To the members-

I started moderating almost 12 years ago, because RFC is the best forum on the net, IMHO.

I love this place.

I love it in spite of the fact that
there’s never a shortage of armchair quarterbacks and visionaries employing their myopic hindsight here, who don’t have a clue what it’s like to try to be fair to a community that is constantly bickering & squabbling, breaking simple rules, arguing about it, and acting thin skinned and entitled, just like school children. If any of you had half a clue what a typical day on RFC is like for me & my team, you’d lose the judgmental attitudes and become part of the solution, rather than perpetuate the problems.
But that’s not society today.

I’m very proud of the moderators who work so hard to be fair & patient, doing the job of keeping this place running the way Indy intended- 24/7, 365.

They do a yeoman’s job, every day, without any pay at all.

To my team- THANK YOU ALL, for your steadfast commitment, hard work, and fairness.

It’s amazing to me how often people here take the time to complain, yet how seldom they take the time to thank them for the work they do, for all of you.
Folks- every once in a while, take the time to thank a moderator. They’re only human, they do a very thankless job for all of you.

I truly love this community-

But I’ve come to realize that’s not set in stone.

I always promised myself-
when it stops being fun, I would take a step back and reassess.

It has definitely reached the time that I take a little break from all of this-

I’ll be around, lurking & learning like I used to do, for a little while.

I just need a little time to “reset”.

Please direct all problems, questions & concerns to anyone but me, for at least the next week.

Sincerely,
DrGunner

I have found the mods & admins here to be more helpful, friendly, and even handed than any of the other gun sites I visit. This is in spite of being slapped with infraction points and even temporary bans. With 20/20 hindsight, I've deserved having posts deleted and other things to keep RFC a peaceful and pleasant place to visit. I'm sure I don't say it often enough, but...

THANK YOU to Dr.G and to all of the mods who work hard to deal with all of us "entitled" people who are "always right".

To all the mods. Not angry at you all for doing your job correctly. I just got sick of everything being turned into p word trash. Let’s all get back to just talking shooting. DRGunner you all are awesome folks. go Fishing, (I did) . I so understand the frustrations you all go thru. I’ve been to the principles office myself for straying, but I learned a lesson. God Bless you and the rest of the folks here.

"Folks- every once in a while, take the time to thank a moderator. They’re only human, they do a very thankless job for all of you."

Part of the problem IMHO is that most (some, a few?) of us don't really understand the full extent of what moderators do. I personally only have a vague understanding.

Maybe we should be educated.

I only just joined this fine group a few days ago and already, after reading many varied threads, it’s obvious this is a thoughtful, well and carefully moderated forum. So, although I haven't gotten to know you and your team yet, I say, “great work and thank you”. It’s a (usually) thankless job and I for one appreciate all the hours days and months folks like you put in to keep great, conversational and educational forums alive and running.

Cheers Dr.

Hate to see you go, but I fully understand why. I was a mod on three R/C forums for a while and an admin on one. Had to give it up after a couple of years.

Folks, if you haven't been behind the scene on a forum you have no idea what a pain it can be. I wont rehash what Dr. said but if anything he understated the problems a mod has to deal with.

Best wishes and peace to you Dr. You will be missed.

I know I’m new here and don’t have anything to put in the pit on experience about rimfire rifles/pistols, but I have left other forums in the past due to the conduct of its members. I haven’t encountered any of that here. The one time I remotely had an issue it was figured out quickly, without the staff getting involved, that it was just a misunderstanding and I have no animosity towards that member. Never once was there anything anywhere near what I have seen/dealt with elsewhere. That alone is a testament to the staff keeping things inline for long enough that members take care of things the right way.

I also know what the staff have to go through behind the scenes. It’s not easy for them. Sometimes regular members have trouble being able to separate the fact that a person can be just a member or staff or both. It can be stressful and angering at times for staff members, but they are expected to be the face of the forum for absolutely nothing in return except a thank you and hopefully a nice forum to be on. They also do a lot to protect the forum from spammers and scammers that regular members will never know about.

@DrGunner I wish you happy and peaceful times on your break. It’s important sometimes to step back a little, breathe and reset.

I appreciate this forum because it is civil. profanity free and populated by a membership that is generally well informed and knowledgeable about the topics they address. The civility and lack of profanity is attributable to the membership and also, the moderators. The moderators somehow control the chaos.

On one occasion I started a thread which was subsequently deleted and I got a bit angry until one of the moderators (I think it was Lt. Crunch but maybe not) explained that it wasn't what I posted but rather, the posts of others which had crossed the line. I understood that.

As I have said before, being a Moderator is not a job which I would want. Too many grumpy old geezers like me to deal with.

Dr thank you what you and the other moderators do. All of us at one time or another ask ourselves why we are doing something. I appreciate your candor and hope you resolve in your mind what is best for you. Personally I would like to see you continue in the role but understand your feelings .
