Time to get this going. Whacked my first one of the year yesterday. Small female, very reddish and light colored - almost thought it was a fox at first.

I was sitting in the RTV watching down a woods line where I saw one last week. I have noticed the locals have been out between 1200-1400 hours almost religiously the past few weeks. So expecting one out around 50-60 yards, I see this reddish thing coming out 20 yards away. Not much mystery how that went. Looking for where it may have come from in the woods, found a fresh dig in the middle of an open area. So my guess is she had recently been booted from the home den and was making a new home.

Shot my first of the year on Saturday, 329 yards with my new (to me) Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe 243, using a 60 gr Sierra HP over a healthy charge of H380. One shot, DRT; I was quite pleased but in all the excitement forgot to take a photo! Good luck to everyone this year, I'm hoping to get out and do quite a bit of hunting once I get my crop planted. Dogwoods are starting to bloom here in the Ozarks, so that's a sure indicator of groundhog time!

For all of those that connected this year already, great job. I went out th other day but was earlier in the day and a little windy. I didn't see any out but found a ton of new holes. I have to travel for work for the month of May so I will be out of commission until I return. If I can swing it, I may try to get out one time before I leave, weather permitting.

Eika and I spied our first chuck today. It was a beautiful day for a walk too. Sunny, 68° and little wind. Ranged him to 91 yards and while doing so he spotted us. I set up a shooting position anyway. Took a peak through the binoculars to relocate him. He'd moved about 3 feet into taller grass, but his head was exposed while he kept an eye on us.

It was an easy shot for the CZ455 in 17HMR. Eika had fun locating him and bringing him back.

Another one down. I was coming up the back lane and saw him running across the yard into the old front shed. He would have to have moved in within the last week, there was no activity in there up to last week. Parked the RTV and walked around to my truck, got out the gun, set up a chair looking down the front edge of the shed and waited. About 20 minutes later, he poked he head and just stayed there then disappeared. Poked his head out again, moved out a little farther and then stood up facing the other way. Suddenly he was face down. Only 30 yards, .17 HMR.

Number 2 for us. Spotted this guy at about 200 yards. Stocked to a laser ranged 99 yards so I could take a seated shot. Set up and in about 5 minutes he poked his head up out of the tall grass to check us out for the last time. Eika retrieved him and hauled him all the way back to the mini-van. This one will be hers.

Alright! Nice job. A young one. They're always too curious for their own good this time of year.

Tell us about your rifle. What cartridge is that Ruger throwing?

It’s the same 22lr from earlier monax hunting threads. I’ve had the Kidd ULW and F1 can for a while but only just upgraded from the Knoxx Axiom stock to an ODG Magpul X-22.

It was a rainy day, so noise from my movements were masked, and the chuck was distracted behind some tall grass. As soon as it turned (quartering away), and I saw its head in my scope, I sent a TAC-22 through the processor from about 10 yds away.
