I see lots of guys post targets and are unsatisfied with the groups they get from their 10/22s. What I notice is many times, their aiming point is a 1" black circle. It is hard to aim at the exact same point in a black circle from shot to shot.
I recently found these little .250" stickers at WalMart. I put them on white cardstock paper and make great cheap targets.

I use targets with + on them so I can line up scope crosshairs with the +
the small dot are a great
idea also, a buddy of mine was a soda route driver and would give me rolls of stickers they used for sales or BOGO
they were bright colors and 3/4 inch good for 100y open sights and 300Y scopes shooting

feel free to download and copy my target if anyone wants it

But my goal in shooting groups is not to hit that 1/4" dot. I purposfully move my point of impact away so I don't hit it. Now if I were to try to hit a series of those I would move my poi to my poa. As long as I am getting a 5 shot group @50 yds in the 2's and 3's I'm pretty sure I could also transition to hitting a bullseye.
When I go to the range, I am looking to attempt to better my rifle handling skills and to do that, ( in my opinion and you know what they say about opinions) you really need to shoot groups to verify your consistency. If I can shoot 20 5 shot groups and never get anything bigger than mid 4's with at least half in mid 2s to high 3s I feel I'm on the right track and doing better than average with a home built 10/22.
I might just try the grid thing though just to see what it's all about.

I noticed that my 1/2” red dot will disappear at 100 yards when the crosshairs are aligned perfectly over it with a 3-9x40mm scope. Tiny groups too. A bigger dot that doesn’t totally disappear yields larger group sizes, so pick your target based on your scope magnification and distance shooting to get best results imo.

Used to do a lot of aspirin shoots, that was a blast. Always pushing the limits, we tried many things as targets, so far my favorite is 6mm airsoft bbs stuck to cardstock with clear silicone, the best of all (and use caution) are the glow in the dark airsoft bbs at night. Hold a flashlight to them for a few seconds and enjoy. It's hard to see the misses, but when you hit, glow in the dark shrapnel flys. it'll definitely sharpen your skills.

I found these as a compromise to try out, 1/4" middle hole if you have the magnified picture or 1/2" bright circle for iron sights. We used to call them "paper buttholes" but I only saw them in white until now. $1.92 for 924 targets!

I use a sheet of paper with 1” - .5” .25” squares with
1/8” dots either above or below depending on which way you hold the paper.
Aim point is the 1/8” dot and I adjust the scope up or down so the holes I make are center in the square for the distance I’m shooting “ .25 square or circle for 25yd and so on.
Most of my glass is fine cross hair with 1/8” dot.
cover one dot with the other dot and shoot.

literally aim small shoot small. And my aim point remains intact.

A nice small easy to see (for scope power) dot or diamond is fine. When shooting the .22LR Rimfire cartridge I have found the impacts from even the lightest breezes move bullets a lot more than potential aiming errors. Learning how to deal with wind and choosing the right ammo for your plinker has a lot more influence on groups than what target you are aiming at. YMMV.
