Old Sarg,
I keep about 48 to 50 of my pistols in custom fitted briefcases in an A/C room. The interier of the briefcases are filled with foam carpet backing that I salvage when people get new carpet. The foam is custom fittted around each pistol. I clean and lubricate them every 5 years whether they need it or not. Never had any rust and some have been there 20 years. I don't think the foam will hurt them.

I'd stay away from the WalMart/Target/craft store felt, especially the sticky back types. Most were made using an acid based process and the slight acid residue can destroy the bluing on a firearm. This is the cause of most 'rack rings' you see on guns that have sat at a shop for any time.

Try talking to a pool table sales shop about getting some pieces of quality pool or card table felt that wasn't made with an acid process.

The cork is also a great idea, but could be abrasive if the guns can slide when opening or closing the drawers.

I like the old sock idea, I have lots of them from Colorado that I don't think will get much use in Tennessee.
