First Appleseed Experience

Long Post-
Attended my first Appleseed Event in Charlotte this weekend. Really impressed with the structure, content, instruction and support. It was challenging, rewarding and really pushed me as a shooter to do better. Made me really reassess my habits, and gave me a good foundation for future shooting and personal challenges.
I ran a Marlin 795 with Tech Sights, DIP trigger and MCARBO spring kit. Rifle was excellent and performed nearly flawlessly (one jam) which unfortunately shredded that one AQT but that’s okay. I started shooting a 199 but then went down from there to a 197 then to a 160 (accidental safety issue) and then scratched my way up to a 201 and started to believe I had a chance! Final AQT resulted in a 216 and rifleman patch was achieved.

Long story short, great experience, great challenge, I had to work hard through those peeps to make it work. My big question is what’s next? I’d be interested in an Appleseed Pistol Shoot. Or coming back to rifle to see how I can continue to improve with a rimfire rifle? If I come back to rifle, I’d like to try one of my vintage military trainers with peeps, or a scoped rifle, or maybe a bolt action. Open to suggestions from rimfire central!

Congrats on your patch. Yeah, maybe try with a bolt gun. And maybe look for a Rimfire Sporter match in your area.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions! I looked around at some of the events scheduled and was excited to see the known distance event. I’ve always been interested in shooting beyond 100 yards. I know I’ve got room to grow, my shooting overall was fairly consistent, best groups at prone were 1/2”-3/4”. That’s very solid for me and some of my best shooting with peeps. I’d just like to be able to repeat that more consistently throughout my targets. As I might see that in 1-2 areas but then nowhere else as things would open up between 1”-1 1/2”.

I go to an appleseed every year (this spring will be our 4th) with my brother, not one of those years have i qualified on my first AQT. Im hoping to change that this year.
Iron sights is much more demanding on practice than other disciplines, put your rifle in a bi pod and see how it groups. Can you match those groups in a sling? At 50yards? At least thats my goal..

I’m really interested in the pistol program and the known Distance for sure. I need to see when they are and where they are hosted. The Charlotte gun and rifle club that hosted this one was literally 20 minutes down the road and so convenient!

In terms of another Appleseed I’d like to try again with an optic or a bolt action rifle to mix it up. There were a lot of folks with scopes there and many struggled at times when watching that reticle wiggle all over the target. While peeps were certainly not easy, I think the scope provides a different set of challenges. A bolt action maybe more than I’m ready to bite off but a manual action is always exciting to shoot especially on the clock.

"Perfection is the enemy of Good Enough" definitely applies to the Appleseed AQT (or any CoF which is a balances accuracy and time). A scope, particularly when set (unnecessarily so, btw) at high magnification, can exacerbate the issue.

FWIW, I shot Rifleman on my first outing with a bolt rifle with front and rear apertures. Working the bolt efficiently is important, but so is getting the shot off - when I saw the center of red through the front aperture*, the shot broke. No diddling, but good enough.

* Just make sure you're actually seeing what you need to see when the shot breaks ;)

Great job on getting your patch first event, that is rare!

Go do it again and strive for a higher score across all the AQTs. With iron sights the score for a Distinguished patch is 230 at the standard 25 meter events. 240 for scoped rifles, it’s harder than it seems in theory.

For added challenge do it with a bolt action, using rifleman’s cadence and NPOA it’s doable.

Again , great job. Bring someone else or even more people with you next time. Spread the experience.

Man I asked like five people (friends and family members) they all blew me off on coming. I was like where else are you going to get solid instruction and feedback, learn new skills and improve your shooting in such a short time for so little money?!?
