figures on my day off and itching to practice the wind chimes hasn't stopped since 3am constant measured crosswind 15+ with gust 30-40mph trash cans flying around grrr ........ what kinda setting you need for 40mph cross wind at 175 yd guys? LOL hmm probably have to shoot completely off target ..now that be some nice practice Bah

Image
almost 2pm - still going 15+ she wont quit pretty constant then it gets wild , had sheets of 1/2 plywood fly around 30ft lol grr

Well, we got high winds in the east, Nebraska, and here in Yuma Az. Must be windy all over the country. Here it is kickin about 15 to 20 with higher gusts. Kind of puts a crimp in shooting here today what with all the blowing dust and sand. Supposed to be beezy here tomorrow too.

i had a friend build a 100yd underground range , yes i know lol , his really serious about ballistics and making barrels , (6.8spc) my other favrt cal.... i seen 25-50yd basement built ranges also ....... would be cool to play in tho

Well, I finally had enough of the wind ruining my day off so I grabbed a rifle with a sling and aperture sights, a 1964 "Model 80" Sears & Roebuck - made by Marlin - (I know, this is the Savage board), grabbed one of my target stands with a 4 and 5 inch round gong hanging on it, some Fed Auto-Match Ammo, my ground mat, and headed to the Range.

I found myself a nice little spot along one of the tall side berms, set my gongs out at 50 yards, and shot prone. Wind wasn't so bad close to the ground. I took 20 shots at each gong (actually missed each gong only once), loaded my stuff back up and headed home feeling I conquered today's conditions - somewhat.

I couldn't shoot for "group" accuracy today, but I at least got to work on my prone shooting technique.:bthumb:

wind still going strong , i did more cleaning on the rifles and ammo sorting ...if this was the norm i prob woulda built a wind generator already.lol...help out during summer , like last year when my well pump line broke =800$ electric bill where the heck is the wind coming with no end  oh well another day

Temp is right, upper 60s today. BUT the wind is whippin at 25+ with up to 50 gusts. Dead across the range from 3 o-clock Have a new Marlin XT-22 my grandson will use to go against my Sav MK II. Mounted a 24X and will shoot it as is for right now before making Mods.

rain rain go away .......been raining since 9am about 12 hrs now , so decided to clean the fvsr well , go tru check everything etc soak the barrel with tetra and she breaks at 28oz now ...geesh wish my 64 trr was like that lol but , thats too low for a semi Imo .....my new 22lr ammo cases came in so i sorted some eleys trg & and cci std ......found a brick of aguila 60gr back of the safe , its not the best with 16 twist but , if i remember wright its fine till 75yd after that it tends to keyhole ....so ill sett up a dope card on it 25-75yd for the critters it hits hard ....i tend to recover allot of lead... what i shoot for ballistics & data you be surprised of the rounds i pull out of the back stops at 150+yds some are mint !! just have rifling on it LOL .....:bthumb: yea yea data nerds :t hope tommr will break for lil bit
since i cleaned i know least first 10-25 shots will be somewhat scattered :D

hope you guys had nicer weather then here ....feels like seattle LOL

btw- on my other Cal. sites ...we sometimes have friendly Honest - bi weekly practice shooting with targets you print out .... maybe the mods can start one on here ....usually you got 2wks to turn it in ....its fun , lil pressure dont hurt:bthumb: and sometimes if enought people go at it , there lil prizes box ammo etc.....did i say Honest shooting? ........if we get enought people im
wiling to part with a liberty dime or indian nickle to make it fun ....:t just a thought

Windy mond

well the rain finally stopped , but the wind took over again:mad: constant 9+mph frequent steady gust following 13-20mph.......didnt shoot over weekend , cleaned the rifle well i know the next 25+ rounds gonna be fouling , so dont expect much
i honestly didnt wan clean it but i was bored and soaked the barrel with tetra lube .......3days raining i was going stir crazy lol and we sposta have another 3days soon yay ...........well least i can practice with the wind , NOW BESIDES THE WIND MY TARGET BOARD WAS SWAYING BACK & FORTH least 2in LOL moving target

