I wish ruger made a "10/57"

Wouldn't it be pretty neat if Ruger made a 10/22 based rifle but was chambered in 5.7x28? I know they make the (butt) ugly Lc carbine, but meh. The 10/22 and 10/22 magnum look so much better. 5.7 ammo prices are coming down and its a potent little cartridge. I have a 5.7 pistol and I enjoy shooting it..... A rifle in this instead of 22 mag would be even better I think.

Get yourself an old Ruger 44 Magnum Carbine.
It's the Ruger 10/22 but in 44 Mag.
They didn't sell well and were discontinued after a few years
but are now regarded as classics.
IMHO 44 Magnum in a Rifle is a really good idea. But I never bought into it.
I bought a recent Henry Lever Action .357 Magnum, and am very happy with that.
It's a companion rifle to my Ruger Blackhawk .357.

Thats a really nice pair! I'm jealous!

The .44 mag 10/22 I am aware of. I used to want one until I saw one taken apart. No thanks. Plus what if I need replacement parts? I'd much rather a 5.7x28 version 10/22 anyways.

I prefer they bring back the 44 that preceded the 10/22 design.

Image pulled off the WWW. Deerfield with rotary magazine. Somewhat improved internally and better magazine over the tube feed earlier design generation. Not the tube feed wasever an issue as the whole gun design was changed. Still no parts for either. Not for plinking away cases of ammo at the club. A good brush gun for deer.

I owned a Deerfield 44 for more than long enough; it looked like a good rifle until I tried to actually work with it. Good riddance is all I can say. I've got four different 44Mag rifles (Ruger77, Marlin336, Remington788, RossiM92) and they are all so much better.

The 77/44 on the other hand; my very favorite hunting rifle ever. So much more useful than the Deerfield it's not even funny.

I'm very happy with my Henry .357 Mag rifle.
Henry builds a lovely, deadly thing. Good looking walnut, not too fancy as to seem prissy.
Not as butt-ugly as "tactical" weapons all are.
Well made steel parts, and excellent fit and finish. Good traditional iron sights, such that
putting a scope on it seems unnecessary. I put a 1.5 to 4.5 scope on mine.
And .357 Magnum in a rifle is a whole 'nother animal. With Hornady LeverEvolution bullets
it's got reach... (within reason)

That goes double for .44 Magnum I'm sure. I enjoy shooting .357s so I never really got
interested in the .44. With the .357 I can hit the target... which I think is more important
than almost any other concern. (that's why I like .22s too... *grins)

So to hell with any 1022 clone that shoots .44s... Just get yourself a Henry .44 magnum rifle
and see if you can hit the target offhand or from horseback. It hits a LOT harder than my .357 does.

If I just HAD to have something that would shoot .44s, I'd likely get the Henry Single Shot. With a .44, one hit is all you need.

Kestrel4k -

You are fortunate to have a 77/44. I don't think they are in production as I have not seen one in some time. I have wanted one with walnut stock and blue steel but they just don't seem to ever show up on Gallery of Guns or GraAGun, etc.

Kfxguy - A 10/22 design chambered in 5.7x28 might be an interesting configuration. Admittedly I've been looking at the 5.7x28 for several years but never found a pistol configuration to my liking along with the limited availability, and the $1/per round ammo cost has kept me at bay. Thread contributors proposed several other options . . . I would have probably bought a CZ 527 or 512 in 5.7x28 myself.

I've looked at Henry's in 357 & 44 mag from time to time but recently picked up the Homesteader 9mm carbine which might be another interesting configuration in 5.7x28.

The 10/22 itself is not suitable for a high pressure round like the 57. That is a non starter.

My take on 5.7x28 rilfe is a colossal waste of money over just buying a 5.56x45(223) There is no gain. Not a lighter gun, nothing more. A novelty squared. If a Ruger iwanted, they could make a mini-57 or ranch rifle version. Simple. If that is not black enough get an AR type carbine in 57. A 5.7 rifle is like a Win Model 70 in 30 carbine. Except in a world where 30 carbine ammo cost 10x the price of 308. There is no reason.

In a pistol, there is a reason, While crap in a rifle, in a pistol it offers high penetration, very high velocity and high magazine capacity. In addition to cool and different, the shooter actually gets something. There is no need to mindlessly blow off a lot of ammo. Aim, take some time and make a few 'good' shots. Or reload. Cost of ammo solved.

Just change to a 22 TCM. It is available in a handgun AND rifle. The cartridges are almost identical in size and from some videos I have watched comparing the two calibers it has more oomph when it hits. Ammo cost is about the same. One video was shooting a steel plate. The 5.7 dented it but the TCM punched right through.

I have the Ruger 5.7 pistol. There was something I did not like about the trigger, so I bought and installed a Tamdemkross one....still....don't like. I think it is an ergonomic problem, but I can live with it.

Yes, 2800FPS out of a handgun is awesome. Barely any kick and 20 round mags. Super accurate. I am going to buy the carbine as a travel companion to the pistol when on long van trips(always be prepared to walk home.... right?) The carbine will be great for the growing population of groundhogs I have here.
