I have been thinking on this for awhile. So last week I ordered a ER Shaw 20" Ruger Precision Rimfire barrel. I made some tools to get the barrel off. It was really easy actually. I knocked out the pin that holds the barrel and receiver together. Then pressed out the barrel.

This what I started with. It was a compact version. I added a Boyds stock to make it more comfortable to shoot.

There are some differences between the two guns. The regular American the barrel is a interference fit and pinned. The Precision is just like a AR15 barrel with the nut that holds the barrel on. And the barrel is a slip fit. There is a 0.003" in diameter difference between the two barrels. The American is larger than the Precision. So to make the Precision barrel work I took a 0.0015" stainless steel shim and wrapped the barrel tenon. I thin froze the barrel for several hours in our deep freezer. I then heated up the receiver a little. I put some loctite 680 on the barrel tenon then inside the receiver. Then I slipped them together.

You have to make sure the extracter grove and the other thing on the bolt line up. There is a little room to twist the barrel to make sure they both are in the right spot. I then let it sit for 12 hours to let the loctite do its thing. I then got a 0.123" drill bit and drilled the barrel for the split pin. Then tapped it in to further lock the barrel.

I went out this morning very early to test fire and break it in a little. It shot very well. Better than the factory barrel. I was just using some junk bulk ammo to sight in the scope. I was hitting shotshell hulls at 75yds every shot once sighted in. I have a feeling it will continue to shoot better once there are some rounds through it. Right now i shout about 100 rds today.

Here is a little video showing it a little better.

That is a real interesting post!
The standard answer for a barrel swap on a RAR, is the barrel can't be removed, or is too difficult to remove.
My guess is that ER Shaw could make a barrel with a 0.003" larger diameter, and just as sure they could machine the cut for the pin.

How did you accomplish that?
In the first pic is the plate that the barrel slides through. I bored it to 0.010" larger than the barrel diameter to let the receiver rest on the plate. I turned a piece of brass rod to slide into the receiver. I went to a freinds shop and used their hydraulic press to push the barrel out. It came out easy. I think it was a 3 ton press.

If you have access to this stuff and know how to work on things it is a very easy swap. I would not go the 0.003" press fit. Way too much. Even at the 0.0015" I went with the barrel was tight. Plus the 680 and cross pin it is not going anywhere.

The old lady wanted to go for a ride today so I also wanted to get some good 22 ammo. So we went out the Iowa City to Fin an Feather. They are like Scheels. But they carry a couple of different types of good 22 ammo. I picked up some Eley Club and Target. And some SK Rifle Match.

We got back home around 4 in the afternoon. I grabbed a sandwich and loaded the car up to go test this ammo. I swapped scopes on this gun. It is the Ruger American rimfire I swapped the barrel on with the Precision rimfire barrel from Shaw.

Needless to say I need to run back out and get some more ammo with the same lot #. It really liked the SK Match. a .118" group of 5 at 50yds off the bipod. I shoot 10rds of the ammo before I go to a 5 rd group to season the barrel with that ammo.

Tomorrows project is to make the comb a little higher for better eye placement.
