Joined a club that has a 1k range and decided to give it a go today. Up to this point about 412 yds. has been my longest shooting. My shooting buddy and I broke out our 6.5 Grendel rifles, blew off the dust, gathered up ammo and got with it. It's been about 5 years since We've even seen these rifles....this is gonna be interesting!!!

The range has steels set at various ranges from 100 yds to 1050 yds.. We hung a paper target at 100yds to check zero. This is where the fun started!!! Three shots in and I can't even hit a 2 foot square piece of paper....at 100yds :ahh:..buddy looks at me and ask WTH are you shooting at!!!:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: I moved to a fresh diamond put 2 on paper and then........Bam!!!! where did the third shot go??? I tried making some adjustments in futility and all I could accomplish was was shooting around a 12 inch circle. Buddy asked what scope I was using and I replied...my vortex. He busted out laughing, said a few more curse words and told me to take that piece of :poop::poop: off and throw it in the trash.. I took it off and popped my Trijicon 3x9x40mm Creedo HX on. Three shots at 100 yds. and I'm off to the races!!! I love my LaRue one piece mounts. :D

We talk just a little bit and he asked, how far is that target right there. I hit it with my rangefinder and came up with 454 yds......looks like a good place to start. Four shots.....Four hits and we move on. Next targets were at 514 yds and we went four for four again.....Nice!! 614 yds was our next stop and this time it was some kind of skinny looking steel silhouette. We finished up there with a nice fist size group in the center...now we were talking some :poop: !!!! On to the next steel we go and it just happened to range at 660 yds. We threw a couple in the dirt for the first time and all of a sudden this red light started flashing.....WTH is that....we busted out laughing as we lit it up!!

Now we're through with the close stuff....down the middle we go. There are two silhouettes on a berm right down the middle of the range. I hit them with the rangefinder and I got nothing....nadda. Buddy says what's up...I'm not sure. we guessed about 800 yds and I told him my rangefinder would only go to 800 so we figured it was just over that. We spotted each other again and after about three shots what do you know....more red lights...this is awesome!!!! We were going about 3 outta 5 shots on these. After all the fun was over and we are packing up, my buddy asked another shooter who also works at the range, how far are those center targets.
The gentleman replied..... the red and blue silhouettes down the middle are 1025 yds.... :hammer::hammer::yippee::banana::yippee::banana: We just busted out laughing!!! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Rifles for the day were a LaRue 6.5 Grendel and a home built 6.5 Grendel with a Lilja barrel.
I shot 120gr. SMK's over 27.6gr. of ARcomp in my LaRue and my buddy was shooting 123gr Lapua Scenars over 27.8gr. of ARcomp through his Lilja.

After today's adventure, I've now found a use for my Trijicon Tenmile HX 3x18x50......we'll be back!!!! ;)

Sorry but this is all I have for pics of todays excitement....not allowed to go past 100yds down range.

Way to go! You wouldn’t happen to recall your come up at those distances would you?

What kind of groups do you shoot at 100 with that set up?

I’ve got a couple Grendel’s, but I’m only shooting factory Hornady Black ELD-M’s, SST’s, and BTHP’s. I know the cartridge is capable, but doubt the idiot on the trigger is.

I crunched some numbers and came up with about 39 moa or 12 mils of up to get to 1000yds.

The different loads we shoot range from about 2430 fps to 2560 fps.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Sir!!

Come up....well......I didn't do any dialing, I was using the strada lines in my scope. We were kinda getting lucky with our educated guess' on what to use. I know what the reticle specs are in my scope....guess I could sit down some day and figure the holdovers out. I will say when we got to 1025yds........we were out of lines to use and the target was in the bottom of my scope. My little trijicon is a fine hunting scope but has no parallax adjustment and this was a might stretch for it. A nice surprise was seeing the silhouettes was very easy with it. I checked parallax and had what looked to be about 3 feet of movement on my reticle at 1025 yds...... Head placement was very critical.

My LaRue is an Ultimate Upper Kit I picked up a few years back. I put it together and it has shot very good for me. My Dad has one that shoots even better. Both of these LaRue rifles shoot Hornady Black 123 eld-m's very good. It's been hard to find a handload that will out shoot the Hornady load.

Velocities run about 2480fps to 2560fps depending on load.

I get 3" groups at 406 yds. with my rifle. This is an average 5 shot group for my LaRue at 100 yds.

This is 7 shots at 100yds....was finishing off a few rounds I had left in the box.......1/2" squares on target.

