.22LR Chamber Plug for Barrel Soaking / Cleaning

This is not as simple as a #000 cork. Although they are the right size, they tend to leak, getting solvent in the trigger assembly. The rubber stoppers are not sized like corks, the #000 size is much larger than the #000 cork. I can't find any #0000 rubber plugs in my area to compare the size. The chamber plug offerings with the O ring that say "22 Benchrest" are for .22LR? I just ordered one, and the person I ordered from didn't know the answer. I guess I'll find out soon enough. This wild goose chase is beginning to bore me. Any suggestions here at RFC?

Howdy Ammohog, mechanics use tapered rubber plugs to seal off fuel/brake/vacuum lines when doing service work. I still have a tapered multistep plug in my toolbox that goes from 1/8" to 3/4" but in a quick search I don't see them being available now.

I do see this Thexton set that Advance Auto carries. https://www.thexton.com/plug-stoppers-p-23.html It works on gasoline so should be fine for solvents.

Just a thought.

Tried a foam ear plug in the chamber. Still leaks.

I just plug the muzzle, and fill the chamber. Then the leak fills the Tupperware bowl.:

Or you could stuff a patch in the chamber , put in a shell casing and close the bolt?
Just before the crown is where some of the fouling is. Tried an ear plug and a shell casing wrapped with teflon tape with closed bolt, still leaks. Keep the suggestions coming.

The standard on those stoppers is .250 on the narrow end Ammohog. Trying to stuff that into a .226 hole would be a trick unless you skinned the end down a bit. I have not tried it though.

The other question is solvent resistance. There are lots of forms of rubber and many aren't petroleum product resistant. Nitrile is a good choice. Silicone or Buna not so much although for short exposure it may not be a problem.

How about a shell casing with a small o ring? Just a thought, as I don't see any reason to fill my barrels with anything. Modern solvents seem to work just fine.[/QUOTE

Just tried the "O-ring around a shell casing" idea. IT WORKED! Had a carbon ring about 1/2" into the chamber. Found a small O-ring at ACE hardware that would fit snugly around the casing, slid it into the chamber of my Savage, closed the bolt, filled the barrel with BORETECH C4 Carbon cleaner and let it sit overnight. CARBON RING GONE and NO LEAKS! Haven't tried it on my VUDOO yet but I'm sure it will work...

Yes- I simply place a small O-ring over a fired casing and close the bolt on it.
Simple, effective and airtight in almost all my guns. Sometimes I have to stack 2 O-rings, but not often. PM me your mailing addy and I'll send you an assortment of the sizes that work for me.
