This is not exactly hunting, but I took my four year old out yesterday. The leaves are just starting to turn here, and she was amazed. She told me a story about most every tree. I said very little (imagine that) just followed and listened. Great break from working on a stock for my oldest. Spotted a couple crows. As I like to say, "the critters are crawlin'." Its going to be a great year.

little kids

I know what you mean. Monday I took my 3 yr old daughter squirrel hunting. We saw the southern end of a northbound squirrel, but she loved tromping through the woods and playing with my squirrel barker and distress whisle. She also loves to go fishing with me, she plays and tosses rocks in the water and has a good time.

Ahhh, finally someone who understands 'the critters are crawlin'. I try to explain it to people at work and they just stare at me.

I usually judge by what I see hit alongside the road on my way in to work. In the middle of the summer there is nothing. As soon as we get a good solid freeze and a couple of days of cold temps I can count three of four dead *****, almost hit a coyote, swerve to avoid a deer.

It makes me want to hunt. It makes my dogs start to whine to be let out. Wax my traps. Check the zero on the slug gun. Make sure the caller is working.

Geez, I think I'm gonna go sit on the deck and listen for something to come crawling by.

Boy do i understand

I live on a mini farm, and the critters love to come by the corn crib, feeder and walnut grove. It is good to just go out and see and hear them. Lot of fun. I will go walking just to see what is out, and to listen. It is great to just be able to feel the life. Man i love the rural life.

That, and another phrase, "It was a rough nite for the critters." Every now and then you see about ten times the amount of road kill that is normal. That is a rough night for the critters. Both have been in my vocabulary so long, that I can't remember where I first heard them.

This goes for farm animals too. This time of year, the horses seem to go nuts. I have to drop my driving speed by about 10 mph. Deer are the worst, they cause dammage. Hogs are tuff too. But almost every kind of critter you can think of hits the road this time of year. A week ago, I almost hit a Great Horned Owl, that seemed content to sit on the yellow line. The only thing that has slowed down is snakes, and they have not quit yet.

Enjoy these time friends. They pass all to quickly. My oldest is about to turn 16 and it seems like just last week that she was the sweet little girl walking at her daddy's knee.
I am truly envious of you. :D
Don't wast a single second of there childhood. Enjoy it all. They wont pass this way again.

noonanda,

I don't worry too much about 'em throwing rocks in the water. My son (now 29) was throwing rocks in a small trout stream many years ago and I still caught one of my largest browns (21") on a fly.

Let 'em enjoy, they'll grow up soon enough.

Regards,
JB

I know what you all mean.

When I was young (about 10 years ago) ;) I was below our dam in the city, little pool of water about 50 yards across in any circle, and the river runs out, there was a lady fishing on one of the sides, I being young, and wanting to cross part of the river (knee deep) to get to a dry little island about the size of a car just to screw around. This lady watched me walk all the way around to her side and after I took my shoes and socks of and rolled up my pants, she tried to tell me I wasnt going in the water  Umm hmm, why not... Well the vibrations will scare the fish:confused: Right lady, there is a rushing water 50yards away and my vibrations are going to scare it away, I ended up picking up my shoes and socks and when she thought I was going to walk away, I turned to walk away and turned and ran into the water. Took two bounds and I was on the island.:p  Oh that lady cussed me. I just walked out the other side of the river and walked up town.

I just started taking my little girl {7yrs old} hunting with me last year. I don't know why she wanted to go, one night I was getting my rifle and kit together to go rabbit hunting and she asked if she could go. At first I thought she was making too much noise and that we weren't going to get anything, but then I decided that it didn't matter, to just let her have fun and spend time together. Since I came to that realization, her and I have been hunting a few times since and had fun everytime we went. My boy will be old enough to go in a few years and I think I'm going to ask him first, maybe get a few extra years in.
