5MM what is the purposse/place?

I have often thought about buying a 5MM rimfire rifle, but so far can not define it's real use. I do have 22 shorts, LRs, 22Mag, and 17HMR.

I tend to see the 5MM somewhat like the 16ga shotgun or 243 Win. The 20 and 12 will cover any need as does the 223 (or 22-250) and the 270. The bullet weight and rifle selection is also very limited.

I would appreciate a real justification to buy a 5MM (other than another toy). Input, appreciated.

5mm projectiles tend to be ballistically superior to either .172 or .224 offerings. One needs to look no further than the .204 Rugar for proof.

The 5mm RFM was ahead of it's time. If it had been introduced with today's superior .204 bullets such as the 32gr V-Max, it would have been much more successful.

My 5mm CF conversion has the same energy at 185yds with a .204 33gr V-Max bullet as the 17 HMR has at the muzzle.

When the 5MM was 1st introduced many naysayers tried to compare it to the 22 Mag . They became believers when thy actually used a 5 MM in the field. It is the idea round for Turkeys where allowed by law

There is no real justification! Just the enjoyment of owning and shooting a rifle of a different caliber. You have the magnum rimfires covered with the 22WMR and 17HMR. I have a Remington 592 5mm and enjoy hunting with it a few times a year.

Its the most powerful rf in terminal performance out there, thats all. I consider all my guns weapons rather than toys but thats JMO. If grandma was still alive she'd tell you to "Buy whatever your pretty little heart tells you to."

Thanks for the input and education on the 5MM. I did not realize it ran considerably above the 22Mag and 17HMR pressure level. From what I have been able to find out, rifle selection is somewhat limited. Maybe the rimfire 16 gage is well worth consideration - since it comes in a 3 1/2" case.

Who knows what lurks beneath the factory mud Rem and CZ are so lavish with.

My plain jane beat up restored 5MM. The forearm was completely featureless and a lighter color however.

Wildcat, I think you missed my point. The 223/22-250 is a great varmint cartridge and the 270 Win is a great deer/elk round. The 243/6MM is a fair varmint and marginal for larger deer - BUT not GREAT for either end. (I own and have shot all of them.). Likewise a 12ga from 2 3/4" thru 3 1/2" can handle about anything and a 20ga in 2 3/4" and 3" is light and an easier carry but will handle everything a 12 in 2 3/4" can handle. What I learned about the 5MM is that the operating pressure (and energy) is relatively higher than the 22 Mag and 17 HMR (I also own both of these). However the 17WSM is another story - energy and trajectory are great. Would lean toward the WSM - but now near my .17 Rem/222Rem rifles???????????????

Some makers put mud on all some models to cover up blems and plain janes to make em all look pretty much the same. Mine's the tube feed and I'd bet the finishes were a lot alike.

Wasn't me as I've never had a Mach2.