Image
wind was all over , i seen updrafts & down wind flags going 2 directions same time lol .....what you want anyone can shoot on a calm day:bthumb:,but the critters wont wait for the wind to die down for your shots right? lol

Image

175yd -cci std/sorted 10x- wind drift was least 2mills - with the crazy wind+moving target+cleaned barrel i was surprised .... had to cut it short 1 of the dogs had a seizure had to go to the vett asap .....he didnt make it :(

thnx dude, buddy had a good run almost 15yrs got a nice pet cemetery under a nice willow .....you will get there practice ,practice :bthumb: dont worry about others, each range time should be learning curve ,what i did good, what i did bad etc and try to work on it and this involves lots reading also
i hate to say it its like hollywood , its not what you know its who....i had good mentors pretty early on , after i started this hobby and came across good shooters that invested there time and knowledge only by showing up to the range as much or more then them ...i guess it showed effort so, more pointers came i picked up things fast also ......sure didnt get it from my old man lol he couldnt hit the side of a barn with a shotgun lol .....kinda sad cause he was a cop  .......then again i ran into LA swat practicing often and my Gf shot better then allot on paper she worked at a range in cali LOL good old times

example- i used to carry range finder around at work so lunch time , i can practice distance estimation etc........ distance, wind, ballistics 3 major keys ...i mostly shot centerfire and practice for that ...rimfire is sorta new to me , and i hate the fact i cant reload for it .....and tune the rifle for it bah

wasnt smart to wrk with 101 fever last nite, and 2hrs in the rain:t soaking but had to finish up a hvac project for a customer :bthumb: so i made it a long weekend since i know im gonna wrk my azz of next week already .......

nice 55deg outside slight winds 3-5mph but least its not continuous has gaps
still fouling the barrel in after cleaning it, had 10 shot after (above) so rule thumb imo least 20-35 before thing slowly settle in again and they are got to shoot at some plates and paper before going to the doc

--Cold bore shot at 175yd was dead on , at 3/4in sticky dot , i had to double look in the scope almost walked down to take a pict lol but i put few next to it , i ususally have least 5x targets up with different aim point left/top etc
example- in high winds 9-3 i aim at references at the edge so i can see how much the round is getting pushed, you cannot always rely on ballistic programs cause there plenty scenarios there no input for condition in there .....my back board is 4x7feet the if targets on top grouping good...its not the same towards the bottom cause of the height and brushes in the way of the wind...least what i found out....my targets are least 15-20ft in the air since im shooting down hill lol

Image
175yd -cci std /sorted- 3 shot groups good , 5 is better... 6 bah

Image

same info 8x grp - you can see the wind was from 9-3 oclock

its settling bck down after cleaning

sun is setting just walked bck up from the target , i grabbed my rifle about 20min ago and loaded a mag in with eley trg sorted , wind is updraft so i held 1 mill down ......after the 6x shot all i seen was a yellow spot at 175yd- since i shot it rushed under 3min didnt expect much , i didnt especially holding off and shooting , i did wait between pulses for the shots and had my mix songs going relaxing , my knee got hyper extended so hurts like a mother @#$ :bthumb:

ps- i got it off amazon link http://www.amazon.com/La-Crosse-Technology-EA-3010U-Anemometer/dp/B0002WZRKE/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1396568375&sr=8-5&keywords=wind+meter

Image
cold bore shot i talked about this morning at sticky dot

Image
175yd- 6x --eley trg sorted- holding 1 mill under for updraft

Image
after 6x im like ill quit and pack it before get totaly drk

Image
close up - dont think you aim at the same spot , you cant with moving wind , its a feeling where to place kinda mentalize &visualse the shot - or good guessing LOL

Zoltron.22,

Sorry about your best friend. Lost mine after 16 years. It is hard to take.

