Honestly, with a 17hmr, I'd return it for the credit. Remington aren't the only brand that have trouble with them on auto loaders and this one's already proven it'll bite you. (I'm glad you're OK.)

I've seen places online where somebody claimed they would rechamber it in 22 wmr, but I've never seen it in reality and the recall notice mentions no such thing. (The original may have, but it currently does not) I doubt they would want the liability of a firearm out there that had all ready malfunctioned getting back into the wild.

Anyhow, you'll get $200 toward any remington you like and shipping it back to them is free.

In the end, you won't have a magnum 597 for $180 like you thought, but you'll be up $20 and 1/2 way there to a brand new 22 magnum 597 if you really have your heart set on one. I'd even splurge for a laminate stocked one.

There are several reasons why they blow and usually there isn't much you can do about it. Your best option if you still want a semi with some oomph is send it to Rem and they will re-barrel it to a 22Mag on their dime.

Thanks man! Yeah I have a marlin 25mn 22mag and love it. Perfect for plinking turtle heads out to 100 yards with my hornadys. If they do barrel swaps for free then that's what ill do because I don'thave a semi 22mag currently. I guess I will contact Remington in the morning.

I talked to a guy who regularly shoots a Ruger 1022 17M2 conversion. He says the big problem with these bottle neck cartridges is keeping the chamber clean. He cleans every 50 rounds. When it gets dirty there is a chance of an out of battery discharge blowing stuff where it shouldn't go like down your mag well.
I just got a 597 in .22 mag and like it. The gun is heavy I think they learned a lesson and I'd be surprised if the receiver was not steel instead of alloy which have also had a tendency to crack.
I got a green heavy barrel stock off Ebay for $40, put a Volquartsen hammer, a Spring kit in it for a 2.5 pound trigger pull. The heavy barrel stock makes a nice free floating forend. Remember the Rem is a .850 bull barrel not a big .920 so the gap is not huge.

Did you have a chance to contact Remington? What did they tell you they would do?

I have a 597 in 17hmr and am pondering what I want to do with it. I don't know if I should try to sell it or see if Remington will convert it over to 22wmr.

 

I to have blown a 17hmr up. I was so excited in the purchase that I rushed home, thru in some ammo, and boom. After some research, I ordered replacement parts, put it back together, and no problems since. It is an absolute tack driver. Keep the chamber clean and you will not have any problems. She will not be made into a 22wmr!!!

 

Is this 17 still holding up. I bought one at an estate sale nbf in rem 597

 

When you call Remington, they will tell you what your options are, to include the 22 magnum conversion.

In my opinion, if you do anything other than get the 22 mag conversion, you are short changing yourself. Why accept a $200 or $250 certificate towards another Remington firearm, when a 597 in 22 magnum cost about $400?

They may not advertise it, because the decision was forced by a class action lawsuit, but they will convert it to 22 magnum. The only drawback is that when you buy a 22 magnum, they come with sights, but since the 17HMR did not come with sights, they don't install sights on the replacement barrel.

I had mine converted. They paid shipping both ways, providing the shipping carton and the repair was completed quickly. I think I had it back in less than two weeks. I don't remember the exact time frame, but it did not take long at all.

 

Converted to 22 Mag

Just got my 597 back today after it was converted from 17 to 22 mag. It took several months due to the fact that Remington had me take it to their repair site in Az, and then they never sent them the barrel. After calling several times the service center in Az was instructed to send it to Remington and then it took about 2 weeks. I was concerned with all the handling about damage but all is well and looks like it was when I sent it. I had only run about 100 rounds through in 17, and it is in new condition. I was going to keep it in the safe when all they offered was $200 gift certificate until I learned about the conversion to 22M.

 

What a disappointment. I just purchased this Remington 597, and found out about the recall. After contacting Remington, they were quick to let me know, they were not responsible for honoring the recall. They said they purchased the assets of Remington Outdoors and would not be honoring the preious recalls.

 

I recently (3 months ago) picked up a real nice 597 in 17HMR with full disclosure by the seller. I have a new Jarvis 22 WMR barrel I will use to swap out the 17HMR barrel. Waiting till after Xmas when I can order a Boyd’s varmint stock and will swap it out.

 

I swapped my 17 barrel for the Jarvis 22 win mag as well. I never had any issues shooting the 17 however.
