24 to 26 inch barrel length

I’m looking to do a 1.25” straight contour barrel in the 24 inch to 26 inch length for a Vudoo repeater for balance. This will be for 22 PRS.
Is there a “best length” that people have found in this range where the harmonics are better than others? I realize that most bench rest 22’s don’t have this contour so it may be hard to answer.
Thanks

Nobody shoots that bg a dia. But they are notoriously harder to tune, should you mount a tuner.
your best bet is not to have a pre determined lenght but to make sure, within that range, it gets cut at the tightest point in the blank.

A lot of people shoot barrels that heavy in PRS matches. It's very popular to have a straight contour barrel of 1.2" or 1.25" in the 22-24" length.

But as the OP just mentioned the whole rifle, not just the barrel, is how it has to be set up to balance. I have a 22" MTU in a Manners TCS that balances perfectly and also an 18" Kukri that was in a Manners PRS2 stock and it balanced also. Comes down to the whole set up. Foundation stocks are heavier in the rear but you could add weight in the front also. Comes down to how heavy you want the rifle. Mine with the 22" is about 19 pounds with everything.

The thread was started in the BR section. So it's kind of understandable why TRSR8 said nobody shoots countours that heavy. It has nothing to do with weight. It has do with the barrels being tunable. People used to shoot barrels that heavy but moved to contours that respond to tuning better.

I've shot some PRS and I get the whole balance thing. However, at least for me, balance is second to accuracy. If I was going to do another PRS build I'd want to use a tuner and I'd use a barrel that was .900-.920 dia and have it cut and crowned on a tight spot. Hopefully around 24" long. If it's nose heavy I'd add weight to the stock. Weight should be just about right. Heavy enough to provide stability off a barrier yet light enough to be able to move around easy enough and shoot offhand if a stage calls for it

I specifically posted this in the BR section instead of the PRS section because I know the guys that shoot BR are the most extreme accuracy oriented. Hope that was ok.

I was hoping some older/wiser gentleman that have shot BR for 50 years and used every combination of barrel length could chime in and say something like “I’ve had 10, 24 inch barrels and none of them would shoot as good as my 25 inch barrels”. I didn’t know if there is some barrel length that people stay away from in the 24-26 inch range that is typically known not to produce good results. Any length in the 24 to 26 inch range would fit my need.

It is the BR but he did say 22 PRS. Sorry if I hurt the BR guy's feelings. LOL

Some still use a tapered barrel you mentioned and not all are the straights but there are more and more straight tapers and they are all plenty accurate for PRS matches when using the right ammo. It all comes down to what works for the shooter.

But the difference is PRS is not BR. You don’t need a .1 rifle to win matches. You can win with a .5 rifle that you can run through props and make hits in 90-120 seconds for 10-12 shots. Accuracy is never a bad thing but when shooting a specific sport you want to look at that sport and ask those people what they run in that sport and why. Asking guys who shoot a different sport how to set up the rifle might not work out as well 😉

And yes the heavier barrels are harder to tune but a lot of guys shoot them just fine without tuners. Comes down to the end user if he wants to run a tuner or not.

I just had Vudoo build me a 360. I intend to shoot PRS with it, some bench rested long range silhouette shooting, and possibly may try ARA benchrest. I love to shoot tiny groups that aren't necessary in PRS. I have a 26" x .90" diameter unthreaded Shilen barrel (RO contour). It is sub MOA from the 50 - 200 yards that I have shot. I may try a tuner down the road if I start to enjoy ARA benchrest. My rifle has a KRG Bravo with a spigot. This rifle balances well in front of the mag well and only weighs 13.8#s. That is heavy enough for my old body to move with in PRS
