B14-R owners - Original Stock or Aftermarket Stock/Chassis

I'm curious how many B14-R owners kept the original stock versus moving to an aftermarket stock or chassis (and which one). Or, how many went with the barreled action and aftermarket chassis. Would also like to hear why you did what you did and if you're happy with your decision.

I shot my new B14r steel barrel in its HMR stock for the first time this morning. I was also shooting my Tikka T1X in an Oryx chassis. I was sighting them both in at 25 and 50 yards. I just switched scopes on the T1x and figured I might as well do a comparison between the Tikka and Bergara. Altho I really enjoy the Oryx, I was hoping I'd like the Bergara HMR stock enough that I wouldn't feel the need to immediately buy a chassis. Well, my hopes were realized - the stock is just fine. It's comfortable and solid and does what it's meant to do. I won't be running out to buy a chassis for the B14r and I'm not disappointed I didn't buy just an action plus a chassis. Maybe I'm nuts, but I kinda like the gray/black speckled look too 🤷🏻‍♂️ Oh, and both guns shot equally as well, with maybe the Bergara doing a little bit better. I was shooting Norma TAC which is the only half way decent ammo I can get in my neck of the woods (can't mail order any). I was happy my B14r seems to like it just as well as my Tikka. Gonna try to make time to get back out tomorrow and compare them at a 100 yards.

I find no fault with the factory stock other than.........................yawnnnnnnnnnnnn. I have considered getting a ceracote finish on it because it's just a little too gereric. Needs some pizazz! As my wife likes to remind me............men accessorize more than women. And I reply," only when it's necessary, love". That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

I have a B14R carbon in the original stock and like it allot for the informal shooting I do with it. Ergonomics are good , weight is reasonable and it suits shooting from a variety of positions. IMHO, it gives up nothing in the accuracy department. All I've done is add a short picatinny rail adaptor to the front stud. It's a nice looking and feeling stock (with a great mini chassis) I have another B14R (steel) that was set up for bench and positional shooting with competition in mind. I have this one in a KRG Bravo so as to more easily adapt it to ARCA based accessories. That set-up seems twice as heavy than the Carbon rifle although I don't think it is. FWIW, I tried other chassis and didn't care for them. I just didn't like the "all metal" feel and sharp edges for the most part. (I'm building a Vudoo now, it will go into a KYG Xray) I like the shape and feel of the KRG products and the fact that they are very tailorable.

As for buying a rifle vs barreled action, I chose to buy the full rifle both times. IMHO, this has the advantages of a) allowing me to try the factory HMR stock for my intended use before dropping big $ into a "better" chassis. b) is pretty much a wash pricewise since I can always sell the factory stock and bottom metal to make up the difference in cost over the barreled action alone.

Here is my B14R in KRG.

Thanks for all of the input! I ended up going barreled action in an MDT XRS stock and have ordered the enclosed forend with the built in ARCA rail. Like a lot of you said, the metal chassis didn‘t appeal to me as much. The XRS seemed to have the benefits of both a chassis and a stock.
Haven‘t shot it yet. I’m waiting on new rings. The scope seems to sit a bit high with medium so I have some low coming soon.

I have a B14R steel barrel in the OE stock, and then picked up a B14R Carbon barreled action. It went in an MDT LSS XL chassis. The barreled action was then sent on its way as I like the steel barrel better, but I kept the MDT chassis. At this point I have not moved the steel barrel over, but I am debating moving it over to an HS Precision stock I have that I know fits me well, moving it to the chassis, or just letting it ride in the HMR stock for a while longer.

I have no issues with the HMR, as a whole, and think its a great option - but sometimes you just gotta find what seems to work best with what you are using the rifle for.

I didn’t have a problem with the factory stock on my B14r but got a fantastic deal on a MDT XRS chassis during their Black Friday sale, so I made the switch. I like it because it is more ergonomic and has interchangeable grip panels. I was able to sell my factory stock for what I paid for my chassis so it was a win-win deal for me.

Nothing wrong with the factory stock, but I had a McMillan M4 Stock for a Remington 700 SA in my shop that has been sitting the for years. So, I ordered a Bergara barreled action and bedded it into the McMillan. I also changed the trigger to a Timney, which again I had laying around. Now the rifle feels like one of my full size center fire rifles and it shoots very well with SK Rifle match.
