H&R M12 Rifle Matches???

Three of us RFCers here on the North Coast, (the shores of Lake Erie), each bought an M12 late last summer and plan to have friendly matches between us, and I was wondering if any of you other M12 owners (there are quite a few!) who would be interested in starting our own on-line monthly matches here on RFC. As you all know the M12 is too heavy to qualify for the custom class and is not all that competitive in the unlimited class. Heck, most of the unlimited boys have a barrel that cost more than my entire rig!!
The rules would be kept as simple as possible and thru discussion we can establish a set that is inclusive to most of us. They are also intended to keep out as much of the money factor as we can and focus more on the shooters ability.
We were thinking of something along these lines -

1) Rifle limited only to the H&R M12, 5200 or 5200 Sporter.
2) Two classes - scopes and iron sights
3) No weight limit unless you decide to just simply add weight
4) Drilling and tapping for scope bases allowed
5) No scope limit but must be of factory magnification
6) No time limit
7) Re-crowning and shortening the barrel will be allowed
8) No tuners
9) Trigger work is allowed providing configuration and all factory parts are retained except for springs.
10) No rests that have a "return to battery" feature are allowed.
11) No wind flags allowed but if others at the range have them - what can ya do??
12) Ammo restricted to $5/box before taxes or shipping.
13) Scope class target, the Official USBR target, must be used, shot at 50 yards. Targets can be ordered thru here, americtgt@aol.com
14) Iron sights class can be obtained here, http://personal.swayzee.com/jayb/rfc/index.html, and shot at 25 yards.

Only one target per month is to be shot for record. You can shoot as many targets as you like for practice but you must designate that one target for record before you begin shooting it. You can't shoot 100 targets for that month and pick the best one :D .

These rules are just something to start with, just suggestions. As people who would be interested in participating voice opinions they can be altered, added to or eliminated by popular vote. Hopefully we can establish a firm set by spring that fairly includes the most people. I think it would be a lot of fun to have a whole bunch of shooters participating this coming summer ;) .

So, don't be shy, what do you think???? Interested or not, lets hear from all the H&R M12, 5200 or 5200 Sporter people :t .

Well, I've been trying to get a M12 thing going at our local Assn. Sounds good to me with the exception of mods., keep the guns in 'as original' configuration. Trigger tunes and scope mods. OK but otherwise, keep it a prone rifle but shoot it from a bench. I was thinking of teams 'Winnie 52, Remy 40X and H&R M12! Not that team rifles would be exclusive to team names. Maybe after a SB Prone Match, change targets and bench shoot, email the results. Just my $.02!

Good point, I thought about that. But I know several guys have already made these mods trying to make the weight of the custom class and I'm trying to exclude as few shooters as possible. Quite possible their mods won't give them an unfair edge. Another after thought is having two classes, scopes and iron sights??? We need more input from more guys but I think we're off to a great start.
Tody, I agree it would be tough not to use wind flags seeing they are all over the place at your range. "Wittled" stocks are ok with me. Heck, sandpaper is cheap :D . I just want to keep the big money out of this.
I was also thinking of a side match where we can shoot for smallest group.Shoot at the top right target. Add some clicks to get the group away from you shot of record.

Sounds like a great idea. I'm not into competitive shooting, but would like to learn more about it and this seems like a great way to start. I do have a question, though. Are the "Official USBR" targets something we can print out, or do they have to be ordered from someone?

thanks,
azimuth

azimuth - You have to order the targets. Go to RFC's home page and find the thread "How To Order The Official USBR Targets " and read up. Ya might want to get a scoring guage too, only $4 and could add a couple points onto your score at times :D .

I like the idea. I've never shot competion, just got my rifle recently and since it came without sights would like some info from you old timers on sources & $ of the original aperture sights :) . I might just be better off going to a scope to begin with.

