jill after that. They were very kind even when I bugged them a few times over the last month to see if the barrels had come in from Bartlein.

TL;DR - Decided I wanted a nice 22lr bolt action and settled on Vudoo (360 action) because of the quality, support, and 60 degree bolt throw. Has a big truck axle barrel for balance.
Initial Impressions (barreled action):
When I first got the barreled action home and unpacked I was extremely pleased. The packaging was top notch and the quality of the parts definitely lived up to my expectations. The finish on the action is pristine and the barrel’s spun polished finish is stunning (I really like the look of polished barrels).

The barrel is a bit comically large for a rimfire gun, but I’m still very happy with my choice. Cycling the bolt for the first time was an absolute joy. Buttery smooth and very solid feeling overall. I am extremely happy I decided on the 360 action as the 60 degree bolt throw just feels right to me.

I’m not sure if I dig the bolt knob, but we’ll see how it feels when I get it out to shoot. Feels a bit chunky to me after getting used to the Area 419 knob on the CZ. I did pick one of the Area 419 knobs for the Vudoo though so I’ll try both out and see which I like more.

Preview of gallery image.

Overally, very impressed with the build quality, fit & finish, and the packaging of the barreled action. I wouldn’t hesitate at this point to recommend them to anyone.

TL;DR - Great quality, great packaging, very happy with it.
Trigger Selection:
I decided to give the TriggerTech Diamond Single Stage a try as everyone raves about it. I’ve never actually used an upgraded trigger on a bolt action so I decided to splurge a little and get the highest recommended option. I was tempted by the Timney options, but figured I can always swap out later if I decided to.

Preview of gallery image.

The one part of my selection I’m still unsure of is the flat faced trigger lever. I really like the flat trigger on my Sig and from what I’ve read it all comes down to preference. Hopefully I made the right choice for me, but we’ll find out as I get to shoot it more.

TL;DR - Got a TriggerTech Diamond Single Stage with the flat lever. Never had one so I hope I like it.
Chassis/Stock Selection:
I picked up a couple different chassis options for the Vudoo over the last few months. One of them will end up being for our R700 .223 Trainer, but I like having options. First chassis I picked up was a second hand MDT ACC Premier (Gen 1). I am a big MDT fan and really like the feel of this chassis. It is a little less stiff/solid than I’d like, but I’ll end up giving it a try. Shortly after I came across a great deal on an MPA Matrix Pro with the full weight kit. This is a chassis I’d been eyeing for quite a while because of its features and I just like the look. I have mixed feelings about the Raspberry Blue Cerakote finish, but figured if I love it I can change that later.

Preview of gallery image.

Preview of gallery image.

I decided to try out the MPA as the R700 is already mounted and balanced in the MDT and I just kind of like the features a bit more for a competition setup. The wide forend, integrated ARCA rail, and endless adjustability is what drew me to this chassis. Obviously I’ve never been able to shoot in a competition with it so we’ll see how I actually like it.

If neither chassis tickles my fancy I’ll be selling the MPA in order to pick up a Manner PRS-TCS stock. I’ve absolutely loved shooting our CZ 457 VMTR in the Manners stock (one from the CZ 457 VPT MTR) so there is a good chance I’ll go that route down the road.

TL;DR - I am using an MPA Matrix Pro but will try our MDT ACC Premier if I don’t like it. If I don’t like either I’ll be picking up a Manners PRS-TCS.
Scope Selection:
Now I know I’ll get some crap for this, but for now I have an Arken EP-5 (5-25x56) as the scope. Was curious to try it out after hearing mostly good things about it for so long (for the price). Have tried it out now on my 10/22 and haven’t been overly impressed. It’s better than the Athlon Argos BTR that I had previously, but not on the level I’d like. So in the next couple months I’ll be looking for a new scope. I’m not ready to step up to something like a ZComp, so I’ve been leaning toward trying out the Athlon Cronus BTR Gen II.

TL;DR - My cheap *** is using an Arken EP-5 for now but plan to upgrade soon.
Putting it all together:

Trigger Install:

Any of you that have put together a Vudoo probably already know this, but the trigger pins are royal pain to get in. I watched some videos of R700 trigger installs and they looked way easier to drive in. Took quite a bit of pounding with a hammer and punch. Not the end of the world, but definitely not a “fun” experience. I was kind of scared I was going to damage something with how hard and many times I had to whack them.

Preview of gallery image.

I set the trigger to about 1lb pull weight for now. The CZ is currently set at 1.5lbs which I’ve been pretty happy with so I didn't want to go too low to start off. I’m sure I’ll play with it more as I get more comfortable.

Chassis Mounting:
The barreled action was already quite heavy (*Edit/Update: 9 lbs 4.9oz with bolt and trigger) so my vice struggled to hold it while mounting it into the Chassis. Ended up just flipping it over on my sled and got it in. I set the torque to the chassis recommended level of 65 in-lbs. Fitment looked spot on and this barrel took up most of the available barrel channel space.

Preview of gallery image.

Preview of gallery image.

Preview of gallery image.

Preview of gallery image.

It might be ever so slightly skewed to the left side of the channel but I wasn't sure if I should loosen everything up and try to get it perfectly centered. Any advice or input there would be appreciated.

Scope Mounting:
Nothing really exciting here. I did use the Vudoo recommended “Medium” 1.1 inch rings (Vortex Pro-Series for now) for the scope and it’s d*mn near perfect height over bore with the 40 MOA rail. I was originally going to go with a 30 MOA, but Vudoo (I think it was Greg or Jill) recommended I just go for the 40 MOA to get me to further distances and could still do zero at 50 yards.

Preview of gallery image.

Balancing:
As I said before, I chose the 24” 1.20 Straight barrel for balance purposes and others have said they were able to get away with no weights in the MPA Matrix Pro. I tested it right away after getting the scope on and it will balance on a bag without weights, but it is still a tad butt heavy and will rock back if you touch it. While not a huge issue, my range has super strict rules about barrels pointing over the berm so I wanted it to stay put if it gets bumped.

Preview of gallery image.

Preview of gallery image.

I added 3 of the internal weights to the front along with the steel spigot. This combination gave the rifle a really solid balance feel on the bag. I can tap it, slap it around lightly, or bump it and it won’t rock back. It is a touch heavier than I was hoping. I was aiming to stay around 18 lbs, but I’m just over 20lbs. However, the Arken EP5 is heavy (almost 40oz) so hoping once I upgrade I’ll be able to remove one of the internal weights and drop another half pound.

Overall, I’m happy with the balance and will report back after some practice, testing, and matches.

TL;DR - Balanced out well with the barrel and a few internal weights. It’s a tad heavier than I hoped but I think it’s fine.

End of the Beginning:

I’m very happy with the rifle and with Vudoo Gun Works. So far it has been an excellent experience and I can’t wait to get out and shoot it. I have plenty of ammo testing and learning to do on this gun (and in general). I will post updates as to what changes I make to the rifle, ammo test results, etc here as time goes on. I generally can’t leave well enough alone so you’ll probably see a good number of changes happen with the setup over the next year.

Thanks for reading and a special thank you to everyone who’s helping me with advice throughout this journey. The RFC community is truly something special.

Congratulations on the fantastic new rifle.

I'm sure you will get pages of entries if you decide to do a PIF with it.

Hope it shoots well for you.
Thank you kindly! I'm really hoping it's a shooter. So I've been racking my brain and did a google search and can't figure out what PIF stands for in this context 😆.

Pay It Forward

There is a forum here that people offer up unwanted/unneeded items that still have value.

If it is something like a higher value item, or one of the traveling boxes there is usually a random type drawing to give many people a chance to win.

It was kind of a joke (unless you are actually wealthy enough to give away Vudoo rifles. If that is the case, count me in please.)
LOL, I totally should have caught the joke. I do wish I were that wealthy, but I did just check out the PIF section here and love the concept. I'll have to donate something there one of these days. Thanks for letting me know about it. I was sitting here feeling extra dumb for not knowing what that meant 😅

Good luck with it, I followed your Rim X / Vudoo thread with great interest. I'm looking forward to a range report and your impressions while shooting.
Really appreciate it. I'll definitely be posting up everything as I go. Hopefully it stays interesting or at least entertaining. Still much for me to learn.

So made my first little change. I wanted to make sure my magazine latch was adjusted properly for the mags. After getting the latch set and the L3i mag catches adjusted I decided to test them. I ran a bunch of dummy rounds through all of them (Vudoo and L3i Mags). After working the bolt about 100 times, I decided I wasn't in love with the knob. I swapped it out for the Area 419 Bolt Knob (same one we run on the CZ) and I'm much more comfortable with the feel.

Image

PS: I went with the "Defiance" version of the knob as it has the standard R700 5/16″-24 thread pitch but is a little stubbier than their standard R700 knob.

So after playing with the Vudoo for the past few days, I decided I really didn't love the feel of the MPA Matrix Pro. It's not bad, I just realized I like holding and getting behind the CZ a lot more. I really love that Manners stock so I decided to pick up a PRS-TCS stock off the Market Place on SH. Should have it sometime in the next week and I can do a nice side by side with them.

Our CZ 457 for reference:

If anyone is looking, I'll probably be selling the MPA in the next couple of weeks (unless I don't like the Manners for some reason).

For anyone wondering about the Vudoo 360 barreled action weight with the 24 inch straight 1.20, I took the gun apart last night and weighted it.

9 lbs 4.9oz (with bolt and trigger). Bolt by itself weighs 9.8oz and Trigger should be ~3oz.

Manners TCS just arrived today and couldn't help but spend my lunch getting it put together. All in all, I'm pretty happy with the results. The stock feels really good to hold and get behind. I still need to make all the fine adjustments, but overall I am pleased with it.

The whole setup is about 1.25 lbs lighter than with the Matrix Pro, but I could get than down by another pound if I change out to an Aluminum Rail (like the Area 419 - 6oz). The rifle balances just fine without the rail and the steel version is ~1.4 lbs with no weights (I kept one weight in front to fill the space). So overall once I swap scopes and pick up another rail, I should be close to 2 lbs lighter and should weigh in at ~17lbs. Current weight is ~18.75lbs.

The barrel looks massive now 😆

Small update: Feels like I'm never going to get to go shoot this d@mn rifle. I have a range day scheduled for March 23rd though so I'll be able to post some feedback, ammo test results, etc soon. In the mean time, ended up trading my MPA Chassis for a Vortex Razor and some ammo. Color actually matches the stock decently well and definitely an improvement in optics clarity.

Made it out to the range today. Got just under 500 rounds through the rifle before we had to take off for the day. She can definitely shoot, even with crappy $0.10/rd Fiocchi Range Dynamics I have a ton of. Shot around 100 rounds for groups in total just to see what it could do. The rest of time we spent shooting off bags, standing, etc. Also, my Accutac bipod didn't make it back from warranty repair so was stuck with the old caldwell which isn't the best, especially with a heavier rifle. Not sure if that would have improved the groups, but it wasn't a try hard kind of day.

I will say I was surprised with how hard it was the close the bolt on this ammo. I was a bit silly and only took the two bricks with me so didn't get a chance to compare it to anything else I have (SK, Eley, Norma, RWS, etc). I know they say the Vudoo's are chambered for Lapua/SK so maybe that's part of the reason. I'll probably create a new thread and ask if anyone has had similar issues with different types of ammo. I don't plan to run this ammo after the 1000 round break-in/seasoning, but was still a bit concerned.

Image

First 4 rows we causally shot for groups. After that we started messing around with getting off 5-10 shots quickly, shooting off the bag, etc.

We also did some 100 yard shooting. Nothing to write home about as it was raining and had gotten a tad gusty by that point (5-10 mph winds switching between left, right, and head on). Managed to get a few MOA groups but most were a bit all over the place. Overall, a solid first range day with the gun. Would have been happier if we were able to get out on the Silhouette Range, but there was an event today so it wasn't open. As long as the bolt closing issue doesn't persist with other ammo I'll be very happy with the rifle. My hand started hurting a bit from ramming the bolt forward hard just to be able to close the bolt. We did a carbon cleaning about half way through which helped a bit, but was still pretty stiff.

My initial impressions of the rest of the gear:
  • The stock is fantastic. While I do miss the stability of the Matrix Pro, I like the overall feel of the Manners a lot better. Feels just like the CZ but heavier.
  • The flat shoe TT Diamond is excellent. The break is so clean and crisp. We only have it set down to ~1 lb right now, but I am happy with it for now. I'll probably try going down to 12oz at one point though.
  • Arken EP5 is actually doing just fine. I decided to take off the Razor after playing with it a bit. I didn't like the EBR-2C reticle and really prefer having a center dot.

#29 ·
Mate, that sounds like an ammo issue - I can't comment on Fiocchi as I've never used it. I can tell you that I have a number of rim fires here with barrels chambered with various 22LR match reamers including a few Vudoos, Rim X, B14R etc. Some of these actions ( Anschutz, Lithgow, Weihrauch - all built here in Australia) won't even chamber bulk ammo like CCI due to the bullet shapes and bullet engraving due to the depth of the chamber. I request HS at 043 and chamber depth cut to suit SK/Lapua on all my 22LR builds. Even factory guns like the Anschutz 54 and Weihrauch HW60/66 sometimes struggle with hard bolt close on some ammunition brands.

Before you fret too much about this, I'd give that bore a good clean and try a bit of SK Standard Plus if you have any. Never say never but I couldn't imagine Vudoo messing up the chamber dimensions or head space on that 360.

P.S. Did you by any chance try to extract a live round? I'd bet that it probably wouldn't budge! All 3 of my Vudoos will extract a live Lapua round comfortably.

#35 · (Edited)
I will try feeding and extracting some SK today just to see if it has the same issue. I did try to extract one round and it got stuck in the chamber and would not come out. Had to pry it out with a tool and it was pretty stuck in there.

Edit/Update:
Looks like it was just a case of the chamber being too tight for more massed produced ammo. I tested some SK and Eley and it chambered and ejected just fine. Norma (RWS Made stuff), Federal, Fiocchi, and CCI made the bolt super hard to close. I forced it on the Norma Match I had and it got stuck in the chamber. So I guess I'll just be shooting SK and Eley for the rest of the break-in/seasoning period 😅

#36 ·
Odd the Federal and Norma don't chamber. I used Fed Ultra Match UM22 fora few years when it was available, discontinued now, and it was very accurate and chambered easily. I also have used the Norma Match and Tac just for shorter range practice and it also worked fine. It must be their new stuff that is different.

#38 ·
You have one of their newer Bartlein 1.2's also right? I really thought the Norma would work okay because it's made by RWS and I've heard a lot of people shoot RWS in their Vudoos, but maybe the bullet is just a tad too big. If I get some time I'll take the micrometer to the all the ammo I have and see if there's a measurable difference.
