There is a tremendous amount of knowledge in the forum on the subject, but no BB specific thread on optics... perhaps we could get a discussion going i.e budget options, performance, mounting issues? I know there is an optics forum, but perhaps one in here would be worthwhile?

I've got a Simmons 22 Mag on mine, but that's going to change. I'm thinking about a Mueller (sp?) and am planning on doing some prone matches with it.

Well,

I know that people flame the cheap scopes but I have a Leapers Side focus 3-12x44 scope and couldn't be happier. Actually I have three of them and couldn't ask for more out of a scope.

If dreams came true and my business was off the ground then I'd have better optics but my reality isn't so fortunate.:)

Anyhoo,

as for the rings I use ARMS Throw levers. They are guaranteed to hold zero 100% of the time no matter how many time you remove and remount them. I was going to buy another set of Leupold QRW rings (have three already and am pleased) but I don't have the time to run up to the farm every time I remount my scope...even if it is off by one or two clicks.;)

As all BB owners know, the Achilles (Sp?) heel is the need to remove the scope so you can punch out the pin that holds in the bolt.

Brunhilda

has a a Barska 6-24x42 with the mil-dots riding right now. mounted in millett low rings on a bedded base. it is a proven scope that was on my .17hmr so i dont expect any problems. if the Mueller apv ever gets here i might swap it on there depending on how fine the x-hairs are. keep :snipersmi

I agree, if what you mean by "do everything" is "sit on top of the rifle" and "are long and tubular of shape".
Sure do and then some.:t

I just want to know what my Leupold is supposed to do that is better than my Leapers, or any other cheap scope for that matter?

Make breakfast, wash the car and/or change the baby's diapers? Could someone clear this up for me? Seriously, because all I know is the one thing it did do that the other didn't is cost me over $200.00.

22collector,

I'm not sure about the prices on the lit reticle models. They came out with them several months after I bought mine.

You want serious? I am as serious as a heart attack when I say this: If you genuinely cannot tell the difference between a Leapers product and a Leupold, BY ALL MEANS continue to buy the Leapers. I would do so, also, if I were in that position.

Yeah my Leupold is clear and bright but the Leapers is as well. Clarity and Brightness is a given...it's a Leupold compared to a Chinese import.

I could see your mindless point if the cheap scope view looked like someone smeared Vaseline on the lenses but it doesn't. It's bright and clear and I can see through it just as I can see through the Leupold. Granted it's not AS bright but it is bright and just as clear edge to edge.

However, I just want to know why I should be buying only Leupold, or any other high dollar scope, from this day forward? What does it do that my, or any other cheap scope, doesn't? It's an honest question that deserves an honest answer. Apparently there is no honest answer unless it involves a heart attack and questioning one's eyesight.

When I look through both scopes, I see the target that's about to get shot. When I turn the windage and/or elevation knobs, on both scopes, the cross hairs move ÂĽ" @ 100yds per click. When I mount the spot light to remove possums and raccoons from the farm I can see the critters just as clear whether it's the Leupold or Cheap scopes.

What does the Leupold do that is SOOOO much better than cheap scopes that you and the rest of the Leupold Police need to act like we question your sexual preference, religion or make fun of your momma when we say that the cheap scopes do what the expensive scopes do?

Granted…they would probably desintigrate if mounted on a .50bmg rifle but we are talking .22's here.

Does Leupold models allow me to look through walls? How about around corners? No? If that's not it maybe Leupold makes guns shoot more accurately? If so…how? Does it have an anti barrel vibration device built in?

Zero is zero unless I missed something along the way.If your's does all this then I need to send mine back because it's defective.

What does it do that cheap scopes don't? I see the targets when I look through them both. I can adjust the zero to allow for wind and bullet drop with both if I want to. They both focus very easily.

I know…they will make all the groundhogs look like beautiful Unicorns and the Starlings I shoot look like little Fairies. Ahhh, that's so sweet.

My eyes are fine. I don't wear glasses or contact lenses and I don't need to spend $200, $500 or $1200 on a scope to be able to see the groundhog I'm about to put a bullet in. Maybe that's it, you and the other's that bash cheap scopes have such bad eyesight that you need to spend the extra money on more expensive scopes just to get that little bit of extra clarity and brightness to see all the Beautiful Unicorns and fairies.

I for one am a convert since the Leupold Police have shown up. However, the rest of the RFC members that have cheap scopes ---SheikYerBooti, Charlotte, RFC, nemohunter, 22collector, etc...still need to know that they will be able to shoot more accurately, look through walls, peek around corners and most of all....see Unicorns and Fairies.

You go get the Leupold-mobile warmed up OldSwede and I'll go get the Mr. Microphone. It's time that we start spreading the gospel.

Good golly, man, who wound you up? I think you had better go back and re- read my post. it said:

"If you genuinely cannot tell the difference between a Leapers product and a Leupold, BY ALL MEANS continue to buy the Leapers. I would do so, also, if I were in that position."

- and that is ALL that it said. I NEVER said that you should be buying only Leupold - only the contrary. I said that if I were you - and couldn't tell the difference, I, too would be buying the Leapers. Don't put words in my mouth that I didn't say, please. If you are so insecure that you need to interpret what I said as something I didn't say, that is 100% your problem.

As it happens, I most certainly CAN tell the difference. Maybe it's MY poor eyesight. Maybe it's my 45 years of shooting. I don't honestly know. I do in fact know that to me there is a BIG difference, and I have to spend the extra money for fine optics, otherwise I get a headache and blurry vision after awhile. If you genuinely cannot tell the difference why spend the money? There, I said it again. Is your manhood questioned by that? Guess that's entirely up to you.

Swede,

it takes a true man to apologize and I am sorry if I blew it out of proportion.

Yeah, as you can tell I am uptight. It's all due to this Russian ammo situation and some products that are getting screwed around in testing.

I can see the difference and many others can EASILY. I just had to vent and this was the nearest target.

It's my fault and I take full responsibility. It's just that the pressure of everything came to a boil at the wrong time and I was working on WINWORD.

No hard feelings.

Oh and by the way....I have a New Leupold on order.;)

i have a made in japan sightron, i have a simmons 44mag phillipino scope, ive had cheaper chineese scopes too.

that sightron is leagues above anything ive looked through, even a bushnell 4200. my next scope will be a sightron, as they are more affordable than leupold:)

ps: i have 20/15 vision...thats BETTER than perfect :D in fact it may be 20/10 but the eye doctor said i was boring and didnt need to test any further ;)

going from my sightron to my 44mag is like going from looking through a 3" drainage pipe to looking through a 12 gauge shotgun bore... yep i can still see things fine, but id prefer looking through the sightron.

maybe leapers has some secret glass? ;)

dwight,
oh believe me, i do treasure it. I also do everything i can to keep them that way...safety glasses, GOOD sunglasses (nike)...but my mom and dad have both had glasses since they were children, so i figure its only time before i have them too...i also have great hearing, but that doesnt degrade as quickly as vision, IF you use protection, and i do... :)

Mueller

I have a Mueller .. they are NOT cheap and are reasonably priced. All of you should have a close look. Great scopes.

As for mounting issues .. I am curious to know what everyone has done to mount their scopes? My BB had the original dovetail on it, designed for a true biathlon aperture sight. The dovetail is probably 7.5 or 8 mm. Nothing I know of fits it. I just changed it to a Weaver base. Is that basically what all of you with optics did?

:D
