CZ 457 MTR

I've been on Rimfire Central for a few months now. This is my first time creating a thread. I've had my CZ MTR since January and have been shooting it regularly 2-3 times a week and usually 150 rounds per session. I've gone through most of the growing pains finding what configuration of rests, torque settings, and ammo seem to work the best. (Currently using SK Rifle Match) The only change to the gun is a trigger spring bringing the pull down to around 11 ounces. Harris Bipod on Front and Protektor bag in the rear. I started shooting ARA Factory Cards a couple weeks ago and mostly shooting around a 2100 to 2200 average with occasionally getting 2300 to 2450 with an x or two here and there. First real competition this Sunday.
So that is where I am at. Now I have a question for the group since I can't get a clear answer from the manufacturer. I sent this to CZ 2 weeks ago: "I own a CZ 457 Varmint MTR. I do not use an additional cheek rest. I've just started shooting benchrest and will be keeping the rifle stock and shooting factory class when I start competing. I've noticed that where my cheek contacts the stock, facial oils are starting to turn that contact area darker. I'd like to find out what products you use to finish your Walnut rifle stocks so that at some point I can re-apply more of the same to keep the finish somewhat uniform."
After a couple days I received a reply from CZ stating they only make the action and Boyds makes the Stock. Please contact Boyds.
I thought this strange, but OK. I contacted Boyds. They said they do not make Walnut stocks for CZ MTR's, please contact CZ. I then relayed that to CZ and asked for clarification...crickets.
Does anyone know what kind of finish is on the Turkish Walnut MTR Stocks?
Sorry for the long intro.

Great question....I had the same one. Googled the heck out of it and kept getting: 'Oil like finish'.
Looking at the 'roughness' or grain porosity I would guess it was just sanded down and oiled.
Given that assumption on my part, I have been applying coats of Renaissance Wax (other products might work but I had this on hand). I am up to about 6 or 7 layers applied over consecutive days and the pores are starting to fill in and the overall appearance is 'smoother'. I will give it another 6+/- coats just to protect the wood. Since museums use this wax to protect metal and wood I figure it should be good enough for us shooters.

You might have to lightly sand the top of the stock to remove the staining then start waxing it.

FWIW, ARA will penalize you (move you from Factory to Unlimited) if you paint the stock even with a clear lacquer or varnish. I have asked. They may re-consider that position in 2026 rule changes.

Thank you, The Renaissance Wax sounds good. My goal was to keep it same as the factory, but when the factory won't support your inquiry then we haven't limited choices. I'm actually surprised by CZ's lack of assistance. I thought they would be more supportive.
