Impulse buys.

I'm not normally an impulse buyer, but I was in a shop today and saw something I've wanted for quite awhile. A Tikka Super Varmint Master in 22-250. I have 2 others, but I've always wanted one in 22-250. They had a pretty good discount on it so I bought it.
Who else does these impulse buys?

Now I have to tell the wife...

Ummmm…..well……me?

Howa 1500 in 6.5 CM. Because I had the AR, and there was a bolt action, with a $100 scope, for $400!

Or the $250 CZ ZOM 451, I’d never even heard of CZ. But it was a straight pull .22, so…yes!

A $100 Argentine Mauser, rebarreled to 7.62x39. Love that thing!😅

There were others, over the years.

Yes…. Sometimes a gun is so beautiful that even if its outside my designated calibers , I will buy it.
I try and limit myself primarily to rimfire,and 223 and 308 , but …
if something catches my eye, it might come home with me. Hence my 243 blr, and my 270 win brno;.
lI move them on to my god nephew , hes a huntef , and actually uses them.

Sometimes I buy things that seem like impulse buys but really aren't.

I come across something that is interesting to me, then I'll do some research and decide I want one, but only at the right price. It may take some time to run across the right deal on it. Therefore sometimes, from the outside it looks like an impulse buy but really the decision was made months or even years ago.

I also occasionally succumb to the regular type impulse. Sometimes things are too good of a deal, too desirable or just to good looking not to buy.

Four years ago I saw a Tikka Arctic in a Gunshop in Central Tennessee. Timing was bad and I didn’t get it. This past week I was in the same shop, which was under new ownership, and saw another one. I took it as a sign I shouldn’t ignore.

ps:

Been moving optics around to see what I might like to use on this. After watching YouTube videos of European’s hunting deer and pig with red dots on bolt actions, I’m thinking of going with this set up below. Took the Aimpoint Pro off an AR and removed the spacer to lower it.

Kind of reminds me of the M14’s in Black Hawk Down. Obviously doesn’t co-witness; but, it comes off in a second with one hand. I live on a heavily wooded hilly 71 acres up against the Cherokee NF. Most of my shots would be 100 yards or less.

Moving the Pro to the Tikka just prevented me from ordering a new ACRO or H2 in Orange from Aimpoint. I probably shouldn’t push my luck with the wife, LOL.

I use to shop pawn shops, gun shops, auctions, flea markets and garage sales always looking for something interesting at a good price.

Now my pile has grown and my retirement toy money is considerably less than when I worked. I seem to anguish over most purchases, even the good deals don’t appeal to me if it wasn’t on my radar.

I did do an impulse buy the other day, my 85 year old dad wanted to take a few of his recent purchases to the gun show, so I went along for the ride just to spend some time with him. He doesn’t seem to want to go anywhere by himself anymore.

Anyway I drove, paid the admission and visited with many vendors. You know how hard it is to buy better rifles, scopes and match grade rimfire stuff at the average gun show?

Anyway after an hour and a half of looking around I had found nothing of interest. Pretty normal these days. I was visiting with a guy who had bought some ammo from an estate. I found 2 20 round boxes of .500 S&W and a couple of 5 round boxes so 50 rounds total, the price was $20. Now I don’t own one, but a friend does. So I thought what to heck and carried them home.🤷‍♂️

I have tried to limit impulse buys in the last few years, I try to save for the things I have wanted for some time, instead of blowing it on random stuff I see. I have obtained most of it and mostly just have better optics and rimfire ammo on my radar these days.

I’m not really buying these days, and in fact yesterday in my continued effort to purge, I was in a gun store doing transfers for some guns I was selling. They just put out a pretty much mint 1945 Remington Rand 1911A1 that they had taken in on consignment that peeked my interest but wanted $1900 for it. That’s pretty much what top retail would be for that gun, but by the time you add 10 1/4% sales tax, dros fees, mandatory lock purchase and our 11% excise tax, that wound make that gun to be over $2400 out the door.😵‍💫 Luckily I was able to hold back on my “impulse”. Lol. One of the advantages (if you could call it that) to living where I do is that restrictions and cost definitely curb your “impulses“. It’s just too expensive to be impulsive.😳

A few weeks ago stopped at the LGS and asked to see a rifle leaning against the back wall of the shop.

Stevens 416 with the X-barrel scope blocks and mag.
Took a look at it it was in good shape but I have the Ranger version so I handed it back.

Walked outside and then said to myself ''Why NOT".

10 minutes later I walk out with it:cool:

Now I have one scoped and one with irons:yippee:

I will say my some of my impulse gun buys have become some of the most rewarding purchases I have ever done. That said there are several in the safe that my interest only lasted till the first range trip.

I find it easier to buy and harder to sell. Mostly laziness and rather keep them than be beat down on price.

I had been so good, for over 8 months....

My safe is over full and my backup safe is full, so I have been purging not used or under used rifles for about a year. Sold a 700 30-06 deer rifle to a kid that works for me and we went to the LGS to do the transfer yesterday. Well, don't you know there was a MasterPiece Arms custom shop BA in .223 sitting there for a price I couldn't refuse....geeze, I can't even sell one without replacing it within 10 mins.

If it is something you have wanted for a while and you buy it when you find it, it is not an impulse buy. It is good fortune you found what you had been wanting.

An impulse buy is when you find and buy something you didn't know you wanted. I have done that more than a few times.
I definitely agree with the possible exception of price.
There was a time when money was tight I would on rare occasion buy something I had held off from often having seen it and passed at even a better price and threw caution to the wind and bought it.
Not sure, maybe that would be a whim rather then an impulse.?.?
Not really sure the difference between the two 😕??

Ohh my, Yes! The Romanian or Slobovian .22 Training tent stake I purchased mail order. It shot pretty good, but wouldn't feed from the magazine. It made a fair single shot, if you didn't drop the round through the mag well, and it was definitely a bottom eject. So it sat, gathering dust. A co-worker wanted the magazine, but he turned down my generous offer of $35 for the magazine, and I'd throw in the rifle. I don't remember what finally happened to it, but I didn't lose any money when it went.

Most of my impulse buys were single-shot .22 rifles,,,
If I saw a nice one at the Evil Pawn Shop,,,
I bought it to clean up and gift away.

Several young boys and girls, kids of my friends,,,
Have received their first rifle this way.

The Evil Pawn Shop Guy got me a few times with K-frame S&W's,,,
I walked in his shop one day and before I even go to the cases,,,
He said: "Don't bother looking back there,,,
I have what you want right here.

Then he reached under the counter and pulled out,,,
An absolutely pristine 4" S&W Model 12,,,

My credit card was in my hands,,,
Before I knew what happened.

Dang him,,,
Dang him to all Hades!

Way back in the early '90s I was killing some time and stopped by a small pawn shop known for full gun cases. I spotted this neat looking S&W revolver ... I asked to see to it. 3" Model-13, heavy barrel, round butt, .357 mag. He says "$250.oo" ... I offer $225.oo ... he says "Deal".

I find out a short time later it's called the "FBI gun" ... the last revolver issued to FBI agents before going to autos. And it was discontinued ... the last one I saw on Gun Broker had a bid or $650.oo and still had several days to go.

And about a year ago, I'm at a LGS waiting on my friend to pick up his order when I see a 2" S&W Model-19 Carry Comp, .357 mag ... hey, I was already there ... I got it too.
So "impulse buys" on S&W .357s are my weakness .... what can I say, I like .357s

13 and 19 ... >>>
