Marlin model 50

I had been looking for one for years, saw quite a few but for me it was a low priority and the prices always seemed way to high and even on the high priced ones they often were missing the safety levers and the ones that had the manual extractors often had that missing too. I finally picked up a Ranger 34-A marked version reasonable (non-extractor version - testing with dummy rounds was a little frustrating having to push each out with a cleaning rod after cycling tests). From the previous posts I think mine may have been the E version, it has a front sight grooved for a hood, which is missing, and the short base rear peep which needed a couple parts but now is complete with two eye pieces.

Does anyone have a good picture of the correct front sight hood? I have not found a good picture of one in any of my searches to know what I need to look for.

I found mine had the small balancing block for standard velocity in it, Numrich has the large ones in stock, so I now have both. I have not fired it yet but I think I will start with the heavy block and standard velocity and see if it will cycle just in case the spring has weakened over the years, if not I will switch in the small because I want to stay with standard velocity. Here is the link, the one I got looked like new, much better then the one they have pictured - gunpartscorp product 260610

I collect mainly Savage's but because of the similarities in the magazines I always wanted one of these for comparison and The open bolt design has also always had my interest. I found to use the Savage 1903 magazines you need a new notch cut for the catch slightly higher than that used on a Savage, I actually had a Savage magazine for several years that had an extra notch and found it was located right for the Model 50. I also found that the Model 50 type magazines were also made specifically to fit Savage's, those versions would require a new notch to fit a Marlin Model 50.

Here are some pictures of three different versions of the Model 50 style magazine (that all look almost the same but will not interchange without modification) and their uses, the modified Savage magazine in the first picture will fit & reasonably function in all of the pictured rifles, including the Ranger 34-A.