Been following your threads but I don't recall what you said you are sorting your ammo for. Is it weight, rim thickness or what?:t

#19 · (Edited)
thnx-- dude...i sort by both ....i would start by weight first , its boring but , front of tv you get a momentum going and prob can do 2boxes in 30min

i got a jewelry digital scale that does total 20 grams , its more precise in read out then scales that say go up to 100-400 ..EX 0.001g and its like 30$ on amazon :t
if sorting for weight only i do , lite, mid, heavy also if there too much wax that can effect read out ...sometimes there wax coating aint uniform since its drying bullet down

Had lil time ,before went to the park .The wind wasnt too bad but 2 crosswinds patterns 6-12 before the target and 3-9 around the target LOL . Yea ever tried keeping your eye on 2-4 flags same time and then shoot, hoping the wind didnt change before the slow lil .22 got there at 175yd .
On the upside i got a Coon with a snare trap i been practicing making. Good 10 lbs it was a leg snare so he was alive , didnt have the heart to blast him confined so i let him go. But i told him if i catch ya in my mild dots your fair game buddy he slowly walked away hissing :bthumb:

Image
175yd-eley trg 5x and couldnt leave the red dot alone lol /wind 6-9mph constant

Image

same info shot all under 10min , wife calling from the car lets go already lol the barrel isnt settle down yet from the OSD cleaning i did ,with the 3day raining never again

I use 6,8,12 in shoot n C , plus other brands what ever is on sale , i usually have 4x targets up same time on 3ftx3ft bck board , 2x6in 1x8in and 1x12in (for wind drift reference ) or steel plate, like today wind 3-9 then shift to 5-11 pushed rounds about 1.5mills off center of the 175yd zero setting , its not 1in red center its 20mm-0.7in

had few 15min to play around before doing yard work , nice day out besides the constant wind , after i went to clean up the target area, next door neighbor seen me walking up with targets came out with his marlin 22 also to plink lil bit ,he cleared 1.7acres of woods last year for cattle corn, left 2 nice trees on both sides perfect setup for tree stands lots critter&deer movement

Image
175yd eley trg sorted med, wind 8mph+ guessing (ned to find wifi wind meter that has 200yd distance reach to house lol)

Image
same info theres another goups about the same :t

whats up guys , very nice day today went to 82deg my oldest son turned 7 . Had a great time and i got to sneak off for 20min to practice lil bit . While everyone was occupied in the bouncer far side house :bthumb: bouncer best investment everr .
The winds where so so 8-10 pretty constant lots 3-9 then shifted 6-12 ...the deer where out grazing , dont yu love it when you stroll front of your targets or in your scope line  , but its almost turkey season nxt week so ill practice that soon .......

Image
175yd -cci std sorted - it did decent ,had 2 round sound very low prob low charge - wind 8+ when your sending a round and got lil window its shoot&rack&eye on wind flag&shoot&rack repeat and rinse lol you be surprised how fast the shoots taken , specially when the wifes yelling upstairs its "cake time" *this box cci std had allooot wax on it some all over down to the brass

Image
175yd -eley trg/sorted med -guess you can see it prefers eley as i do , wind 3-9 at 8mph (poa red dot) but for the price cci std is good also , (plink&hunt) Lgs just upted to 50$ a brick  BS went from 35-50 in few last months

loong day

last weeks 72hr work load was tiring , problem with those hrs is you cant rest yourself in 1 day after pushing mentally/physically for awhile . Today was lil better 8-7 :( - now i know how sleep deprivation feels like first hand
lol walked in from work & set down and fell asleep mind you i never sleep more then5-6hrs . at 6hrs like a robot i wake even if i took sleeping pills etc

today started out lil chilly at 28but even out around 47deg when i got home but lite winds 3-5 so i was determent to least shoot a group before hibernating like a bear :bthumb: last nite we got snow & hail for few hrs:confused:

it was like 7;20pm after i loaded the mag, and it was hard to focus on the shots. At one point i think i fell asleep looking tru the scope:eek: so i shot&racked trying to keep it steady :t -i had some vet sniper friends from Vietnam to Iraq some there training is brutal this prob how they felt on good day...now thinking of it, i never met a loud mouth ex sniper either :)...
