M&P 22 Compact - barrel nut

Long time no post-
Today I picked up one of the new M&P 22 Compact models (made by S&W in Springfield, MA, not by Walther) from my dealer. I got it on galleryofguns in a short window before they became allocated, at least that's what my dealer told me.

Anyway, I wanted to get the barrel nut off to see if it would take a Walther M&P 22 1/2"x28 adapter, but it didn't come with a wrench in the box. I modified a P22 wrench to fit (it is slightly larger) and was surprised that the nut didn't come off easily like the P22, PPQ22, SR22, Walther M&P22, etc.. I even tried to use a little heat, assuming the problem was threadlocker, but to no avail. I even managed to bend the wrench a bit.

At this point I'm thinking of using kroil, a cheater bar, and more extreme heat, but that could be a recipe that results in messing up a gun I haven't even shot yet.

Any tips? I can take pics if need be. Thanks.

Nothing in the manual.

Upon closer inspection and comparison to my Walther M&P 22, it looks like the new M&P compact has a differently shaped muzzle nut. While the nut/adapter on the Walther M&P22 is just a cylinder with the same diameter as the barrel (0.472"), the M&P compact's nut increases in diameter over its length, from 0.472" where it meets the barrel, to 0.500" at the muzzle.

Unless I can figure a way to get the nut off without breaking the gun, I think I'll wait for an aftermarket 1/2"x28 adapter to come out before I worry too much about it.

I let my gun smith take it off. The problem we found out then is that my dealer DID NOT have any barrel adapter that would fit. This included the Walther adapter. The barrel's threads are a different pitch. Now we just have to wait for a manufacturer to make a correct fitting barrel adapter.

It looks like Matt at Stalking Rhino Industries is the first and currently "only" person making threaded adapters for it. He does really good work. I was on NFAtalk.org today and he posted this.

"Hey guys!

Just finalized our thread adapters for the new S&W M&P22 Compact .22lr handgun.

Here's a picture of the product....(we snapped the pic before they were notched for the wrench so that feature isn't shown but will be on the delivered product).

On the left is the adapter built for the Silencerco Sparrow/Spectre o-ring profile, and on the right is the traditional adapter.

These adapters are offered in SS and the cost is $40 apiece delivered.

We are also offering a limited run of 25 of the Silencerco profiled adapters in titanium for $50 apiece delivered. These are first come first serve.

PM or Contact Shawn to purchase one!"

I'm not sure if I'm going to buy the pistol yet but now that the adapters are available I might consider it.

I just got my M&P 22Compact, I have same issue taking off the barrel nut, Don't use heat !!! Just put in the freezer for 20 min. it take off the barrel nut like piece of cake :D

I should have tried the freezer. I tried a modified P22 wrench. It bent the jaws.

I removed the barrel and grasped the thread protector in a barrel vice. I used a crescent wrench on the square chamber section, it popped free but that thing was on tight.

Just call Smith & Wesson customer service at (800) 331-0852. They will drop a barrel nut wrench for the M&P compact in the mail to you for free. The full size versions come with a wrench, but the compact version is made separately by Smith & Wesson and I guess that it is an oversight that a barrel wrench isn't included in the box.

OK, this ticks me off. I called Smith & Wesson Customer Service a few minutes ago, (800.331.0852 option 9, which is customer service) and told them that they had sent me a barrel nut wrench for my M&P 22 Compact back in early January FOR FREE, but that other readers of the Rimfire Central forum have reported that they have been told that S&W doesn't make such a wrench and I asked them what's the real story.
The lady I spoke with told me that S&W does make such a wrench, but sells it in a kit with a couple other small parts for $40.00! I said that the full size M&P 22s come with a wrench for free, and customers who purchase the compact version shouldn't have to pay anything to get one much less the outrageous price of $40.00. She then told me that S&W no longer includes a free wrench with the full size versions! (I didn't ask for the time frame when this change was made). (The wrench BTW is a cheap stamped item that couldn't cost more than a nickel to produce). I think this is a really poor decision on the part of S&W to foist such a money grubbing scheme on their customers. There are a lot of other manufacturers out there that value their customers and don't try to pick their pockets. S&W - this will be remembered! :gun4:

I ordered a 10mm bicycle wrench from ebay and ground it down to fit the muzzle nut. It came off with zero issues. The wrench also needed to be opened up a hair with a file, as it may be a little larger than 10mm. It was a Park Tool wrench and it was less than $5 delivered. I am very pleased with the compact and will hopefully get an Element II in about 8 months to put on the end.

I went ahead and got the wrench from EWK. I tried everything from freezing the barrel to vice grips...was worried about stripping the threads so bought the wrench. Expensive for a wrench, but worked in less than 5 seconds. Now I have a $25 wrench I have no plans to use again...

I know this hasn't been posted in a long time but I would like to add my experience with the thread cover from the MP22.

Not even Thor's hammer could take this off. I had stuck on a vice, pounded the crap out of the vice grips holding the thread cover, soaked the barrel over night in penetrating fluid, froze the barrel, heated the thread cover, filed the sides of the thread adapter to get a better hold, used "nutz off", etc.

I thought i was "possibly" doing something wrong. I took it to a local gunsmith who did the same thing in front of me. Pounded the crap out of the barrel, to no avail. After 30 minutes he told me to leave the pistol with him. 2 weeks later (the gunsmith told me in advance it would take at least a week due to side projects) he called me and told me he finally took the thread protector off. He did not say what he did but he kept saying "you really don't want to know" while shaking his head.

Picked up mine today, compact with a big wrench in the box....2x the length of the P22. Anyone have any idea how to remove the thread adaptor. Think P22 sorta looking thing. I've applied a lot of torque, don't care if it breaks the frame or not, I will sort that with S&W but I can't pull any harder and the thread adaptor isn't budging. No mention in the manual. These aren't reverse threaded are they? M1911

OK, I got it off. Propane on the top of the thread adaptor....I don't know....20 seconds or so. Not where the heat will warp the polymer grip/frame, whatever they call it. Smoking hot is how hot it got. Barrel is dirty from the factory. Trigger pull is rough but the sear breaks at 4 lb 12 oz. I should have all that sorter in short order. This is right out of the box...no fluff and buff, no cleaning or lubing....just right out of the box.

No evidence of thread locker or any kind of material.....sucker was just on tight. M1911

I called S&W today and was told they do make a wrench. It costs $12 plus shipping. I decided to see if I could make something that would work and found a golf divot tool works perfectly. It has to be a wide one so look for the biggest yuo can get.
