Early Model 69

Bought last week. I was disappointed when I got home. I have had a couple of 69A's over the years and when I looked at this old gun, I thought the safety lever was missing. I thought I would have to figure out and find some missing parts. Then I looked closer and realized there was no cut out in the stock for the safety and the stock seemed a little slimmer than the 69A's I have had. Wait! Why are Safe and Fire stamped into the rear of the bolt? And why is it so hard to close the bolt? Of course I came straight to RFC to do some research. Now I am smiling! This thing is a cock on close early first year non rebounding firing pin 69 and not a 69A. :)
Early Winchester Trade Mark butt plate. But on the subject of missing parts? Front hood is missing. Is there a part missing from the slot next to the trigger assembly?

Regards, Hushkaboom:
Thought about it for a while. Pulled the stock again and took a look under a bright light with a 20x loupe at the holding fixture for the spring. It may possibly be a tapered "plug" which clenches the spring when driven in. This makes sense.

My inner Bubba says if one spring came out, another will go back in. A more sensible element advises proceed with deliberation. Call it a clamp, is there any indication yours might loosen with a gently applied screwdriver?
