August 2024 CZ/BRNO 25/50 Yard Scoped On Line Benchrest Match: RESULTS

1.5K views 23 replies 10 participants last post by  Dr_Statis

The August match thread is going up a bit early because I'm going to be wrapped around the axle next week moving dwellings. It's the honor system, as usual, that we won't have any "Sooners."

Be safe, shoot straight, stay cool and have fun.

Guidelines, same as July:

CZ or BRNO scoped sporters, in a factory configuration - less than or equal to 9.0 lbs when weighed with the magazine removed. The CZ 452, 453, 455, and 457 Varmint models should qualify unless your glass and rings are more than 2 pounds. Pro Varmint, At One, and Varmint MTR models may be tough to get in under the weight limit.

Any safe trigger. Maximum magnification of 9x on the scope, for 25 yard targets. (Those with variable scopes set them to 9x or lower).

No aftermarket barrels or stocks - only CZ's original stocks and barrels. It is also prohibited to swap the stocks or barrels of different CZ models such as taking the stock from a Varmint and putting it on a Trainer. If one has damaged his/her original CZ stock or barrel, they may order the same exact factory replacement part for their specific model. There are other BR games on RFC for dramatically altered rifles. We are trying to encourage competition with unmodified or minimally modified scoped CZ sporters. As to custom stock bedding performed on a factory stock, no compound-bedding allowed, pillared or non, and plain pillar bedding is prohibited as well.

Target is the USBR Target (The Green Monster)

22 long rifle

Fired from a benchrest using separate front and rear support and a bi-pod is fine if the shooter prefers. Gun vices and one piece rests are not allowed.

New for this year:
Option 1: Distance to target is 25 yards, all guidelines above apply.
Option 2: Distance to target is 50 yards, all guidelines above apply except scope magnification is unlimited.

Time limit - 1 hour for unlimited sighters and the 25 rounds for score

You can shoot on an indoor range if it is your only option, but please report that fact in your post.

You can post multiple targets if each is fired with a different CZ. For example, a shooter could post one with his/her CZ Varmint and another with his/her CZ American and a third with a scoped Ultra Lux. You may shoot up to FOUR targets with EACH rifle AT EACH DISTANCE and post the highest score fired with each one. Post up any target you shoot if you choose so we can all praise you for your perseverance and improvements. Just don't forget to go back and mark only your best as "Official Entry" before the end of the month.

Post a pic of your target (required) and the equipment you used (recommended) in this thread by July 31, 2024.

Honor system, and we couldn't ask for a more honorable bunch.

Wind flags are fine.

Use this format to post your score(s)

How to score:

A scoring board is helpful, as is a scoring plug (or gauge). An internet search on scoring gauge should reveal multiple sources.

TARGETS?
Good question!

Shooting Targets - American Target Company
(third row down on the right)

For anyone from Canada who would like to join in, I suggest you try an internet search (USBR Target Canada seems to work). The sources of GMs up north seem to be variable.

You can also find practice targets on this forum. Look under "Little Monster" at:

Went to the range this morning. No wind for the most part. Low 80’s, 53% humidity.
Good part: shot my best score to date. Bad part: shot the last of the ammo that my rifle likes. The search is on.
Bought more Pistol Match and Standard Plus, but both are exhibiting multiple hot rounds. The search is on.😃

Took it out to 50yds for the first time. Not so great. The second target was worse than this one, but I changed up my routine and shot much better the last two rows. Get em next time.

Well done! Good luck in your ammo search. If you are interested in buying online, AmmoSeek has several Pistol Match offerings and Champion's Choice also has some.

Went back out today.
Shot at 50yds. Did better this time. Those -4s are a score killer. Got to work on that. Some of it is the ammo and some of it is me. Having bad results from the SK STD + bought recently so I tried some Tac-22.

Almost late to the party.
Switched up again with the American Synthetic. That thing squirms around like a cat being stuffed into a toilet bowl.Tried one of the pinch type bags.

August has not been a good month for my shooting. Heat and eye issues made range trips infrequent. I also ran out of SK Standard + and resorted to magazine. Yesterday I topped by LGS and spotted a CZ 452 Lux which is really tempting but have convinced myself to keep my 457 Lux. At least that is my story and I am sticking to it.

Thanks to all who keep this monthly event going and enjoy the fun. Hope September is nicer to all of us.

We get 15 minute relays at the range I go to so I try to finish my target during that time frame. Sometimes I rush the last row. Never enough time to reload during the hot range so that's when it's break time to repost targets and pick up brass.

This month was a bust for me. Never got in a card. I was playing too much with new scopes and not feeling good enough to attempt score. Last Tuesday I just didn't feel too good and didn't want to waste ammo, so I quit after 50 rounds. Got centered using SK Standard + but groups were nothing to write home about. Write here about either, so I'll try again next week.

I ended up putting an Athlon 6 X 24 50mm scope on my 457 Varmint. Shooting at 9 power I have to admit my other scopes are clearer but I like the reticle so I'll stick to it for a bit. At least I picked it up for a good price from MidwayUSA. It was about 1/2 off list. First time I ever spent that much on a scope.

I think I also found one reason my groups weren't all that good. Although I clean my guns after every outing I didn't do a very good time last week. Checking the carbon ring after only 50 rounds and it was terrible. I soaked the chamber in C4 for 15 minutes, took my bore scope to it and looked like I hadn't touched it at all.

Soaked a nylon brush and twisted about 50 times followed by another mop filled with C4 for 30 minutes. Carbon ring is GONE now so I ran a nylon brush down the barrel followed by a few patches until they came out clean.

We had 7 shooters in August, three of whom posted targets at 25 and 50. Congratulations to Matt who had the best targets at both distances this month.
(Edited. I missed Peter's score.)
