Winchester 760 powder?

Does anyone have any experience with this powder? What cartridge did you use it in? Did you like it? How did it perform, etc.? I'm thinking of getting some for my .243, .308, and 30-06 and would like a little feedback.

I've used it (h414 the same) in all three and also 6.5 creedmoor. All was not bad but the 3006 was the best. I have several pounds and was really hoping it would be the ticket in one of the rifles. H4350 was better in all. I'm still testing with it hoping to find a combination.

I use it in the 7X57 Mauser with 160 grain bullets and the 375 H&H with 300 grain loads. It meters well and velocities are what they're supposed to be. No complaints with it.

Here are some cherry-picked results through my Winchester M70 (1966) Sporter (20") in .30-06 Springfield and my Shooting Chrony Beta at 3 yards from the muzzle. Cases were Remington sorted by weight.

It works best in my 7mm Mauser and 270 Winchester rifles. OK in 30.06 but there are better powders for that caliber. Nowadays you just have to try whatever you got!

Yes, Win 760/ H414 is the same powder that performs the best in my three 6.5 Carcano's. My manuals recommended magnum primers for this ball powder.
Ill have to try magnum primers. Thanks for the tip.

My "go to" powder for 22-250 and .243. Burned a LOT of that stuff. Crazy part was my best loads came right out of the Winchester loading guide. Kinda bruised my ego you know?
Okay. Got my 3# of powder today. Time to start playing.

I have not used it ,but my brother does. Worked well in his 308 and 30/06. Seems a little slow for the 250 Savage. Velocities were quite low even at max. The 18.5 inch barrel did not help. However, other Powders did not run as slow as the 760. I have helped him load and it meters great. He has always had good accuracy and consistent velocities with it.
Loaded up 51 rounds of .308 last night with the last of my H414. Just fire forming brass so I used bulk purchase 165 gr. Remington CoreLoct bullets. These bullets have proven to be surprisingly accurate in my .30 caliber rifles. Not a great long range match bullet but pretty good.

Now I just need to find time to shoot them.

Oddly, my Remington 700 shoots 185 gr. Game Kings, 175 gr. Match Kings, and 165 gr. CoreLoct bullets to the same zero point at 100 yards, and all are MOA or less. That's using 42 gr of H4895. It will be interesting to see how it prints with H414/Win 760.

I recently have started working up a load for my Hart-barreled .243 using the Sierra 70 gn. Matchking HPBT bullet and IMR 4064 powder. I do have about 1 lb. of 760 and this thread has piqued my interest in trying it out. However, I see that some recommend using magnum primers when using 760 as it can be hard to ignite. I don't have any of these, but have been using the CCI benchrest and standard large rifle primers. would these be an acceptable substitute for the magnum primers?

Gosh, I have no idea. I used CCI LR primers in the ones I just loaded up, but haven't had a chance to fire them yet. I do have a couple of bricks of CCI magnum primers, which will go in the next batch loaded with 760.

I've used 4064 a lot and never needed to use a magnum primer. It works great in my 30.06 loads for my Garand. I can't comment on .243 loads as I don't reload for that caliber.

Hector,
Over the years I have had good luck with W-760 in 22-250 using magnum primers! I have had several through the years and everyone of them has shot sub MOA! Off the top of my head I can't remember what velocity I was getting with a 55 gr. bullet, however, I don't try and squeeze every FPS out of my 22-250's as I don't believe the PD's or ground squirrels can tell the difference! Good luck!
Did a ladder test with today with 760, 175 gr Sierra Match Kings and CCI #250 LR Magnum primers. SD was kinda up and down but 4 loads out of 10 were in single digits. Lowest was 5. I think the load I will work with has an SD of 8 but it gave the smallest group and the velocity change from the previous was only 3 ft/sec.

I have my own way of analyzing group sizes. I measure the height and width of the group (CTC) and multiply to get the area. Then compute the square root of the area and look at that number. This helps compensate for any bad techniques on my part or the effects of gusty wind which plagues my club's range. Using that method 7 of the 10 loads were sub-MOA. Two were right at 1 MOA and the first one was the worst at 1.5.

So, bottom line ... Winchester 760 looks like it will work well for me, and that tricked out Remington 700 will flat shoot.

l have used Win. 760 power in my 22-250 Savage 112V and 243, in the 70s into the 80s, my 22-250 liked the W748 and H360 better. My hand box from that time with loads in yellow that worked the best.

Hector I'm using 760 lately for my 17 Remington. I use Rem 7 1/2 primers which are a magnum primer. Get very nice groups I don't run max charges. ***** and Nutria don't like this powder.
