Model 41 - different barrel lengths

Moderators: I posted this by mistake over in the S&W Revolvers Forum...Sorry for the confusion. Rod

Took some pics of my pair of Model 41 Smiths, this morning. Pictured are three barrel lengths: 7-3/8", 5-1/2" heavy target, and the rarely seen 5-1/2" field barrel with it's red insert Baughman front sight.

Of the three, I shot Bullseye 50' indoor matches with the 5-1/2" heavy target/walnut stocked one, while in my 30's (~ 1979). It was more accurate than the guy pulling the trigger 100% of the time, but still, we were contenders in the Connecticut Pistol League matches most of the time.

Later I found the 5-1/2" field barrel in a village gunshop gathering dust. I don't remember the price, but it was under $50...oh, those halcyon days of yore!! I built up a field holster for it yesterday and that's the last pic. The gun's weight suits me better now, in my mid-70's, than either of the other two bbl. lengths.

The 7-3/8" bbl'd gun actually belongs to one of my sons...but has taken up safe space with me for the last decade. I rarely shoot it, finding the longer bbl. gives me the wobbles, that aren't a problem with the shorter tubes.

Hope the pics do them justice...they're really great guns. BTW, I refinished the walnut stocks on one of them back when I was competing. Didn't like the slippery feel of the issue target stocks, even with their steadying checkering.

Best regards, and do yourself a favor guys, scratch up the dough for one of these beauties and treat yourself to a truly superb target pistol. Rod

Looking good Rod, thanks for posting (we all like pictures)!

I'm real late to the model 41 party having only recently purchased my first one, a 5.5" model manufactured in 1967. I haven't fired yet as I'm refinishing the anatomical grips that came with it - and I'm trying to decide on a suitable pair of either OEM or aftermarket grips. I might even get both, which will of course then force me to buy another 41, LOL.

Hello Rodfac

You do have a nice selection of M-41's and your leather skills are very impressive, always enjoy hearing success stories. I do have a question since I have always though the "Field" barrel was 5" instead of 5.5", can you measure it again to confirm the length? Good shooting!

“do yourself a favor guys, scratch up the dough for one of these beauties and treat yourself to a truly superb target pistol.”

I took your advice many years ago and have never regretted that decision. In fact, I’ve accumulated three of these beauties for a small collection of my own. Any ammunition is hard to find these days but you need to get them out of the safe and on to the firing range. They are just too much fun to let them sit idle. The field barrel is my favorite too but I paid a lot more for mine than you did. Good find!

I hope you won’t mine me being a little bit picky, but you have called your field barrel a 5 1/2”. It’s actually a 5”.

Two of mine. First is a September 1959 with a field barrel. The other is a 1986 that I’ve tricked out with Rink grips and a Docter red dot sight.

What parts did you use to put that red dot on your 41. Did you have to have it drilled or take out the sights and then adapt it to the current dovetail. Thanks

M/41 Barrel lengths...............

Last year I acquired a 1979 vintage M/41 with the 5 1/2" barrel, nice enough gun but a little later I found a Field barrel for it. I prefer the field barrel as it gives the gun better balance and handling characteristics.

Thx, Mr Alex, I like the feel of the stocks now...oil finished, more or less like a military oil finish. The tape's a good idea, and one that my wife has used on her G-23.

Gunsmith: Yep, I agree on the 'Field Barrel'...the gun balances much better now in my hands. I long ago gave up Bullseye competition when the optical sights came in. With cheaters on, I can still see the front sight clearly, and that's the name of the game.

Too, I've yet to see a holster that'd work well with the modern optics. All of my handguns get used regularly and each has a holster of its own...I do my own leatherwork so it's no big expensive deal to lay out the design, then make up a pattern. It's enjoyable work for me...

Kalamazoo...good lookin' pair you've got there...nice wood on them too.

Bastogne, do you see much improvement in your scores with the super target grips? Not a fan of the red dot on pistols but they do appeal to a great many shooters. I have one on an AR build that my son gave me for Xmas. 2 MOA dot gives me virtually same groups size as the issue irons sights at 100. With well assembled loads tailored to it, the gun will shoot 2" at 100 with a sling, & NRA sitting position. My Colt HBAR from the late 70's will cut that by 1/2" but it's fitted with stock and fore end weights, Nat'l Match Jones sights and a free floated fore end.

Best Regards, Rod

I think you may be able to tell me what exactly I need for replacement front sight.
Bought the 41 w/ extra barrels included. Guess previous owner tossed original front
Sight due to scope mounting on one of them-I don’t want the mounts on there.
Any information greatly appreciated-
