Does anyone have a current production Winchester 1885 Low Wall in .22 or .22 Mag. I want to get one in .17 HMR and want to know what the trigger is like. Weight, crispness and overtravel.

Thanks

I got one in 22LR a couple of years ago Charlie, the trigger is heavy for my taste, I would guess around 6lbs. The gun is heavy and the trigger itself is wide making it shootable, she is very accurate with a wide variety of ammo. The gun's weight and balance make it easy to hit with offhand, I think it would make a good sillouette rifle. I have not fully evaluated it yet but so far so good.

Hi Airedale,

Thanks for the reply.
I got a reply on another forum and the guy said his was adjustable, though not by much. He said that it went from a measured 3.5 to 3.0 lbs. Have you adjusted yours? He also said it was very crisp with virtually no overtravel.

I'm glad you're happy with yours. I'll be glad when they start shipping the .17s. They sure are beautiful.

What does the low wall sell for approx.
Dealers around my parts don't stock'em. See on at a gun show every
now an then, but wasn't in the market
for one and didn't price them.

Should be nice in the 17HMR. :)

I've seen a couple of these on gunbroker in .22LR. One was priced 655.00 and another was 675.00. Of course they weren't .17 HMR's. I've been looking for one of the high grade's in .22 LR, but I want to look at one in person before I buy it--so far I haven't seen one. I saw a standard at a gun show a while back (used) but in good shape--the guy wanted 650.00. I too am curious about the accuracy of these 1885's. They are beautiful rifles.

trigger work 1885 low wall .22

Can anyone recommend someone to lighten the trigger on my .22? The gun has been very accurate at the bench for me. It would be nice to have the trigger lightened to around 2-3 lbs.

Thanks

I have a high grade low-wall (beautiful) and the trigger is adjustable...I couldn't say how much, I really haven't tried. Mine came with an acceptable pull (well...you know)...As far as accuracy I averaged 1" to 11/2" @ 50yds with iron sights...I would like to scope it and try some different ammo in it but that consarned limited edition ( there were only 900 made) tripe keeps me from doing too much with it. I do enjoy it and I am looking forward to trying one in 17...but I will get the low grade next time.

The one fault I found with the Low Wall is the sights which are dovetailed into the barrel to keep it authentic looking. When mounting a scope with a large objective the rear sight has to be knocked out leaving the bare slot for the dreaded dovetail blank. I would much rather have screw on sights even though not authentic it makes scopes and sights more easily usable and removable and a cleaner look to boot.

Hi Pd,
Here it is. Looks interesting. Thanks for the tip.

Here are directions I got from R. Dale McGee. It's a bit beyond my abilities since I don't even have a drill press. The Browne'll's one should work.

page 2

Airedale,

I filled in the dovetail on my Win 9422 with a piece of dovetail filler. I blued it with Brownell's rust bluing. I filed it to the contour of the barrel. Looks pretty good. An octagon bbl would be even easier.
I don't use a scope on it, but a Williams WGRS peep.

The new 1885s are supposed to be drilled and tapped for scope mount. Is yours? I'm planning to shoot it with a scope to see how accurate it is, then probably going to go with a tang peep for looks.

My 1885 is tapped for scope mounts...however...the front mount is actually under the rear sight, so the rear sight would have to come off no matter what scope you wanted to put on it. I have a marples tang mounted peep sight on mine and it helps but I'm getting to where my eyesight is keeping me from being proficient with iron sights anymore.
