Full size or compact for squirrel hunting? Lets see your squirrel getter?

Been looking at Mark II FV-SR or CZ SR. Kinda getting tired of dragging a 24” with a 4-12 around the woods. Looking at a shorter rifle and a 2-7 or 3-9.

Well I'm sorry to hear you have no hundred squirrels for years I don't know your reasons but if you are able to and your health is allowable please consider getting back out and taking a walk this year and a great outdoors joins up and coming tomorrow and remember your youth it is a wonderful feeling 🙏🏻

Last time I hunted squirrels I was using a Remington 581-s with a Bushnell Sportview 3-9. It was deadly accurate with Remington Standard Velocity. I have since passed the gun down to my daughter, so I can't post a picture. It's a pretty plain looking rifle, but very accurate, punching way above its price class. At 7.5 ish pounds with scope, it was light enough to carry, and heavy enough to hold steady. Just about perfect for me.

I like the 9422. but mine is a 9422M. Since I'm not a magnum fan mine never goes out. The 1961 Marlin 39A Mountie is however a frequent companion, and is the 'go to' squirrel getter. My 1957 built standard 39A is a little bit heavier so it doesn't go out as often. I'm a "lefty" so I prefer a lever gun or a falling-block single-shot like the 1885 Winchester by Miroku. The 1885 is just too beautiful to go stomping around the woods with it. The Uberti 1873 Winchester carbine in .45LC just sits in the safe because I don't like chasing the brass and the effort to reload cartridges for it.

For me I prefer smaller. I’ve taken somewhere between 2500-3000 invasive squirrels with maruader .22 airgun pistol. So amount of energy is not the limiting factor (but I’m not shooting 100 yards with that airgun so keep that in mind).

As long as the gun is accurate, you have an optic, and it’s shoulder stabilized that’s all you need. The smallest I would go is my buckmark with universal brace.

Again if shooting 100 yards then the benefits of longer guns, 22 mag etc would be helpful.

buckmark with removable universal brace. Brace is not attached to gun (held on by your grip) so can be carried in 2 pieces until needed if desired for smaller size or holster carry.

😭😭😭😭😭😭
What a beautiful beautiful piece .
I've been on a search and trying to build such a firearm as you have here except I would look to scope it .
They are so hard to find I cannot put my hands on one to save my life in the form I want as we in Pennsylvania are not allowed to hunt squirrels with semi auto pistols but the rifle version of this with the 16 inch barrel is considered not a pistol here in Pennsylvania and i can not find a brand new inbox or close to it anywhere as it is discontinued for many years now lucky you and great build 🎉

I’ve been a long time squirrel hunter and I have two very accurate CZ 452 .22lr I like to use but when it comes to light weight I like my 10/22.
*16” TacSol X-ring aluminum barrel
*Magpul X22 stock
*Drop in Kidd trigger
*Vortex 4-16x42
The scope is a little heavy but my old eyes prefer the extra zoomies! She doesn’t care for “quiter” ammo but she loves CCI-MM-HP’s!

Is your tripod the standing or kneeling? I have the kneeling one and thought about the standing one but worried it wouldn’t be stable enough.

My first big gun, little gun squirrel getters was back in 74'
I was 10 years old and bought a Savage Westpoint 487T with my paper route money, later that year Mr. & Mrs Claus (mom & dad) gifted me a H&R Sportsman model 999 revolver
I still have both firearms today, 51 years later.

I refinished the 487T stock when I was around 20?

Shot a lot of squirrels and rabbits with this H&R

Last squirrel hunting I did seriously was back around 2010
Carried my Ruger 1022T and my Ruger MKII Competition Target, they're a head shooting duo! :p haha

I like mine short and weigh about 7-8 llbs, have 2 rifle's that I have modified for blind hunting
and do well in the woods.
Like inexpensive but good dependable accurate and magazine feed and no magazine's hanging down , wood don't care will be camo painted and must be comfy to shoulder or that will be fixed.
Nice hunting triggers like 2-3 lb pulls.
Here are my two carbine rifles and both are interchangeable.
Scopes I like BSA 2-7X32mm AO air rifle or Clearidge 3-9X32MM AO.
CZ 452 Scout about 300 bucks and a 10/22 and about 400 bucks not including the scopes.

Re tripod. Anyone use gimbal mounts? This mount is $60 (copy of $600 wimberly mount). I bought it for bird in flight photography but it works great for any gun with a arca Swiss plate attached. Free movement in any direction such as for shooting sage rats from a fixed position. Remains stable no matter which way gun is pointing. Turn knobs to lock it down. I just velcroed the plate on for this test with an armscor .22. Full setup including plate and used camera tripod was roughly $100 (used camera tripods are cheap- it’s aluminum not carbon fiber. Gimbal mount works with any tripod with standard camera screw mount. Much, much, better than a ball mount. Probably not as stable as some type of solid mount though would guess.