Looks like we're getting a respectable crowd here, we're gonna have a lot of fun.
Dick S, that's a great idea :t . I remember reading several threads where a bunch of guys were discussing what sights to put on their M12's.
I edited the rules, added the two classes and clarified the yardage for which we shoot. I know nothing about iron sights so if someone could comment on what yardage you guys usually shoot at I'd appreciate it.
Kastiron, are you planning to shoot a different target for each of the two matchs or use the same target for both? Just curious.

I was very glad to see this thread appear. I've been interested in friendly competition, but I've never been a fan of the "how much accuracy can you afford" type matches. I've neglected my M12 for a year or two, but this seems the perfect opportunity to get it out again.

Scopes at 50 yds is fine, and the USBR target is ok with a scope. I can't see a USBR target with iron sights at 25 yards, much less 50 yds. I have and use AutoCad and would be glad to generate a target just for M12 shooters if we can agree on dimensions. I'll post it on my FTP site so it can be downloaded and printed by any that are interested.

Jay, you are now officially in charge of the open sights target :D . Thanks. So all you guys with open sights give Jay a hand and send him a PM with your input. My advice is to generate a target that is not impossible to shoot but hard enough to keep the possibilities of generating a lot of ties. You hit the nail on the head about how much accuracy can you afford. Unfortunately, as with a lot of top level sports, expendsive equipment is a huge factor and if ya wanna play with the big boys - get out your checkbook. I heard the Nascar boys can burn up $40,000 a weekend just in tires.

I'm not too impressed with this, but it prints out ok......

This is scaled to the NRA 25 yd slow fire target. The wide black rings are for visibility only. The thin rings are for scoring. The outside diameter of the center black ring is .670" per NRA spec.

I drew this in AutoCad, but couldn't save it in anything but an autocad format. So, I printed it, measured it, and scanned it to a jpeg file, then posted it on my FTP site. I saved it from my FTP site and printed it without any scale to fit options, and it printed to size. I don't know why the image on the FTP site looks so shabby.

This is just a first offering. Any suggestions will be drawn up and posted. Then we can decide which one to use. Here's the link to the target on my FTP site.

I've set up a directory on the FTP site just for these targets. You can view any of the targets submitted at this link.

Submit target ideas by attachment to me via e-mail at jayb@swayzee.com

I'll update the FTP site with submitted targets by 6pm Indiana time daily.

I am planning to keep the M12 for the M12 match. I would rather contribute to getting this division off and running. Like you said, the unlimited gets a little like a money race.

Still need to get going on getting a scope to mount. Do we have the rules finalized yet, or close enough to get building?

If any of you need it, the original H&R M-12 manual with exploded drawing and parts list is available for download on my FTP site. Here's the link, and the M-12 info is about halfway down the page.

No cost....:t

Kastiron, I think you made a good choice. I was planning on shooting the unlimited class too even though I knew I was going to get my *** seriously kicked by a big checkbook. That’s why I thought of this. Sounds like this are going to work out well and I’m sure we’ll grow as word gets out more. No, the rules aren’t set yet. If all you plan to do is to drill and tap the receiver for scope bases you’ll be fine. Any scope is fine too, you just can’t spend a wad of money and pump up the optics to 45X.

Jay, good info :t . Where in the heck did you find that? I searched everywhere to find a detail pic of the trigger group.

I lucked into an original manual several years ago. It's in really good shape, but it's in 5x7 format, so I enlarged it and posted it. I've not seen another original manual, even on e-bay. Gun owners gotta share information, 'cause it may not be around after all us old farts are gone.

Wondering if does anyone ever do prone matches?

I may be in the minority, most of my time is spent prone with a 20X scope-I'm trying to get a perfect 100 10X on the NRA 50yd smallbore target. So far the best I did is 100 9X. Normally I can keep scores at 99 to 100 and 5X-6x.

The 50 yd benches at my club are not sturdy eneough for good benchrest shooting, I'd have to use the 100yd range benches. I'm tempted to build and donate a proper bench to the club for the 50yd range to see what the M12 and the 52D can really do.

How do you do that? I shoot prone NRA SB 'iron sights' and 200 is a possible (50/50/50/50) with 600 for a match.
