Armscor no more... an honest ammo review

Well, last weekend I burned up the last of my Armscor 22LR. It was the HVHP plated stuff at 36 grains. I purchased and shot 3 (maybe 4?) bricks of it in the last 6 months or so. Though I overpaid as is the norm lately, at regular prices this ammo is cheap.... many online sites show it selling at bulk prices, even if purchased by the box. That puts it in the 7-8 cents per round range, even in small quantities.

The good

The vast majority of them go bang on the first strike.

It's bulk price cheap.

It has a projectile that goes forward and hits the target much of the time.

The box has a target on the inside.

The waxy coating is firm enough to not leave your fingers greasy like some ammo will.

The bad

Really dirty, both outside the case and the propellant. Extra cleaning after shooting.

The waxy surface and lack of quality resulted in some stovepipes and extraction issues in two of two rimfires I shot it in (Ruger Mark II and Rossi RS22) both of which are usually rare to jam/malfunction even with cheap ammo. I cleaned some of the rounds and that helped things, but the stuff is thick and a pain to wipe off.

Accuracy is fairly dismal. It's enough for plinking, and now and then you can get a tight 5 or so group. But I experiences some fliers that were beyond horrid, and the consistency is lacking. Jaia's 50 at 200 thread results confirmed that at least it wasn't all me.

Jaia's result

Jaia's result round two

The target in the box is stated as a 25 meter target, but would be better used at 10 or 15 yards if you want all the rounds to impact the target!

Conclusion

It's cheap ammo that performs like cheap ammo. Despite the title of my thread (which is true since all mine is gone) I'd buy it again if I needed cheap plinking ammo. Here and there I had targets that were respectable given the setups and my skillset, but often stringing together more than 5-10 decent shots in a row just won't happen often..... the stuff is inconsistent. All that I used was purchased from the same source, and I didn't check any lot numbers, so YMMV.

With the current madness in pricing, I've seen this stuff for stupid prices, along with every other ammo made. If you have to pay stupid pricing, remember this is along the lines of cheap bulk ammo. If you have a better option, choose it. But in terms of value... well you get what you pay for, and it does fill a void for value priced ammo. As a note I've also fired a couple boxes of 9mm Armscor that was value priced, and found that overall it was similar, but had no waxy coating and much more in line with any other inexpensive centerfire pistol round.

I'm still deciding when and what/how I'm going to shoot today, and was bored. With the current run on ammo, I thought someone might appreciate the scoop on a low cost option.

I’ve never shot any of the 22 ammo. I pretty much stick to sk std+. I have shot a lot of the magnum ammo and it’s decent, but dirty like you said. I remember buying it for 50-60 a brick at the Tulsa gun show. I probably have 8-10 bricks left and I doubt I’ll ever shoot it all unless things got REALLY bad.

Do they only have one flavor of the 22lr?

Last summer I bought the HV 36 gn locally at $21./brick:eek:

I personally like the ammo even with its dirtiness, several of my Marlins love the stuff, use for gophers:t

I tried some and yes it is cheap plinking ammo IMHO. But like pipestone said, it fits his needs and works well in his guns. So much of 22lr depends on the luck or high tech chemistry of the match between the ammo and the gun. So I would encourage all to try different ammo to SEE what works best in your gun for your needs.
Good info Signmaster, thank you.

There are, or used to be, at least two different ARMSCOR 22 lr hp ammo. One has a brass case and is about twice the price of the other, which has a nickle plated case. My 10/22 shoots the brass cased hp pretty well, certainly good enough for ground squirrels at typical ranges. Get an occasional misfire, which usually fires a second time through - maybe one every 150 rounds.

My experience for reference.

Just to clarify for all.... I don't hate this stuff. It will fill a void for many people. Though I overpaid, that was a result of the current trends, not the pricing that Armscor sells for.

And feel free to add your results. As always YMMV.

As far as types, the only ones I've seen lately are the 36gr hollow points and a 40gr round nose that aren't washed. I've only had the one to shoot personally, but the 40gr is slightly lower velocity.

I got one box of that back in the Obama I panic .... apparently mis-labeled test rounds since there were triangular holes in the bottom of each case. No priming compound or primer - just case w/ extra hole and bullet.

I emailed the folks at armscor about it they were rather responsive and wanted me to send them the ammo and make it right, but shipping a single box of 50 rounds would've been a PITA and not worth it to me.

That's and interesting mistake on their part, but might have been worth keeping regardless as a strange fluke.

ONe of my local stores had it about 2 months ago at $3/ box, limit 3 boxes so I figured for under $10 why not. I figured it is cheap plinking ammo so any sort of serious accuracy testing forget it. The issue was about no exaggeration between 5&10 misfires per box, across several different guns
I've seen it listed dirt cheap online too. It's actually almost as cheap or cheaper than much bulk stuff. And a lot of the bulk stuff isn't much better.

I did much better on misfires, I think maybe only a few across a few bricks. My only funciton issues were feed related. Neither was enough to consider "bad" when the price was factored in, just an irritation mostly.
