17 HM2 Limited options.

Many years ago I got my son a T/C R 55 all weather 17 HM2. He's grown and gone and took the gun with him. Lately I've been in the market for one of my own. I've even picked up a few rounds for a gun that I've yet to buy.

I'm really surprised at the lack of available options in today's world. The gun will be for both plinking and hunting.

If money were no object, I'd buy a Volquartsen Summit and be done with it. And it already has a threaded barrel for a suppressor that I will have in a few months.

A viable option is the Savage A17, but I've read serious mixed reviews on this gun. Trigger work and a barrel thread will definitely be required after the purchase.

If Ruger was still making the Predator HM2 for Whittaker, I'd probably buy one. But again, I've read there were issues with the production run.

I know Sako has the Quad, but they appear to be as hard to find as a Unicorn.

I could buy a CZ 457 and do a barrel swap, but that would leave me a with an unused barrel, which would be a waste.

I could convert one of my Ruger 10/22s, but not sure I want to go down that rabbit trail.

Another possibility would be to get a Mach 2 barrel and a buttstock for my TC G2 Contender.

Lastly, I could just abandon the HM2 search and buy a HMR.... For now, I'm leaning towards the Savage A17.

I have never understood why people want a suppressor on a rifle that shoots supersonic. If you want quiet, shoot sub-sonic and have a suppressor. I am surprised the HM2 is still around. A .22 HMR will serve as well or better. And a .22 rimfire with ammo both sub-sonic and high speed will give you more flexibility. Just my thoughts. Are you wanting to shoot paper or hunt with it ?

You must not have shot hm2 much or used a suppressor. If ya know you know lol

Edit to add…why do you think they still make suppressors for super sonic centerfire calibers 🤪 it really makes a huge difference.

I probably thought the same until I purchased a few. Most of my unthreaded guns sit in the safe now. Too many rare classics to have them threaded.

17hm2 is a heck of a squirrel round, probably the best. I've got a 77/22 that is converted to m2 and its one of my favorites to hunt with, but barrels can be hard to find. I put a whistle pig m2 barrel on a Ruger precision and its a nice gun too. I've shot it with a suppressor and its still loud, like David said if you want quite there are better options. but as a squirrel rifle you just you can hardly beat an M2

I’ve got the A17m2 and I have to say it was a fun and interesting journey to get mine to shoot half way decent. I ended up changing out the stock for a Boyd’s and glass bedding it. And both those steps helped, but the biggest factor was the ammo. Mine like Hornady and is very lot sensitive. Different lots of the same ammo made a huge difference in my groups. But I will say for the money my Marlin 917m2 with a rifle basics trigger far outshoots my Savage A17. If you can find one snag it. Also Savage still offers the MK II in 17m2.
I have a Summit as well just in 22lr and the issue with a summit in 17m2 is the height of the top of the receiver compared to the barrel. To take advantage of the flat trajectory of the 17m2 you will want to mount your optic as low as you can to the barrel. So you can hold on target and hit without having to hold over to account for the scope height. With the summit this is almost impossible to do due to the height of receiver. Just some food for thought.

I bought an Anschutz 1502 a decade and a half back... I think... Anyway, the early ammo was terrible, split cases about 50% of the time. Now, CCI has figured out how to anneal the formed, primed cases and this is my favorite squirrel gun. I have several squirrel guns to choose from, rangimg from 22lr to 22mag, but the 17m2 goes hunting far more often than all others combined. You will appreciate the flat trajectory, flatter than a 22lr by 7.5 moa at 100m and the 22 mag by about 3 moa. My 22lrs & 22mag are accurate, but the 17m2 beats them in this area as well. You will enjoy this round, so I say go ahead and dive in.

Well I had my gun guy order me a Savage MARK II FV 17HM2. It was pretty much my only available option for a new rifle. I may would have gotten the A17 had it been available. I put a Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12X40 CDS on it.

I got it on paper and shot about a half box of both CCI VNT and Hornady Varmint Express. I have my work cut out for me to make this gun a shooter.

It seemed to like CCI ammo best, but my groups were quarter size at 25 yards and fist size at 100. It was chilly and windy and I was in a bit of a hurry. Maybe I can blame some of it on that and it could just need to be broke in. However, I put a Bear Creek 300 Blackout upper on my Spikes lower and it shot very well.

I wish higher quality rifle makers would make the HM2. I will spend more time with the Mark II as time allows. I have a Savage Predator Hunter 204 Ruger that is an absolute tack driver. Was hoping for the same outcome with this one.

They did New England's firearm they're out of business but they can be found easily. Anyone of mine will do this 40 to 50 yards. Easily easily coverable with a a dime 😁

Mongoose, you don't have enough posts to see the classifieds. But there is a pair of gorgeous custom shop Remingtons listed; one is a 17M2 and the other 17HMR. They ain't cheap but you'd have something that very few others have. They're listed by @Squirrelhunter22LR but you also don't have access to PMs. Get your post count up so you can see the classifieds and access PMs.

Wow, not only does she shoot, she's beautiful too. Probably out of my price range, but I definitely would have inquired about it. I'm at around $350 for the Savage and $330 for the Leupold.

Maybe the barrel needs some breaking in time, but I can't say that I've ever had a gun get more accurate with round count.

I have all sorts of 17hm2 and all shoot minute of squirrel and some ar one holers. I ounce had a FV that I cut and threaded to 16.5, bedded into a Boyd's Tacticool, fancied up 1.5lbs trigger and a decent scope. It was accurate. For yours I'd start with a cut and thread. The new muzzle will help greatly. Then get rid of the flexy stock. Even if it seems fine, it's not. This round can be sensitive to things we humans think are OK

So how many more posts do I need before I can see the swap shop? The more I look at Squirrelhunter's Remington, I think this could be a rare instance in which a sale was lost because a "new guys" post count prevented him from seeing the classifieds.

Does anyone know of a cheaper route for a Boyds stock than this?:
