Does the bolt normally seem like a loose fit on all 67's? Mine has a lot of slop in it until it is cocked. Can this be improved any if it is normal or fixed if not normal? Would it make a differance since it seems pretty snug when cocked?
Thanks for any input.

My Dad's 67a

My experience is similar to yours. My dad recently gave me his Model 67a which he purchased as a boy in the '50s with hard earned cotton picking money. I like the simple action, but the bolt does seem to be pretty loose. I can easily see a gap between the chamber end of the barrel and the bolt face. The bolt also wiggles around even when "locked". Given the wiggly bolt, I was not expecting much from my dad's little gun other than to teach my kids on it one day and pass it and its history down to them. I was happy to discover that it was easy handling and AMAZINGLY accurate for the circumstances. I have not grouped it, but it consistantly hits whatever I point it at. I cleaned some really old, hard powder deposits from the chamber end of the barrel that were causing that gap I mentioned earlier. The gap is still there, but it has closed quite a bit with the cleaning. One thing I have not been able to master is the extractor of the rifle. Most of the time the spent case is only pulled a little ways out of the chamber before the extractor gives up and releases the rim. I keep a little pair of needlenose pliers with me to pull out the cases when they hang up like that. Anyone else have this experience?

All in all a great little rifle. In fact, when my scope went down on my Savage 64 (OK, when I dropped and broke my scope for the Savage) right before squirrel season, I took the 67a on my first hunt and it did just fine.

Question ? does the bolt still have slop when you have a shell in the chamber? a lot of these will have some movement in bolt when empty but the rim of the shell will normaly take care of the slop when loaded.

I am very lucky...I got a well used 67A this Summer, and am in the process of refinishing for a young shooter. The bolt is not as tight as a target gun, but there seems to be almost no slop. I am refinishing the barrel and action in Plumb Brown, and the wood will be lots of coats of oil. The stock was reshapped by someone in the past, but it is intended to be a shooter, so while the Brown is not origional, it does look pretty cool, and it is my first attempt with the finish...I'm liking it for certain projects, like this one.

By the way, with a round in the chamber...there is no slop at all, same for the cocking of the bolt...tight.
