Do you regret buying your Springfield 2020?

I’m looking at buying one. I have no desire to compete with it, just enjoy backyard plinking. Dealer has new target models for $310. Should I go for it or run from it?

I bought one a little over a year ago - to see what I could get out of it. Out of the box budget ammo shot better than Springfield’s 2 inches at 50 yards guarantee, but not a lot better. I could get 1/2 inch CTC groups with top-quality premium ammo. One thing that was obvious was that the crown wasn’t uniform; after firing a few rounds it was easy to see that contact wasn’t consistent at the muzzle. The final solution was to remove the entire threaded portion and re-cut the crown. The other thing I noticed was that the trigger guard/magazine well/bedding block was a loose, sloppy fit in the stock so I bedded it permanently with Marine Tex. Now, with the action screws torqued to 35 inch pounds, it groups premium ammo around 5/16 inch. Not a half-minute rifle but not bad for, at the time, $375.

Since that purchase I’ve acquired an Anschutz 1710 HB with a GRS Hybrid stock and a Bergara B-14R. The Springfield doesn’t get much range time.

Frankly, there are probably better choices in that price range. I’m considering a 10/22 Light Varmint Wood/Stainless with a 20 inch barrel.

I received one free when I bought my Waypoint (amazing rifle!!!) last year and I really wanted to like it as a suppressor host small game package. I found it heavy, clunky and just poor to handle. Never shot it and down the road it went at a steal.

For 300 it should be as good a value as your typical Ruger 10/22 plinker. Seems ok at that price point as long as you know it is not a 'target' gun. It pretty hard to go wrong for 300. Odds ae more likely you be pleased than sorry for that cost. Its got to be worth 250 in resale. That is a $50 down side risk.

I have a Ruger American bolt action in this space. I think the Ruger American is a better gun (based on 2020 reviews) and the best choice on the market today for a guy like you. The Ruger is nice gun to hunt with too, for a guy like me. That was not your question. Its yes sure 300 what the heck. Or a no becasue you can do better.

Bought # 104 of 500 limited edition about the time they where first introduced.
AAA wood.
Had to shell out 1150$
Another 350$ Leupold 4x and mounts.
Had to have, couldn't leave the LGS without.
Not disappointed, seems that SA did everything right on the Sporter and said good enough on the Tupperware models.
Know of another one that's #287 with a Leupold 2-7 on it.
Very pretty wood and may have to buy it too.

People love their plastic and threaded bbls. One of the many many issue found was a pilot bushing left a ring ring inside the bore at the muzzle from the threading. Normally this is not how its done but with old machinery I can see how it would work out. Except working out on the machine does not translate to a good result. You dont have that.

The 1 of 1000 I looked over was not that fancy. Not at all. I actually suspect the LGS was pulling a fast one. You obviously did well to inspect in person. Except AAA wood is not that expensive. Its about $100 or 200 max, added material cost. At the source in Turkey has to be 100 max. I saw the exact same problem with the CZ Grand Finally, one beauty and one plain Jane. All in all that CZ was 10x the gun as the 1/1000 2020. I guess I can forgive any wood grading errors. But, do not ask me to pay $700 extra. Not even Miruko or Uberti will up charge like that and AFAIK Japan has to import the wood. Dont know how much Walnut grows in Italy. Not much I suspect.

The 2020 stock has kind of a weird pot belly look. It looks fine to me in a standard grade. I have the same nit pick with the stainless wood stock Ruger American. It also looks fine but not a platform for $700 up charge with deluxe walnut. The old Ruger 77 was thing of beauty. Why the ugly bottom on the 2020? Did good lines die with Bill Ruger? For my $1200 the lines better be right!

Bought the Target model. Shot OK for a magazine or two then fliers. Read about cutting the threads and re-crowning, pillars, bedding. I fiddled with the action bolts and settled on 25/20 (back/front) torque. 900 rounds through it still not dependable enough. 50 yards to targets next to each other, a dozen one inch bulls eyes. 100 rounds through the Springfield. 100 rounds through the Ruger American Rimfire. Not perfect with the Springfield, perfect with the Ruger. LGS gave me $150.00 of my money back when I sold it to him.

My nothin to write home about Ruger 10/22 Sporter will do pretty consistent 5/8-3/4" 5 shot groups at 50yd from a casual rest with Fed AM. Imo if that SF 2020 can do that it is only equal to one of the least accurate sporters out there no matter how cool it looks :(
