Set up: PR Leupold set about 30x
Individual Target Scores: 48 1x, 48 2×, 49 2×, 47 1×, 47.
Notes: not too hot, but very humid with a light breeze. Oh so close and a prime example of not focusing on your score while your shooting. But i can see the holes in the paper and know whats needed to reach my goal. This knowledge of what is required is poison. By target #4 i had my blood pressure up about 30%. The very last shot needed to be a 10, but i totally blew it, almost threw it into the 8 ring.
Maybe i'll try it with the scope set to 18x next time.

Seems the 100yd match has died a quiet death, shortly after it started... such is life i supose.
Since silhouette nationals are just around the corner, i'm shooting as many different types of targets at differing distances as possible. So i shot at 100m today with my 54.18msr and alternated with 5 shot intervals with the 308.

Notes: Beautiful day 87°, 7 to 16 mph wind, intermittently cloudy. It was so nice I didn't think it could be North Texas in July. I spent most of my time teaching my friend CJ how to shoot sitting position and prone position for an upcoming High Power Match. He shot a couple 100s sitting and several 100s prone with my 1022. I hope he is able to transition to his AR from my 1022. CJ comes from a country that does not allow anyone to own a gun.

To many other activities going on plus weather problems to which was added just very poor shooting. Most mental and some physical. Oh well, this is what I had. So from the MIlan Rifle Club

Thanks for the matches maybe get some others back when we get into cool weather and less F-class and other outdoor games. Just have to wait and see.

In the first match I ever shot,a very experienced and grumpy personality told me when I asked if I should make sight corrections during the match. "Who's sights are they?"...there mine. "Then use them."

I just don't have enough experience with adjusting sights. I start with resting the rifle on a tripod, shooting groups of 3-5 and adjusting, then repeating. Then I do the same while shooting offhand because I definitely aim and shoot differently offhand. It takes me a couple of dozen shots to adjust. Every time I change something in rifle, hold or stance, I re-adjust. If I shoot for score and start drifting I am not sure how much to adjust to compensate for drift versus forcing myself to be more consistent in aiming, breathing, pulling the trigger.

I don't know what causes drift. I don't have any people around me who can give me pointers. A couple of times I got pointers from a competitive shooter when he happened to be at the range at the same time. I also had a couple of detailed phone conversations with an experienced person. So 4 times in 2 years...

I am slowly learning and getting better. I can now call most of my shots. My stance has improved and I don't tire as quickly. I am much more consistent now. Now my groups offhand at 25y are less than half the size of my groups with supported rifle when I started a little less than 2 years ago.

You have a lot of positives listed and that is fantastic and your being able to call your shots is huge. It proves that your aiming sequence is consistent and well executed. Personal improvement is what this is all boiled down to. I did not mean to come across as anything but helpful. If those other factors are going well, don't be afraid to adjust a few clicks here or there to help keep the groups loosely centered.

I’d suggest reading “the leather sling and shooting positions” and “sight alignment, trigger control and the big lie”. They’re 100% geared towards service rifle competitors but a lot of the information is universal.

Consistency is a big part of target shooting. I find that I’m most successful when I am able stay in my routine
1- shoulder gun; place toe in should pocket, muzzle elevated, and rotate down to parallel. Place head on gun
2- close eyes, relax and open eyes. Am I on target? Adjust feet/adjust lean and repeat until on target
3- breath in, finger on trigger, exhale slowly
4- squeeze trigger until bang.
5- gun down.
6- Check target in spotting scope. It shouldn’t be surprising.
7- repeat

An inconsistent position might be causing what you are calling drift. Maybe head position? With an AR or a garand/m1a, it’s easy. With my CZ, I have to pay attention to it. Have a mental checklist that you run through for each shot. If not that, then a mechanical issue with sights.

There are quite a few items that can cause poi to shift, especially when shooting iron sights.
If shooting outdoors, the sun's change in position will cause shadows that can trick the brain and result in a change in poa, without the shooter recognizing it.
Changing conditions, such as temperature and humidity are factors as well.
NPA, or lack of aquiring a perfect NPA, will definetly result in a shift in poi.
Fatigue itself is another culprit, multiple errors can occur as we tire.

I went to the range Friday, mostly just to get off the couch. My first target was terrible as usual so I decided to make a change. I took the 2 pound weight off the fore arm of my RPRR. It did make it a little but I think I can get used to it. I shot 450-3X after the change.

Thank you STRUGL4X'SC, Kantrol and Chickenhater for your advice.

I can eliminate sights as the cause of my problems since I have the same issue with other rifles. After further analysis, I can see that the problem became worse during the summer when it's very hot at the range. I shoot at an indoor range with consistent lighting (very good in some ranges and very poor in others). During winter it tends to be very cold at the range so I wear a sweatshirt and a light outdoor jacket. Now that it is hot, I only have a t-shirt on. My butt plate is adjusted as low as it will go, but when I am only wearing a t-shirt I find it very difficult to get good position on my shoulder. I think this in turn makes it more difficult to get the correct cheek position on the adjustable cheek rest. I noticed that I keep moving my cheek. I will experiment with raising the cheek rest the next time I am shooting.
