597 magnum recoil springs question...

I read somewhere or another (might have been on here) that since the magnum version has 2 springs on each side that removing one of them will help with problems cycling. My gun doesnt even have 150 rounds through it yet, but it worked with one type of ammo and the other type i tryed it wouldnt cycle. The spent shell ejected, but the bolt didnt go back far enough to reset the hammer. would removing one of these springs help? I know it would help with the cycling issue, but would i then have problems with cases bulging. (its 22 mag NOT 17hmr) thanks for any comments...

Leave both springs in place. Take action out of stock and loosen the two guide rod set screws at the back end of the action to finger tight. In the 597 if the set screws are tight the guide rods will bow and bind up on the bolt. Clean the action and run it dry or with very little lube. You have not shot enough ammo yet to break in the gun so after doing the adjustments and cleaning get more of the ammo it liked and shoot a few hundred more rounds to smooth things up. I have both the .17 and the .22Mag and they both function fine after the above mentioned steps are taken.

When i got the gun i first totally disassembled and when putting back together tryed not to overtighten them....by finger tight you mean finger tight with the allen wrench? or just as far as they will go by actual fingers...im assuming with the allen wrench as it would be hard to even put them in by finger but jw.. also, with the 22 magnum how is the accuracy...I know not to expect what my bolt HMR can do but when i took it out i wasnt too impressed...

Yes finger tight with the allen wrench. My .22mag shoots about the same as my .22lr 597. I get some 1 inch or so groups at 50 yards from the bench. I have not tried many kinds of ammo yet. Mostly the old CCI Maxi Mags that I had left over from a different gun. The newer Vmax style lighter weight bullits shot ok also and worked great on Jackrabbits. My .17HMR 597 shoots better than the .22's but has been recalled so It will probably go back to Remington and get the barrel swapped to .22Mag. Then I will do more ammo testing and keep the one that shoots the best. Another thing to check for is if the hammer binds between the plastic spacers inside the trigger housing. I have had a couple that needed a few thousandths taken off the spacers to get the hammer to run without friction. A lot of the guys buy a Volquartzen hammer to replace the factory one. You should end up with about a 3 lb trigger pull so it helps to shoot a little better.
