CZ 457 Premium

So much for reducing the inventory - :banghead: on my normal, Monday AM stop at the LGS, I found a CZ 457 Premium 22 LR in the previously owned section. Documented ANIB with original box and paperwork which turned out to be just that. This was a 2022 creation and stood up to the ANIB tag as there was not a handling mark on the stock, action, or barrel. The original box, packaging materials, and documentation were all intact. The wood is decent, but not what I would call a lotto winner. And based on what I had previously researched I was able to acquire at a price well under market value. Thus it was an easy decision to adopt one more CZ into the fold.

At the workbench, I pulled off the stock and did my normal inspection and cleaning of any addition:
  • I put a small piece of electrical tape on the recoil lug so it doesn't fall out of the stock.
  • Checked the barrel grub screws for 40 inch lbs.
  • Wiped down the stock with Renaissance wax.
  • Put a couple of swabs down the barrel which came out clean.
  • Gently filed down the serial number stamp on the bottom of the bolt.
  • Reassembled the action into the stock and tightened the action screws to 20 in lbs.
  • Check the barrel for free float - all looks good
  • Manually cycled some live rounds through the included steel mag - all works well
  • Performed a laser bore sight on the iron sights.
I’m still debating as to an optic or do some initial work with the installed sights.

That is an attractive rifle. I got an idea what is new retail and if I saw that LNIB at a really serious discount I would have my first 457. I have been held back by the premium price for a Premium rifle and they are never in my preferred 22mag. Or if they were the premium price might have been an issue. I try and only spend available cash and not get to deep into plastic debt. The more I look at that the more I am thinking a Premium could be my first 457. I have a small stash of scopes to choose from. Including some that would work for 22LR.

Nice work on the photos too. I guess CZ needs credit for the stock finish. For Premium dollars they will delete the mud. You did well assuming it was good price.

Beautiful rifle. I would like to put a front sight like that on my Lux that I use as my off hand rifle.

You can change the front sight blade on your rifle (assuming your rifle is a 457 Lux). CZ may not have them in stock at the moment though. If they have it, it might be labeled as for a 527 but it's the same sight insert. I had one and sent it to another member a few months ago when he was looking and CZ was out of stock.

I stopped by another LGS this morning, and they had a couple of 600s with that same stock design. I have a 457 Lux that was a lotto wood winner, and I admit it's sort of a safe queen. I recall the first five shots of CCI Std Vel went into the same hole when I was sighting in the optic at 50 yards. I guess I’ll have to match up the Lux & Premium in a head-to-head range session.

I’m guessing it’s the same stock dimension as the one on the 600 Lux, but neither were as nice as the one on my Premium. A blind squirrel stumbles on a nut thing ;) and yes the price of $557 plus tax influenced the decision quite a bit.

The eyes just are not reliable enough to enjoy what the rifle is capable of with iron sights, thus I ended up putting a scope on the Premium. I had a spare CZ rail, and this was the last of my Vortex Crossfire II 6-18 x 42 V-Brite Target Dot scope supply. It’s a bit higher than I like, but the cheek rest on the stock helps. My guess is this one will not see a lot of range time with all the other CZ 45x rifles … but I just couldn't pass on the price.

That will certainly give you a good view of the target. I get using up spare parts and doing some shooting with a new gun. Long term idea: Another way to go would be a something like a 4x, 1-4 or 1-5 with a straight tube that would go down low. This is a 1-5 just as an example of the size & form available. No picky rail needed. It would be a lot better suited to that stock. I got a lnib used VIII for so cheap I wont say for fear of not being believed. Lots of makers have offered scope like this and you could just put it on your watch list.