I've never put an AR upper in 6.5 Grendel together to this point, but after shooting a couple of ARs in 6 RAT out to 600 in XC HP matches, I got curious about the parent 6.5 Grendel. I had a Howa Mini bolt gun in 6.5 Grendel, but since I'd re-barreled several other Mini actions with custom barrels, decided to do the same in this case, and used a Bartlein 1-8tw blank that I'd found in Remington magnum sporter contour, chambered with my 6.5 Grendel reamer. I still haven't shot it at anything out past 600yds, but it does ok at that distance. I've got a good supply of Starline Grendel brass & Sierra 107 & 123 MKs, just need to get more motivated and work up really decent 600yd loads for this little rifle, then try it at 1000yds. These are some of the custom barreled Mini builds I've done over the past several years - from top down: 6.5 Grendel in B&C M40 style stock; 20 Tactical in Boyds ProVarmint; 22 Grendel in Boyds Heritage hunter; 6 RAT in McMillan Game Scout.

That's a nice collection you have. Most of my experience with the 6.5 Grendel is in the AR. I bought a Howa mini a few years ago wanting to try the Grendel in a bolt gun, that experience was not so good. I trade the Howa to someone that wanted to just make noise.
My shooting buddy's Dad built a Grendel on a Rem. 700 short action with a Lilja barrel and dropped it into a McMillan stock.....it's without a doubt one of the most accurate rifles I've ever had the pleasure of shooting. He's suppose to go back to the range with us this weekend. I think he will be bringing this rifle with him....I hope!!

I've been using Hornady and Starline brass with good results.

I found the comment and experience around the Vortex amusing. Some folks act as-if Vortex was god's gift to the rifleman. And even stepping up from the rather poor Crossfire, where the glass may look ok, we dont know what is going on inside. This one self destructed. They do have a lifetime warranty.

I recently saw a used 527 in 6.5G. My funds have got a lot tighter with shrinking post covid dollars. Had to walk away. That remains a nagging regret in the back of my mind.

My limited experience with Vortex scopes was similar to the OP's, although my Viper did last most of a whole season before it spit the bit...

I’m addicted to the 6.5 Grendel and have four AR-15’s, one with 20” Shilen, an 18” Faxon Monster Logo barrel plus a 16” Faxon group buy Monster Logo barrel and a 16” J&T Distributing. I have an AR-15 pistol with a Monster Logo 12” barrel manufactured by Green Mountain. I also bought a Cz 527 American with 23“-24” barrel. My longest hits were in Wyoming at 880 yards off my portable bench with my 20” Shilen. Cold gun and I put the dope on my scope and went 5 for 5 hits on a steel silhouette target at 880 yards. We moved the target to 1000 yards and a storm front moved in. Winds started swirling and had to quit after one try as lightening was getting to close for comfort on that plateau at 7200’ ASL.

I’ve shot to 800 yards in the midwest at 450’ ASL but the terrain makes it difficult to shoot much further at my friend’s farm. The foliage just makes it difficult to see your misses beyond 800 yards even though I’ve tried shooting at that location at 1000 yards. I put canted 20 MOA mounts on my 6.5 Grendel rifles. My 16” 6.5 Grendel with Leupold scope elevation maxed out at about 800 yards at 450’ ASL with a zero cant mount. I haven’t had any issues with canted mounts and they are usually the same price as zero cant one piece mounts.

Yep, they have a way of growing on you for sure. I know I'm pushing the limits of the Grendel but it's a lot of fun.

I'm going to make some adjustments to my load so I can get a little better results at these longer distances. My understanding is I'm leaving some on the table by using the 120gr Sierra MatchKing.

Round Two!!!!

Made some changes to my rifle and headed back to the range. I put my Trijicon 3x18x50 Tenmile HX into a Larue 20 MOA mount and dropped it on top of my Grendel. Also added a Magpul Gen3 PRS stock which made it a lot easier to get behind my rifle while shooting.

Now I need to work on my loads for this kind of distance. Using the Sierra 120gr. matchking I'm dialing 14.6 mils to reach 1025 yds. and today I was having to hold 2.75 mils for windage. I think I can cut some of this down by using a bullet with a better BC. My best today was 4 out of 5 at 1025 when I caught the wind letting up just a little.

Pics of the day.......

I had a good number of Sierra 6.5mm 107gr Match Kings left from back when I was shooting an Elesio RTM tubegun in 6.5x47 in XTC HP matches. I loaded 85gr HPs for use at 200, 107s at 300, and 130VLDs at 600 in that rifle, which I sold several years ago. The little 6.5mm 107s have an excellent BC, so I've been playing with them in my Howa Mini 6.5 Grendel, which I re-barreled with a Bartlein 1-8tw bbl in Rem Mag sporter contour. Not much to report at this time, as I've not put a lot of time or effort into working up loads for my Grendel...yet. Every time I see a thread like this one, it makes me want to get after it and find out just how good my little Mini Grendel will shoot...
