I don't understand Barbers

I've always considered visiting a barber shop to be a necessary evil. I used to go every couple of weeks while in the military but since retiring I only go about once a month. That's about as long as I can stand having long hair on the back of my neck.

I visit a walk-in shop with 5 chairs. Sometimes all are busy and I don't mind waiting. Sometimes I'm the only one there. I've often thought that it must be tough to have your salary depend on the whim of a customer walking in. Must be great if you stay busy all day but not so great if no one comes in. Most seem to be independent contractors that pay a fee to work in the shop. Again, must be tough with none of the traditional benefit packages like sick leave and employer paid insurance.

Saturday I walked in to my local shop but was turned away as they were "full up/too busy". This was at 12:15 and their posted hours were 8:00-1:00. Other hours are 9:00-5:00 Tues thru Fri. I left, as I understand Their Shop Their Rules.

On reflection, what I don't understand is their reluctance to extend their already short workday to take care of a potential customer that is already there. Is being a Barber such a good occupation that you can just do that?

Anyone's experience with barbers that might enlighten me?

Unless you're in Mayberry I'd say make an appointment next time.

That's what I've been doing for 50 years :)

For seven years now, I've been making appointments. (y)

After my haircut, we set up my next appointment, usually 30 days or so.

Everything changed during Covid, and likely won’t ever be the same. We can’t go to the tax collectors office without an appointment , that started with Covid and it doesn’t look like it’s going to resume normal business practices. I never needed to make an appointment to get my hair cut till then and I’ve just continued to make them.

Dang Leenie, did your mom have to hang a pork chop around your neck to get the dog to play with you too? :p

Was at the dermatologist getting some barnacles frozen off in January and the little helper gal grabbed the nitrogen sprayer thingy and asked the PA which tip she wanted.

I said, "Oh honey, you're gonna need the Ogre Nozzle for this job."

They LAUGHED...and then she put on the Ogre Nozzle LOL

My wife is a hairdresser and has her own salon and while she’s not a barber, she does cut a lot of men’s hair. She is strictly by appointment only and has one appointment stacked up against the other.

I understand that a walk-in type place may be different, but she has a lot of people that try to call last minute to get in due to lack of planning on their end and she has to turn them away, and or try to reschedule them for another future date.

And at least in my wife’s case being a hairdresser is a very lucrative business so she can pick and choose what she wants to do and when she wants to do it, and more importantly who she wants to do it for! Just because you want them to work late past the posted shop hours doesn’t mean they want to work late for you, they may have lives beyond the job.

My wife cuts my hair when SHE decides it's time. No complaints and can't beat the price. Once, a good while ago, when
I was working (as always, out of town) I got a haircut close to my apartment. The gal that cut my hair was incredibly good
looking - I mean stunning. That's the good part... It was, hands down, the WORST haircut I have ever gotten - anywhere. It
took almost 2 months for it to grow back so I could get a good haircut. Very memorable for all the wrong reasons.

#1/2 all around. Once in a while I go on the back porch and do it myself. Then my best half checks it and gets the stragglers. Mostly I go to the chain when there are coupons. Hard to get a bad haircut when it's a #1/2.

My young barber is about 30 years old. He treats me right and we talk quite a bit.

I told him he gets this item when I'm gone.

When my spouse and I both worked I had a local barber cut my hair. When he closed, I went to a 'hair salon" which also did men's hair. The young lady talked me into getting a 'more youthful' cut. Ended up with spikes and a $$$ jar of hair stuff. Got home...ordered into the shower to wash 'that sh--t' out. Jar ($$$) went into the trash. Since then she alway has cut my hair with scissors and comb and does a doggone good job. We even bought one of those barber 'gowns' that wrap around you.

I started getting a bald spot and receding hairline a little over 20 years ago. Been shaving my head once a week since then. Saved a bunch of $ on haircuts in 20+ years.

The place I was going at the time had gorgeous women working there and free beer, so it was expensive. And booked solid.

My barber is appointments only (9:00 to 5:00, Tuesday through Saturday)and it seems he always has full schedule. He tells me he likes it that way, as he has a small shop so little room for walk-ins and he has complete control over his schedule. When I call for an appointment, I usually have to wait a couple or three days for an open slot. Works for me.

Only problem is I’d forget I had an appointment. I’d need text reminders…..old coots probably wouldn’t go for that. I’m not going to even mention my fine Flowbee again. Of course a flowbee is no good without a shop vac…….of course all men have a shop vac.

For as long as can I remember my wife has done mine. In high school she was a cosmetology graduate and has been licensed. She’ll cut hair for who ever wants. But she never persuad her own shop or working in one. She’s been in accounting and manages an office for a long time firm. She’s glad she never went that route.

Could be they have other jobs to go to, or other shops. I know a couple that go to retirement homes, funeral homes, etc. on a regular basis.

Barbers are a law onto themselves; then again they are the one wielding the cut-throat.

Being in mil most of my life, always had short hair (SOP for the job), now nearly an OAP so lacking in hair department so last visit to barber was about ten years ago. Still like short so I cut once a week, easy, have my own buzz machine so it’s a 2 cut all-over and beard trim.

On a serious note, good barbers can make serious money, over here it’s on average 30USD for a basic man’s cut, that’s basic, nothing fancy, they charge my 16yr old grandson 15USD. Barbers who own their own shops and if big enough will often lease/rent out one/two chairs per week, that’s guaranteed income even if the renters don’t get any clients that week.

Covid also had an influence and lots of barbers are appointment only now, those who still do walk-ins are fine but you may be waiting so best to have a the daily paper to read.

Best scenario is buy a buzzer and do it yourself or let the other half do it and cross your fingers.

Oh, barbers over here dont work on Mondays, without exception they all take Monday's off, shop cleaning/re-stocking/bookkeeping/etc. , ...................
